The spinel NiCr$_2$O$_4$ is known to show a ferrimagnetic transition at $T_c = 70$~K, and magneto-structural transitions at $T_s = 30$~K and $T_o = 20$~K@. We present a detailed magnetic and magnetocaloric effect (MCE $= -Delta S_{M}(T)$) study across these transitions. The $-Delta S_{M}(T)$ shows a positive anomaly at $T_c$, $T_s$, and $T_o$. In addition to these anomalies, we report a new unreported feature at $T approx 8.5$~K where $-Delta S_{M}(T)$ shows a negative anomaly or the inverse MCE. An Arrot plot of the isothermal magnetization data reveals important information about the nature of the possible phases revealed in $-Delta S_{M}(T)$. We have also made a scaling analysis of the $-Delta S_{M}(T)$ data around these transitions. This analysis suggests that the transition at $T_c$ is a second-order Mean field like transition, the transition at $T_s$ is not second order and is non-mean field like, while the new transition at $T = 8.5$~K is non-mean field like but is second order in nature. Our study demonstrates that magnetocaloric effect is sensitive to magneto-structural changes in materials and can be used for the identification of new phases and transitions.

In the spinel compound GeCo$_2$O$_4$, the Co$^{2+}$ pyrochlore sublattice presents remarkable magnetic field-induced behaviors that we unveil through neutron and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The Neel ordered magnetic phase is entered through a structural lowering of the cubic symmetry. In this phase, when a magnetic field is applied along a 2-fold cubic direction, a spin-flop transition of one fourth of the magnetic moments releases the magnetic frustration and triggers magnetostructural effects. At high field, these ultimately lead to an unusual spin reorientation associated to structural changes.
We present combined experimental and theoretical investigations on the magnetic and magnetocaloric behavior of Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$. The relative cooling power (RCP) which quantifies the usefulness of a magnetocaloric (MC) material is estimated to be $approx 300$ J/Kg near the ferromagnetic transition at $T_C approx 195$ K. This RCP is comparable to the best known MC materials. Additionally, the magnetic entropy change has a broad profile ($T_C - 50~{rm K} < T < T_C + 50~{rm K}$) leading to an enhancement in the working-range of temperatures for magnetocaloric based cooling. These features make Nd$_2$NiMnO$_6$ a superior magnetocaloric material compared for example, to the nonmagnetic counterpart Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$. We identify the mechanism for the enhanced RCP which can guide search for future MC materials.
SrTm$_2$O$_4$ has been investigated using heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization in pulsed fields, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. These results show that the system is highly anisotropic, has gapped low-energy dispersing magnetic excitations, and remains in a paramagnetic state down to 2K. Two theoretical crystal field models were used to describe the single-ion properties of SrTm$_2$O$_4$without any optimization procedures; a standard point-charge model and a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based model that uses Wannier functions. The DFT model was found to better describe the system at low energy by predicting a singlet ground state for one Tm site and a doublet for the second Tm site and anisotropy of second site Tm dominating the anisotropy of the system. Additionally, muon spin rotation/relaxation ($mu^+$psr) spectra reveal oscillations, typically a sign of long-range magnetic order. We attribute these observations to lattice distortion induced by muon implantation, causing renormalization of the gap size.

We present measurements of the optical spectra on single crystals of spinel-type compound cis. This material undergoes a sharp metal-insulator transition at 230 K. Upon entering the insulating state, the optical conductivity shows an abrupt spectral weight transfer and an optical excitation gap opens. In the metallic phase, Drude components in low frequencies and an interband transition peak at $sim 2 eV$ are observed. In the insulating phase, a new peak emerges around $0.5 eV$. This peak is attributed to the transition of electrons from the occupied Ir$^{3+}$ $t_{2g}$ state to upper Ir$^{4+}$ $t_{2g}$ subband resulting from the dimerization of Ir$^{4+}$ ions in association with the simultaneous formations of Ir$^{3+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ octamers as recently revealed by the x-ray diffraction experiment. Our experiments indicate that the band structure is reconstructed in the insulating phase due to the sudden structural transition.
Through analysis of single crystal neutron diffraction data, we present the magnetic structures of magnetoelectric Co4Nb2O9 under various magnetic fields. In zero-field, neutron diffraction experiments below TN=27 K reveal that the Co2+ moments order primarily along the a* direction without any spin canting along the c axis, manifested by the magnetic symmetry C2/c. The moments of nearest neighbor Co atoms order ferromagnetically with a small cant away from the next nearest neighbor Co moments along the c axis. In the applied magnetic field H//a, three magnetic domains were aligned with their major magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic field with no indication of magnetic phase transitions. The influences of magnetic fields on the magnetic structures associated with the observed magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.
