In this article, we present a rule-based approach for transliterating two mostly used orthographies in Sorani Kurdish. Our work consists of detecting a character in a word by removing the possible ambiguities and mapping it into the target orthography. We describe different challenges in Kurdish text mining and propose novel ideas concerning the transliteration task for Sorani Kurdish. Our transliteration system, named Wergor, achieves 82.79% overall precision and more than 99% in detecting the double-usage characters. We also present a manually transliterated corpus for Kurdish.

We present an experimental dataset, Basic Dataset for Sorani Kurdish Automatic Speech Recognition (BD-4SK-ASR), which we used in the first attempt in developing an automatic speech recognition for Sorani Kurdish. The objective of the project was to develop a system that automatically could recognize simple sentences based on the vocabulary which is used in grades one to three of the primary schools in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. We used CMUSphinx as our experimental environment. We developed a dataset to train the system. The dataset is publicly available for non-commercial use under the CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.

Sequence-to-Sequence (S2S) neural text generation models, especially the pre-trained ones (e.g., BART and T5), have exhibited compelling performance on various natural language generation tasks. However, the black-box nature of these models limits their application in tasks where specific rules (e.g., controllable constraints, prior knowledge) need to be executed. Previous works either design specific model structure (e.g., Copy Mechanism corresponding to the rule the generated output should include certain words in the source input) or implement specialized inference algorithm (e.g., Constrained Beam Search) to execute particular rules through the text generation. These methods require careful design case-by-case and are difficult to support multiple rules concurrently. In this paper, we propose a novel module named Neural Rule-Execution Tracking Machine that can be equipped into various transformer-based generators to leverage multiple rules simultaneously to guide the neural generation model for superior generation performance in a unified and scalable way. Extensive experimental results on several benchmarks verify the effectiveness of our proposed model in both controllable and general text generation.
Clinical text classification is an important problem in medical natural language processing. Existing studies have conventionally focused on rules or knowledge sources-based feature engineering, but only a few have exploited effective feature learning capability of deep learning methods. In this study, we propose a novel approach which combines rule-based features and knowledge-guided deep learning techniques for effective disease classification. Critical Steps of our method include identifying trigger phrases, predicting classes with very few examples using trigger phrases and training a convolutional neural network with word embeddings and Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) entity embeddings. We evaluated our method on the 2008 Integrating Informatics with Biology and the Bedside (i2b2) obesity challenge. The results show that our method outperforms the state of the art methods.

Sorani Kurdish, also known as Central Kurdish, has a complex morphology, particularly due to the patterns in which morphemes appear. Although several aspects of Kurdish morphology have been studied, such as pronominal endoclitics and Izafa constructions, Sorani Kurdish morphology has received trivial attention in computational linguistics. Moreover, some morphemes, such as the emphasis endoclitic =^ic{s}, and derivational morphemes have not been previously studied. To tackle the complex morphology of Sorani, we provide a thorough description of Sorani Kurdish morphological and morphophonological constructions in a formal way such that they can be used as finite-state transducers for morphological analysis and synthesis.
Its natural these days for people to know the local events from massive documents. Many texts contain location information, such as city name or road name, which is always incomplete or latent. Its significant to extract the administrative area of the text and organize the hierarchy of area, called location normalization. Existing detecting location systems either exclude hierarchical normalization or present only a few specific regions. We propose a system named ROIBase that normalizes the text by the Chinese hierarchical administrative divisions. ROIBase adopts a co-occurrence constraint as the basic framework to score the hit of the administrative area, achieves the inference by special embeddings, and expands the recall by the ROI (region of interest). It has high efficiency and interpretability because it mainly establishes on the definite knowledge and has less complex logic than the supervised models. We demonstrate that ROIBase achieves better performance against feasible solutions and is useful as a strong support system for location normalization.
