In this paper, we focus on obtaining 2D and 3D labels, as well as track IDs for objects on the road with the help of a novel 3D Bounding Box Annotation Toolbox (3D BAT). Our open source, web-based 3D BAT incorporates several smart features to improve usability and efficiency. For instance, this annotation toolbox supports semi-automatic labeling of tracks using interpolation, which is vital for downstream tasks like tracking, motion planning and motion prediction. Moreover, annotations for all camera images are automatically obtained by projecting annotations from 3D space into the image domain. In addition to the raw image and point cloud feeds, a Masterview consisting of the top view (birds-eye-view), side view and front views is made available to observe objects of interest from different perspectives. Comparisons of our method with other publicly available annotation tools reveal that 3D annotations can be obtained faster and more efficiently by using our toolbox.

3D multi-object detection and tracking are crucial for traffic scene understanding. However, the community pays less attention to these areas due to the lack of a standardized benchmark dataset to advance the field. Moreover, existing datasets (e.g., KITTI) do not provide sufficient data and labels to tackle challenging scenes where highly interactive and occluded traffic participants are present. To address the issues, we present the Honda Research Institute 3D Dataset (H3D), a large-scale full-surround 3D multi-object detection and tracking dataset collected using a 3D LiDAR scanner. H3D comprises of 160 crowded and highly interactive traffic scenes with a total of 1 million labeled instances in 27,721 frames. With unique dataset size, rich annotations, and complex scenes, H3D is gathered to stimulate research on full-surround 3D multi-object detection and tracking. To effectively and efficiently annotate a large-scale 3D point cloud dataset, we propose a labeling methodology to speed up the overall annotation cycle. A standardized benchmark is created to evaluate full-surround 3D multi-object detection and tracking algorithms. 3D object detection and tracking algorithms are trained and tested on H3D. Finally, sources of errors are discussed for the development of future algorithms.
Recently, video scene text detection has received increasing attention due to its comprehensive applications. However, the lack of annotated scene text video datasets has become one of the most important problems, which hinders the development of video scene text detection. The existing scene text video datasets are not large-scale due to the expensive cost caused by manual labeling. In addition, the text instances in these datasets are too clear to be a challenge. To address the above issues, we propose a tracking based semi-automatic labeling strategy for scene text videos in this paper. We get semi-automatic scene text annotation by labeling manually for the first frame and tracking automatically for the subsequent frames, which avoid the huge cost of manual labeling. Moreover, a paired low-quality scene text video dataset named Text-RBL is proposed, consisting of raw videos, blurry videos, and low-resolution videos, labeled by the proposed convenient semi-automatic labeling strategy. Through an averaging operation and bicubic down-sampling operation over the raw videos, we can efficiently obtain blurry videos and low-resolution videos paired with raw videos separately. To verify the effectiveness of Text-RBL, we propose a baseline model combined with the text detector and tracker for video scene text detection. Moreover, a failure detection scheme is designed to alleviate the baseline model drift issue caused by complex scenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Text-RBL with paired low-quality videos labeled by the semi-automatic method can significantly improve the performance of the text detector in low-quality scenes.
Multi-object tracking is an important ability for an autonomous vehicle to safely navigate a traffic scene. Current state-of-the-art follows the tracking-by-detection paradigm where existing tracks are associated with detected objects through some distance metric. The key challenges to increase tracking accuracy lie in data association and track life cycle management. We propose a probabilistic, multi-modal, multi-object tracking system consisting of different trainable modules to provide robust and data-driven tracking results. First, we learn how to fuse features from 2D images and 3D LiDAR point clouds to capture the appearance and geometric information of an object. Second, we propose to learn a metric that combines the Mahalanobis and feature distances when comparing a track and a new detection in data association. And third, we propose to learn when to initialize a track from an unmatched object detection. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative results, we show that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art on the NuScenes Tracking dataset.
Eye movements provide insight into what parts of an image a viewer finds most salient, interesting, or relevant to the task at hand. Unfortunately, eye tracking data, a commonly-used proxy for attention, is cumbersome to collect. Here we explore an alternative: a comprehensive web-based toolbox for crowdsourcing visual attention. We draw from four main classes of attention-capturing methodologies in the literature. ZoomMaps is a novel zoom-based interface that captures viewing on a mobile phone. CodeCharts is a self-reporting methodology that records points of interest at precise viewing durations. ImportAnnots is an annotation tool for selecting important image regions, and cursor-based BubbleView lets viewers click to deblur a small area. We compare these methodologies using a common analysis framework in order to develop appropriate use cases for each interface. This toolbox and our analyses provide a blueprint for how to gather attention data at scale without an eye tracker.
In this manuscript, we introduce a semi-automatic scene graph annotation tool for images, the GeneAnnotator. This software allows human annotators to describe the existing relationships between participators in the visual scene in the form of directed graphs, hence enabling the learning and reasoning on visual relationships, e.g., image captioning, VQA and scene graph generation, etc. The annotations for certain image datasets could either be merged in a single VG150 data-format file to support most existing models for scene graph learning or transformed into a separated annotation file for each single image to build customized datasets. Moreover, GeneAnnotator provides a rule-based relationship recommending algorithm to reduce the heavy annotation workload. With GeneAnnotator, we propose Traffic Genome, a comprehensive scene graph dataset with 1000 diverse traffic images, which in return validates the effectiveness of the proposed software for scene graph annotation.
