We study the permanence and impermanence for discrete-time Kolmogorov systems admitting a carrying simplex. Sufficient conditions to guarantee permanence and impermanence are provided based on the existence of a carrying simplex. Particularly, for low-dimensional systems, permanence and impermanence can be determined by boundary fixed points. For a class of competitive systems whose fixed points are determined by linear equations, there always exists a carrying simplex. We provide a universal classification via the equivalence relation relative to local dynamics of boundary fixed points for the three-dimensional systems by the index formula on the carrying simplex. There are a total of 33 stable equivalence classes which are described in terms of inequalities on parameters, and we present the phase portraits on their carrying simplices. Moreover, every orbit converges to some fixed point in classes 1-25 and 33; there is always a heteroclinic cycle in class 27; Neimark-Sacker bifurcations may occur in classes 26-31 but cannot occur in class 32. Based on our permanence criteria and the equivalence classification, we obtain the specific conditions on parameters for permanence and impermanence. Only systems in classes 29,31,33 and those in class 27 with a repelling heteroclinic cycle are permanent. Applications to discrete population models including the Leslie-Gower models, Atkinson-Allen models and Ricker models are given.

Certain dynamical models of competition have a unique invariant hypersurface to whichevery nonzero tractory is asymptotic, having simple geometry and topology.
Persistence and permanence are properties of dynamical systems that describe the long-term behavior of the solutions, and in particular specify whether positive solutions approach the boundary of the positive orthant. Mass-action systems (or more generally power-law systems) are very common in chemistry, biology, and engineering, and are often used to describe the dynamics in interaction networks. We prove that two-species mass-action systems derived from weakly reversible networks are both persistent and permanent, for any values of the reaction rate parameters. Moreover, we prove that a larger class of networks, called endotactic networks, also give rise to permanent systems, even if we allow the reaction rate parameters to vary in time. These results also apply to power-law systems and other nonlinear dynamical systems. In addition, ideas behind these results allow us to prove the Global Attractor Conjecture for three-species systems.
A persistent dynamical system in $mathbb{R}^d_{> 0}$ is one whose solutions have positive lower bounds for large $t$, while a permanent dynamical system in $mathbb{R}^d_{> 0}$ is one whose solutions have uniform upper and lower bounds for large $t$. These properties have important applications for the study of mathematical models in biochemistry, cell biology, and ecology. Inspired by reaction network theory, we define a class of polynomial dynamical systems called tropically endotactic. We show that two-dimensional tropically endotactic polynomial dynamical systems are permanent, irrespective of the values of (possibly time-dependent) parameters in these systems. These results generalize the permanence of two-dimensional reversible, weakly reversible, and endotactic mass action systems.
We study two coupled discrete-time equations with different (asynchronous) periodic time scales. The coupling is of the type sample and hold, i.e., the state of each equation is sampled at its update times and held until it is read as an input at the next update time for the other equation. We construct an interpolating two-dimensional complex-valued system on the union of the two time scales and an extrapolating four-dimensional system on the intersection of the two time scales. We discuss stability by several results, examples and counterexamples in various frameworks to show that the asynchronicity can have a significant impact on the dynamical properties.
We propose a novel supervised multi-class/single-label classifier that maps training data onto a linearly separable latent space with a simplex-like geometry. This approach allows us to transform the classification problem into a well-defined regression problem. For its solution we can choose suitable distance metrics in feature space and regression models predicting latent space coordinates. A benchmark on various artificial and real-world data sets is used to demonstrate the calibration qualities and prediction performance of our classifier.
