Optimal power flow (OPF) is an important technique for power systems to achieve optimal operation while satisfying multiple constraints. The traditional OPF are mostly centralized methods which are executed in the centralized control center. This paper introduces a totally Distributed DC Optimal Power Flow (DDCOPF) method for future power systems which have more and more distributed generators. The proposed method is based on the Distributed Economic Dispatch (DED) method and the Distributed State Estimation (DSE) method. In this proposed scheme, the DED method is used to achieve the optimal power dispatch with the lowest cost, and the DSE method provides power flow information of the power system to the proposed DDCOPF algorithm. In the proposed method, the Auto-Regressive (AR) model is used to predict the load variation so that the proposed algorithm can prevent overflow. In addition, a method called constraint algorithm is developed to correct the results of DED with the proposed correction algorithm and penalty term so that the constraints for the power system will not be violated. Different from existing research, the proposed method is completely distributed without need for any centralized facility.
The trend in the electric power system is to move towards increased amounts of distributed resources which suggests a transition from the current highly centralized to a more distributed control structure. In this paper, we propose a method which enables a fully distributed solution of the DC Optimal Power Flow problem (DC-OPF), i.e. the generation settings which minimize cost while supplying the load and ensuring that all line flows are below their limits are determined in a distributed fashion. The approach consists of a distributed procedure that aims at solving the first order optimality conditions in which individual bus optimization variables are iteratively updated through simple local computations and information is exchanged with neighboring entities. In particular, the update for a specific bus consists of a term which takes into account the coupling between the neighboring Lagrange multiplier variables and a local innovation term that enforces the demand/supply balance. The buses exchange information on the current update of their multipliers and the bus angle with their neighboring buses. An analytical proof is given that the proposed method converges to the optimal solution of the DC-OPF. Also, the performance is evaluated using the IEEE Reliability Test System as a test case.
In this paper, we consider the problem of optimally coordinating the response of a group of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems by solving the so-called optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The OPF problem is concerned with determining an optimal operating point, at which some cost function, e.g., generation cost or power losses, is minimized, and operational constraints are satisfied. To solve the OPF problem, we propose distributed algorithms that are able to operate over time-varying communication networks and have geometric convergence rate. We solve the second-order cone program (SOCP) relaxation of the OPF problem for radial distribution systems, which is formulated using the so-called DistFlow model. Theoretical results are further supported by the numerical simulations.
This paper proposes a fully distributed robust state-estimation (D-RBSE) method that is applicable to multi-area power systems with nonlinear measurements. We extend the recently introduced bilinear formulation of state estimation problems to a robust model. A distributed bilinear state-estimation procedure is developed. In both linear stages, the state estimation problem in each area is solved locally, with minimal data exchange with its neighbors. The intermediate nonlinear transformation can be performed by all areas in parallel without any need of inter-regional communication. This algorithm does not require a central coordinator and can compress bad measurements by introducing a robust state estimation model. Numerical tests on IEEE 14-bus and 118-bus benchmark systems demonstrate the validity of the method.
In this work, a dynamic system is controlled by multiple sensor-actuator agents, each of them commanding and observing parts of the systems input and output. The different agents sporadically exchange data with each other via a common bus network according to local event-triggering protocols. From these data, each agent estimates the complete dynamic state of the system and uses its estimate for feedback control. We propose a synthesis procedure for designing the agents state estimators and the event triggering thresholds. The resulting distributed and event-based control system is guaranteed to be stable and to satisfy a predefined estimation performance criterion. The approach is applied to the control of a vehicle platoon, where the methods trade-off between performance and communication, and the scalability in the number of agents is demonstrated.
We construct team-optimal estimation algorithms over distributed networks for state estimation in the finite-horizon mean-square error (MSE) sense. Here, we have a distributed collection of agents with processing and cooperation capabilities. These agents observe noisy samples of a desired state through a linear model and seek to learn this state by interacting with each other. Although this problem has attracted significant attention and been studied extensively in fields including machine learning and signal processing, all the well-known strategies do not achieve team-optimal learning performance in the finite-horizon MSE sense. To this end, we formulate the finite-horizon distributed minimum MSE (MMSE) when there is no restriction on the size of the disclosed information, i.e., oracle performance, over an arbitrary network topology. Subsequently, we show that exchange of local estimates is sufficient to achieve the oracle performance only over certain network topologies. By inspecting these network structures, we propose recursive algorithms achieving the oracle performance through the disclosure of local estimates. For practical implementations we also provide approaches to reduce the complexity of the algorithms through the time-windowing of the observations. Finally, in the numerical examples, we demonstrate the superior performance of the introduced algorithms in the finite-horizon MSE sense due to optimal estimation.
