We investigate the electronic structure of the highly anisotropic $beta$ phase of metallic plutonium, within the combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Its crystal structure gives rise to site and orbital selective electronic correlations, with coherent Pu-5$f_{5/2}$ states and very incoherent Pu-5$f_{7/2}$ states. The Hunds coupling is essential for determining the level of correlations of electrons in Pu-5$f$ states, and for the quasiparticle multiplets features in the Pu-5$f$ spectral function.

$Fe_3O_4$ is a mixed-valence strongly correlated transition metal oxide which displays the intriguing metal to insulator Verwey transition. Here we investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of $Fe_3O_4$ by a unique combination of high-resolution Fe 2p3d resonant inelastic scattering magnetic circular (RIXS-MCD) and magnetic linear (RIXS-MLD) dichroism. We show that by coupling the site selectivity of RIXS with the magnetic selectivity imposed by the incident polarization handedness, we can unambiguously identify spin-flip excitations and quantify the exchange interaction of the different sublattices. Furthermore, our RIXS-MLD measurements show spin-orbital excitations that exhibit strong polarization and magnetic field dependence. Guided by theoretical simulations, we reveal that the angular dependence arises from a strong interplay between trigonal crystal-field, magnetic exchange and spin-orbit interaction at the nominal $Fe^{2+}$ sites. Our results highlight the capabilities of RIXS magnetic dichroism studies to investigate the ground state of complex systems where in-equivalent sites and bonds are simultaneously present.
We analyze the role of orbital degeneracy in possible magnetic and orbital instabilities by solving exactly a two-site molecule with two orbitals of either $e_g$ or $t_{2g}$ symmetry at quarter-filling. As a generic feature of both models one finds that the spin and orbital correlations have opposite signs in the low temperature regime when the orbitals are degenerate, in agreement with the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. While Hunds exchange coupling $J_H$ induces ferromagnetic spin correlations in both models, it is more efficient for $t_{2g}$ orbitals where the orbital quantum number is conserved along the hopping processes. We show that the ground state and finite temperature properties may change even qualitatively with increasing Coulomb interaction when the crystal field splitting of the two orbitals is finite, and the Goodenough-Kanamori rules may not be followed.
We present a study of the paramagnetic metallic and insulating phases of vanadium sesquioxide by means of the $N$th order muffin-tin orbital implementation of density functional theory combined with dynamical mean-field theory. The transition is shown to be driven by a correlation-induced enhancement of the crystal field splitting within the $t_{2g}$ manifold, which results in a suppression of the hybridization between the $a_{1g}$ and $e_g^{pi}$ bands. We discuss the changes in the effective quasi-particle band structure caused by the correlations and the corresponding self-energies. At temperatures of about 400 K we find the $a_{1g}$ orbitals to display coherent quasi-particle behavior, while a large imaginary part of the self-energy and broad features in the spectral function indicate that the $e_g^{pi}$ orbitals are still far above their coherence temperature. The local spectral functions are in excellent agreement with recent bulk sensitive photoemission data. Finally, we also make a prediction for angle-resolved photoemission experiments by calculating momentum-resolved spectral functions.

We study non-local correlations in a three-orbital Hubbard model defined on an extended one-dimensional chain using determinant quantum Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group methods. We focus on a parameter with robust Hunds coupling, which produces an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP) at intermediate values of the Hubbard U, as well as an orbitally ordered ferromagnetic insulating state at stronger coupling. An examination of the orbital and spin-correlation functions indicates that the orbital ordering occurs before the onset of magnetic correlations in this parameter regime as a function of temperature. In the OSMP, we find that the self-energy for the itinerant electrons is momentum dependent, indicating a degree of non-local correlations while the localized electrons have largely momentum independent self-energies. These non-local correlations also produce relative shifts of the hole-like and electron-like bands within our model. The overall momentum dependence of these quantities is strongly suppressed in the orbitally-ordered insulating phase.

We present a dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) study of the charge and orbital correlations in finite-size La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) nanoclusters. Upon nanostructuring LCMO to clusters of 3 nm diameter, the size reduction induces an insulator-to-metal transition in the high-temperature paramagnetic phase. This is ascribed to the reduction in charge disproportionation between Mn sites with different nominal valence [Das et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 197202 (2011)]. Here we show that upon further reducing the system size to a few-atom nanoclusters, quantum confinement effects come into play. These lead to the opposite effect: the nanocluster turns insulating again and the charge disproportionation between Mn sites, as well as the orbital polarization, are enhanced. Electron doping by means of external gate voltage on few-atom nanoclusters is found to trigger a site- and orbital-selective Mott transition. Our results suggest that LCMO nanoclusters could be employed for the realization of technological devices, exploiting the proximity to the Mott transition and its control by size and gate voltage.
