Object detection in aerial images is an active yet challenging task in computer vision because of the birdview perspective, the highly complex backgrounds, and the variant appearances of objects. Especially when detecting densely packed objects in aerial images, methods relying on horizontal proposals for common object detection often introduce mismatches between the Region of Interests (RoIs) and objects. This leads to the common misalignment between the final object classification confidence and localization accuracy. Although rotated anchors have been used to tackle this problem, the design of them always multiplies the number of anchors and dramatically increases the computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a RoI Transformer to address these problems. More precisely, to improve the quality of region proposals, we first designed a Rotated RoI (RRoI) learner to transform a Horizontal Region of Interest (HRoI) into a Rotated Region of Interest (RRoI). Based on the RRoIs, we then proposed a Rotated Position Sensitive RoI Align (RPS-RoI-Align) module to extract rotation-invariant features from them for boosting subsequent classification and regression. Our RoI Transformer is with light weight and can be easily embedded into detectors for oriented object detection. A simple implementation of the RoI Transformer has achieved state-of-the-art performances on two common and challenging aerial datasets, i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016, with a neglectable reduction to detection speed. Our RoI Transformer exceeds the deformable Position Sensitive RoI pooling when oriented bounding-box annotations are available. Extensive experiments have also validated the flexibility and effectiveness of our RoI Transformer. The results demonstrate that it can be easily integrated with other detector architectures and significantly improve the performances.

We propose a novel method for representing oriented objects in aerial images named Adaptive Period Embedding (APE). While traditional object detection methods represent object with horizontal bounding boxes, the objects in aerial images are oritented. Calculating the angle of object is an yet challenging task. While almost all previous object detectors for aerial images directly regress the angle of objects, they use complex rules to calculate the angle, and their performance is limited by the rule design. In contrast, our method is based on the angular periodicity of oriented objects. The angle is represented by two two-dimensional periodic vectors whose periods are different, the vector is continuous as shape changes. The label generation rule is more simple and reasonable compared with previous methods. The proposed method is general and can be applied to other oriented detector. Besides, we propose a novel IoU calculation method for long objects named length independent IoU (LIIoU). We intercept part of the long side of the target box to get the maximum IoU between the proposed box and the intercepted target box. Thereby, some long boxes will have corresponding positive samples. Our method reaches the 1st place of DOAI2019 competition task1 (oriented object) held in workshop on Detecting Objects in Aerial Images in conjunction with IEEE CVPR 2019.
Recently, the study on object detection in aerial images has made tremendous progress in the community of computer vision. However, most state-of-the-art methods tend to develop elaborate attention mechanisms for the space-time feature calibrations with high computational complexity, while surprisingly ignoring the importance of feature calibrations in channels. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective Calibrated-Guidance (CG) scheme to enhance channel communications in a feature transformer fashion, which can adaptively determine the calibration weights for each channel based on the global feature affinity-pairs. Specifically, given a set of feature maps, CG first computes the feature similarity between each channel and the remaining channels as the intermediary calibration guidance. Then, re-representing each channel by aggregating all the channels weighted together via the guidance. Our CG can be plugged into any deep neural network, which is named as CG-Net. To demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency, extensive experiments are carried out on both oriented and horizontal object detection tasks of aerial images. Results on two challenging benchmarks (i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016) demonstrate that our CG-Net can achieve state-of-the-art performance in accuracy with a fair computational overhead. https://github.com/WeiZongqi/CG-Net
Face parsing aims to predict pixel-wise labels for facial components of a target face in an image. Existing approaches usually crop the target face from the input image with respect to a bounding box calculated during pre-processing, and thus can only parse inner facial Regions of Interest~(RoIs). Peripheral regions like hair are ignored and nearby faces that are partially included in the bounding box can cause distractions. Moreover, these methods are only trained and evaluated on near-frontal portrait images and thus their performance for in-the-wild cases has been unexplored. To address these issues, this paper makes three contributions. First, we introduce iBugMask dataset for face parsing in the wild, which consists of 21,866 training images and 1,000 testing images. The training images are obtained by augmenting an existing dataset with large face poses. The testing images are manually annotated with $11$ facial regions and there are large variations in sizes, poses, expressions and background. Second, we propose RoI Tanh-polar transform that warps the whole image to a Tanh-polar representation with a fixed ratio between the face area and the context, guided by the target bounding box. The new representation contains all information in the original image, and allows for rotation equivariance in the convolutional neural networks~(CNNs). Third, we propose a hybrid residual representation learning block, coined HybridBlock, that contains convolutional layers in both the Tanh-polar space and the Tanh-Cartesian space, allowing for receptive fields of different shapes in CNNs. Through extensive experiments, we show that the proposed method improves the state-of-the-art for face parsing in the wild and does not require facial landmarks for alignment.

In contrast to the oriented bounding boxes, point set representation has great potential to capture the detailed structure of instances with the arbitrary orientations, large aspect ratios and dense distribution in aerial images. However, the conventional point set-based approaches are handcrafted with the fixed locations using points-to-points supervision, which hurts their flexibility on the fine-grained feature extraction. To address these limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel approach to aerial object detection, named Oriented RepPoints. Specifically, we suggest to employ a set of adaptive points to capture the geometric and spatial information of the arbitrary-oriented objects, which is able to automatically arrange themselves over the object in a spatial and semantic scenario. To facilitate the supervised learning, the oriented conversion function is proposed to explicitly map the adaptive point set into an oriented bounding box. Moreover, we introduce an effective quality assessment measure to select the point set samples for training, which can choose the representative items with respect to their potentials on orientated object detection. Furthermore, we suggest a spatial constraint to penalize the outlier points outside the ground-truth bounding box. In addition to the traditional evaluation metric mAP focusing on overlap ratio, we propose a new metric mAOE to measure the orientation accuracy that is usually neglected in the previous studies on oriented object detection. Experiments on three widely used datasets including DOTA, HRSC2016 and UCAS-AOD demonstrate that our proposed approach is effective.

SSD (Single Shot Multibox Detector) is one of the most successful object detectors for its high accuracy and fast speed. However, the features from shallow layer (mainly Conv4_3) of SSD lack semantic information, resulting in poor performance in small objects. In this paper, we proposed DDSSD (Dilation and Deconvolution Single Shot Multibox Detector), an enhanced SSD with a novel feature fusion module which can improve the performance over SSD for small object detection. In the feature fusion module, dilation convolution module is utilized to enlarge the receptive field of features from shallow layer and deconvolution module is adopted to increase the size of feature maps from high layer. Our network achieves 79.7% mAP on PASCAL VOC2007 test and 28.3% mmAP on MS COCO test-dev at 41 FPS with only 300x300 input using a single Nvidia 1080 GPU. Especially, for small objects, DDSSD achieves 10.5% on MS COCO and 22.8% on FLIR thermal dataset, outperforming a lot of state-of-the-art object detection algorithms in both aspects of accuracy and speed.
