Recently, the attention mechanism has been successfully applied in convolutional neural networks (CNNs), significantly boosting the performance of many computer vision tasks. Unfortunately, few medical image recognition approaches incorporate the attention mechanism in the CNNs. In particular, there exists high redundancy in fundus images for glaucoma detection, such that the attention mechanism has potential in improving the performance of CNN-based glaucoma detection. This paper proposes an attention-based CNN for glaucoma detection (AG-CNN). Specifically, we first establish a large-scale attention based glaucoma (LAG) database, which includes 5,824 fundus images labeled with either positive glaucoma (2,392) or negative glaucoma (3,432). The attention maps of the ophthalmologists are also collected in LAG database through a simulated eye-tracking experiment. Then, a new structure of AG-CNN is designed, including an attention prediction subnet, a pathological area localization subnet and a glaucoma classification subnet. Different from other attention-based CNN methods, the features are also visualized as the localized pathological area, which can advance the performance of glaucoma detection. Finally, the experiment results show that the proposed AG-CNN approach significantly advances state-of-the-art glaucoma detection.

Recently, the convolutional neural network has brought impressive improvements for object detection. However, detecting tiny objects in large-scale remote sensing images still remains challenging. First, the extreme large input size makes the existing object detection solutions too slow for practical use. Second, the massive and complex backgrounds cause serious false alarms. Moreover, the ultratiny objects increase the difficulty of accurate detection. To tackle these problems, we propose a unified and self-reinforced network called remote sensing region-based convolutional neural network ($mathcal{R}^2$-CNN), composing of backbone Tiny-Net, intermediate global attention block, and final classifier and detector. Tiny-Net is a lightweight residual structure, which enables fast and powerful features extraction from inputs. Global attention block is built upon Tiny-Net to inhibit false positives. Classifier is then used to predict the existence of targets in each patch, and detector is followed to locate them accurately if available. The classifier and detector are mutually reinforced with end-to-end training, which further speed up the process and avoid false alarms. Effectiveness of $mathcal{R}^2$-CNN is validated on hundreds of GF-1 images and GF-2 images that are 18 000 $times$ 18 192 pixels, 2.0-m resolution, and 27 620 $times$ 29 200 pixels, 0.8-m resolution, respectively. Specifically, we can process a GF-1 image in 29.4 s on Titian X just with single thread. According to our knowledge, no previous solution can detect the tiny object on such huge remote sensing images gracefully. We believe that it is a significant step toward practical real-time remote sensing systems.
This paper introduces a Deep Learning Convolutional Neural Network model based on Faster-RCNN for motorcycle detection and classification on urban environments. The model is evaluated in occluded scenarios where more than 60% of the vehicles present a degree of occlusion. For training and evaluation, we introduce a new dataset of 7500 annotated images, captured under real traffic scenes, using a drone mounted camera. Several tests were carried out to design the network, achieving promising results of 75% in average precision (AP), even with the high number of occluded motorbikes, the low angle of capture and the moving camera. The model is also evaluated on low occlusions datasets, reaching results of up to 92% in AP.
Face recognition is a popular and well-studied area with wide applications in our society. However, racial bias had been proven to be inherent in most State Of The Art (SOTA) face recognition systems. Many investigative studies on face recognition algorithms have reported higher false positive rates of African subjects cohorts than the other cohorts. Lack of large-scale African face image databases in public domain is one of the main restrictions in studying the racial bias problem of face recognition. To this end, we collect a face image database namely CASIA-Face-Africa which contains 38,546 images of 1,183 African subjects. Multi-spectral cameras are utilized to capture the face images under various illumination settings. Demographic attributes and facial expressions of the subjects are also carefully recorded. For landmark detection, each face image in the database is manually labeled with 68 facial keypoints. A group of evaluation protocols are constructed according to different applications, tasks, partitions and scenarios. The performances of SOTA face recognition algorithms without re-training are reported as baselines. The proposed database along with its face landmark annotations, evaluation protocols and preliminary results form a good benchmark to study the essential aspects of face biometrics for African subjects, especially face image preprocessing, face feature analysis and matching, facial expression recognition, sex/age estimation, ethnic classification, face image generation, etc. The database can be downloaded from our http://www.cripacsir.cn/dataset/

Recently, the anchor-free object detection model has shown great potential for accuracy and speed to exceed anchor-based object detection. Therefore, two issues are mainly studied in this article: (1) How to let the backbone network in the anchor-free object detection model learn feature extraction? (2) How to make better use of the feature pyramid network? In order to solve the above problems, Experiments show that our model has a certain improvement in accuracy compared with the current popular detection models on the COCO dataset, the designed attention mechanism module can capture contextual information well, improve detection accuracy, and use sepc network to help balance abstract and detailed information, and reduce the problem of semantic gap in the feature pyramid network. Whether it is anchor-based network model YOLOv3, Faster RCNN, or anchor-free network model Foveabox, FSAF, FCOS. Our optimal model can get 39.5% COCO AP under the background of ResNet50.
In this paper, we introduce a challenging global large-scale ship database (called GLSD), designed specifically for ship detection tasks. The designed GLSD database includes a total of 140,616 annotated instances from 100,729 images. Based on the collected images, we propose 13 categories that widely exists in international routes. These categories include sailing boat, fishing boat, passenger ship, war ship, general cargo ship, container ship, bulk cargo carrier, barge, ore carrier, speed boat, canoe, oil carrier, and tug. The motivations of developing GLSD include the following: 1) providing a refined ship detection database; 2) providing the worldwide researchers of ship detection and exhaustive label information (bounding box and ship class label) in one uniform global database; and 3) providing a large-scale ship database with geographic information (port and country information) that benefits multi-modal analysis. In addition, we discuss the evaluation protocols given image characteristics in GLSD and analyze the performance of selected state-of-the-art object detection algorithms on GSLD, providing baselines for future studies. More information regarding the designed GLSD can be found at https://github.com/jiaming-wang/GLSD.
