We consider an echo-assisted communication model wherein block-coded messages, when transmitted across several frames, reach the destination as multiple noisy copies. We address adversarial attacks on such models wherein a subset of the noisy copies are vulnerable to manipulation by an adversary. Particularly, we study a non-persistent attack model with the adversary attacking 50% of the frames on the vulnerable copies in an i.i.d. fashion. We show that this adversarial model drives the destination to detect the attack locally within every frame, thereby resulting in degraded performance due to false-positives and miss-detection. Our main objective is to characterize the mutual information of this adversarial echo-assisted channel by incorporating the performance of attack-detection strategies. With the use of an imperfect detector, we show that the compound channel comprising the adversarial echo-assisted channel and the attack detector exhibits memory-property, and as a result, obtaining closed-form expressions on mutual information is intractable. To circumvent this problem, we present a new framework to approximate the mutual information by deriving sufficient conditions on the channel parameters and also the performance of the attack detectors. Finally, we propose two attack-detectors, which are inspired by traditional as well as neural-network ideas, and show that the mutual information offered by these detectors is close to that of the Genie detector for short frame-lengths.
Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology to enhance wireless communication in terms of energy cost and system performance by equipping a considerable quantity of nearly passive reflecting elements. This study focuses on a downlink RIS-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system that comprises three communication links of Rician channel, including base station (BS) to RIS, RIS to user, and BS to user. The objective is to design an optimal transmit covariance matrix at BS and diagonal phase-shifting matrix at RIS to maximize the achievable ergodic rate by exploiting the statistical channel state information at BS. Therefore, a large-system approximation of the achievable ergodic rate is derived using the replica method in large dimension random matrix theory. This large-system approximation enables the identification of asymptotic-optimal transmit covariance and diagonal phase-shifting matrices using an alternating optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the large-system results are consistent with the achievable ergodic rate calculated by Monte Carlo averaging. The results verify that the proposed algorithm can significantly enhance the RIS-assisted MIMO system performance.
We study the Han-Kobayashi (HK) achievable sum rate for the two-user symmetric Gaussian interference channel. We find the optimal power split ratio between the common and private messages (assuming no time-sharing), and derive a closed form expression for the corresponding sum rate. This provides a finer understanding of the achievable HK sum rate, and allows for precise comparisons between this sum rate and that of orthogonal signaling. One surprising finding is that despite the fact that the channel is symmetric, allowing for asymmetric power split ratio at both users (i.e., asymmetric rates) can improve the sum rate significantly. Considering the high SNR regime, we specify the interference channel value above which the sum rate achieved using asymmetric power splitting outperforms the symmetric case.
Millimeter wave (mmWave) systems will likely employ large antenna arrays at both the transmitters and receivers. A natural application of antenna arrays is simultaneous transmission to multiple users, which requires multi-user precoding at the transmitter. Hardware constraints, however, make it difficult to apply conventional lower frequency MIMO precoding techniques at mmWave. This paper proposes and analyzes a low complexity hybrid analog/digital beamforming algorithm for downlink multi-user mmWave systems. Hybrid precoding involves a combination of analog and digital processing that is motivated by the requirement to reduce the power consumption of the complete radio frequency and mixed signal hardware. The proposed algorithm configures hybrid precoders at the transmitter and analog combiners at multiple receivers with a small training and feedback overhead. For this algorithm, we derive a lower bound on the achievable rate for the case of single-path channels, show its asymptotic optimality at large numbers of antennas, and make useful insights for more general cases. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm offers higher sum rates compared with analog-only beamforming, and approaches the performance of the unconstrained digital precoding solutions.
This paper studies the capacity of molecular communications in fluid media, where the information is encoded in the number of transmitted molecules in a time-slot (amplitude shift keying). The propagation of molecules is governed by random Brownian motion and the communication is in general subject to inter-symbol interference (ISI). We first consider the case where ISI is negligible and analyze the capacity and the capacity per unit cost of the resulting discrete memoryless molecular channel and the effect of possible practical constraints, such as limitations on peak and/or average number of transmitted molecules per transmission. In the case with a constrained peak molecular emission, we show that as the time-slot duration increases, the input distribution achieving the capacity per channel use transitions from binary inputs to a discrete uniform distribution. In this paper, we also analyze the impact of ISI. Crucially, we account for the correlation that ISI induces between channel output symbols. We derive an upper bound and two lower bounds on the capacity in this setting. Using the input distribution obtained by an extended Blahut-Arimoto algorithm, we maximize the lower bounds. Our results show that, over a wide range of parameter values, the bounds are close.
Achievable information rates (AIRs) of wideband optical communication systems using ~40 nm (~5 THz) EDFA and ~100 nm (~12.5 THz) distributed Raman amplification are estimated based on a first-order perturbation analysis. The AIRs of each individual channel have been evaluated for DP-64QAM, DP-256QAM, and DP-1024QAM modulation formats. The impact of full-field nonlinear compensation (FF-NLC) and probabilistically shaped constellations using a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution were studied and compared to electronic dispersion compensation. It is found that a probabilistically shaped DP-1024QAM constellation combined with FF-NLC yields AIRs of ~75 Tbit/s for the EDFA scheme and ~223 Tbit/s for the Raman amplification scheme over 2000 km standard single mode fibre transmission.
