Fe$^{3+}$ $S = 5/2$ ions form saw-tooth like chains along the $a$ axis of the oxo-selenite Fe$_2$O(SeO$_3$)$_2$ and an onset of long-range magnetic order is observed for temperatures below $T_C = 105$ K. This order leads to distinct fingerprints in phonon mode linewidths and energies as resolved by Raman scattering. In addition, new excitations with small linewidths emerge below $T = 150$ K, and are assigned to two-magnon scattering processes with the participation of flat-band and high energy magnon branches. From this a set of exchange coupling constants is estimated. The specific ratio of the saw-tooth spine-spine and spine-vertex interactions may explain the instability of the dimer quantum ground state against an incommensurate 3D magnetic order.

We investigate the temperature dependence of the spin dynamics in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ by neutron scattering experiments. At low temperature, this material undergoes a transition towards an all in - all out antiferromagnetic phase and the spin dynamics encompass a dispersion-less mode, characterized by a dynamical spin ice structure factor. Unexpectedly, this mode is found to survive above $T_{rm N} approx 300$ mK. Concomitantly, elastic correlations of the spin ice type develop. These are the signatures of a peculiar correlated paramagnetic phase which can be considered as a new example of Coulomb phase. Our observations near $T_{rm N}$ do not reproduce the signatures expected for a Higgs transition, but show reminiscent features of the all in - all out order superimposed on a Coulomb phase.
We report the signatures of dynamic spin fluctuations in the layered honeycomb Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ compound, with a 3$d$ S = 1/2 $d^9$ Cu$^{2+}$ configuration, through muon spin rotation and relaxation ($mu$SR) and neutron scattering studies. Our zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF)-$mu$SR results demonstrate the slowing down of the Cu$^{2+}$ spin fluctuations below 4.0 K. The saturation of the ZF relaxation rate at low temperature, together with its weak dependence on the longitudinal field between 0 and 3.2 kG, indicates the presence of dynamic spin fluctuations persisting even at 80 mK without static order. Neutron scattering study reveals the gaped magnetic excitations with three modes at 7.7, 13.5 and 33 meV. Our DFT calculations reveal that the next nearest neighbors (NNN) AFM exchange ($J_{AFM}$ = 31 meV) is stronger than the NN FM exchange ($J_{FM}$ = -21 meV) indicating the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the physics of Li$_3$Cu$_2$SbO$_6$ can be explained by an alternating AFM chain rather than the honeycomb lattice.
We investigate the low temperature magnetic properties of a $S=frac{5}{2}$ Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnet, the layered monodiphosphate Li$_9$Fe$_3$(P$_2$O$_7$)$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$, using magnetization measurements and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance. An antiferromagnetic-type order sets in at $T_{rm N}=1.3$ K and a characteristic magnetization plateau is observed at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization below $T^* sim 5$ K. A moderate $^{31}$P NMR line broadening reveals the development of anisotropic short-range correlations within the plateau phase concomitantly with a gapless spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1 sim k_B T / hbar S$, which both point to the presence of a semiclassical nematic spin liquid state predicted for the Heisenberg kagome antiferromagnetic model.
La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ can be explained in terms of Mott localization in sharp contrast with the metallic behavior of FeSe and other parent parent compounds of iron superconductors. We demonstrate that the key ingredient that makes La$_2$O$_3$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ a Mott insulator, rather than a correlated metal dominated by the Hunds coupling is the enhanced crystal-field splitting, accompanied by a smaller orbital-resolved kinetic energy. The strong deviation from orbital degeneracy introduced by the crystal-field splitting also pushes this materials close to an orbital-selective Mott transition. We predict that either doping or uniaxial external pressure can drive the material into an orbital-selective Mott state, where only one or few orbitals are metallized while the others remain insulating.
The topochemical transformation of single crystals of Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ into Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$F$_2$ is reported via fluorine insertion. Characterization of the newly formed Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$F$_2$ phase shows a nearly complete oxidation of Ir$^{4+}$ cations into Ir$^{5+}$ that in turn drives the system from an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator with a half-filled J$_{eff}=1/2$ band into a nonmagnetic $J=0$ band insulator. First principles calculations reveal a remarkably flat insertion energy that locally drives the fluorination process to completion. Band structure calculations support the formation of a band insulator whose charge gap relies on the strong spin-orbit coupling inherent to the Ir metal ions of this compound.
