In this paper we investigate fusion rules for distributed detection in large random clustered-wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with a three-tier hierarchy; the sensor nodes (SNs), the cluster heads (CHs) and the fusion center (FC). The CHs collect the SNs local decisions and relay them to the FC that then fuses them to reach the ultimate decision. The SN-CH and the CH-FC channels suffer from additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). In this context, we derive the optimal log-likelihood ratio (LLR) fusion rule, which turns out to be intractable. So, we develop a sub-optimal linear fusion rule (LFR) that weighs the clusters data according to both its local detection performance and the quality of the communication channels. In order to implement it, we propose an approximate maximum likelihood based LFR (LFR-aML), which estimates the required parameters for the LFR. We also derive Gaussian-tail upper bounds for the detection and false alarms probabilities for the LFR. Furthermore, an optimal CH transmission power allocation strategy is developed by solving the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions for the related optimization problem. Extensive simulations show that the LFR attains a detection performance near to that of the optimal LLR and confirms the validity of the proposed upper bounds. Moreover, when compared to equal power allocation, simulations show that our proposed power allocation strategy achieves a significant power saving at the expense of a small reduction in the detection performance.
A distributed spiral algorithm for distributed optimization in WSN is proposed. By forming a spiral-shape message passing scheme among clusters, without loss of estimation accuracy and convergence speed, the algorithm is proved to converge with a lower total transport cost than the distributed in-cluster algorithm.
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) acts as the backbone of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. In WSN, field sensing and fusion are the most commonly seen problems, which involve collecting and processing of a huge volume of spatial samples in an unknown field to reconstruct the field or extract its features. One of the major concerns is how to reduce the communication overhead and data redundancy with prescribed fusion accuracy. In this paper, an integrated communication and computation framework based on meta-learning is proposed to enable adaptive field sensing and reconstruction. It consists of a stochastic-gradient-descent (SGD) based base-learner used for the field model prediction aiming to minimize the average prediction error, and a reinforcement meta-learner aiming to optimize the sensing decision by simultaneously rewarding the error reduction with samples obtained so far and penalizing the corresponding communication cost. An adaptive sensing algorithm based on the above two-layer meta-learning framework is presented. It actively determines the next most informative sensing location, and thus considerably reduces the spatial samples and yields superior performance and robustness compared with conventional schemes. The convergence behavior of the proposed algorithm is also comprehensively analyzed and simulated. The results reveal that the proposed field sensing algorithm significantly improves the convergence rate.
The most common approach to mitigate the impact that the presence of malicious nodes has on the accuracy of decision fusion schemes consists in observing the behavior of the nodes over a time interval T and then removing the reports of suspect nodes from the fusion process. By assuming that some a-priori information about the presence of malicious nodes and their behavior is available, we show that the information stemming from the suspect nodes can be exploited to further improve the decision fusion accuracy. Specifically, we derive the optimum fusion rule and analyze the achievable performance for two specific cases. In the first case, the states of the nodes (corrupted or honest) are independent of each other and the fusion center knows only the probability that a node is malicious. In the second case, the exact number of corrupted nodes is fixed and known to the fusion center. We also investigate the optimum corruption strategy for the malicious nodes, showing that always reverting the local decision does not necessarily maximize the loss of performance at the fusion center.
Wireless sensor-actuator networks offer flexibility for control design. One novel element which may arise in networks with multiple nodes is that the role of some nodes does not need to be fixed. In particular, there is no need to pre-allocate which nodes assume controller functions and which ones merely relay data. We present a flexible architecture for networked control using multiple nodes connected in series over analog erasure channels without acknowledgments. The control architecture proposed adapts to changes in network conditions, by allowing the role played by individual nodes to depend upon transmission outcomes. We adopt stochastic models for transmission outcomes and characterize the distribution of controller location and the covariance of system states. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed architecture has the potential to give better performance than limiting control calculations to be carried out at a fixed node.
Stochastic stability for centralized time-varying Kalman filtering over a wireles ssensor network with correlated fading channels is studied. On their route to the gateway, sensor packets, possibly aggregated with measurements from several nodes, may be dropped because of fading links. To study this situation, we introduce a network state process, which describes a finite set of configurations of the radio environment. The network state characterizes the channel gain distributions of the links, which are allowed to be correlated between each other. Temporal correlations of channel gains are modeled by allowing the network state process to form a (semi-)Markov chain. We establish sufficient conditions that ensure the Kalman filter to be exponentially bounded. In the one-sensor case, this new stability condition is shown to include previous results obtained in the literature as special cases. The results also hold when using power and bit-rate control policies, where the transmission power and bit-rate of each node are nonlinear mapping of the network state and channel gains.
