We report the possibility to generate tremendous light-field enhancements within shallow nano-trenches made in a high index dielectric material, because of resonant behaviours reminiscent of what we get with sub-wavelength plasmonic cavities. The high quality factors are explained through a modal analysis and can be tuned with appropriate design rules. The thin dielectric void gratings here simulated could be a relevant alternative to plasmon-based devices for chemical sensing, or could be used as efficient wavelength-selective photo-absorbers by taking weakly absorbing materials.

High-index dielectrics can confine light into nano-scale leading to enhanced nonlinear response. However, increased momentum in these media can deteriorate the overlap between different harmonics which hinders efficient nonlinear interaction in wavelength-scale resonators in the absence of momentum matching. Here, we propose an alternative approach for light confinement in anisotropic particles. The extra degree of freedom in anisotropic media allows us to control the evanescent waves near the center and the radial momentum away from the center, independently. This can lead to a strong light confinement as well as an excellent field overlap between different harmonics which is ideal for nonlinear wavelength conversion. Controlling the evanescent fields can also help to surpass the constrains on the radiation bandwidth of isotropic dielectric antennas. This can improve the light coupling into these particles, which is crucial for nano-scale nonlinear optics. We estimate the second-harmonic generation efficiency as well as optical parametric oscillation threshold in these particles to show the strong nonlinear response in these particles even away from the center of resonances. Our approach is promising to be realized experimentally and can be used for many applications, such as large-scale parallel sensing and computing.

We closely study the local amplifications of visible light on a thin dielectric slab presenting a sub-wavelength array of small, rectangular, bottom-closed holes. The high-quality Fabry-Perot resonances of eigen modes which vertically oscillate, and their corresponding near-field maps, especially inside the voids, are numerically quantified with RCWA and analytically interpreted through a quasi-exact modal expansion. This last method gives explicit opto-geometrical rules allowing to finely understand the general trends in 1D and 2D. In more advanced examples, we show that multi-cavity and/or slightly thicker two-dimensional gratings may generate anomalously frequency-susceptible surfaces over a broad spectral range. Also, dielectric membranes a few nanometers thick only, can catch light, with tremendous enhancements of the electric field intensity ($>10^6$) that largely extends in the surrounding space.
In this article, a 2D plasmonic waveguide loaded with all dielectric anisotropic metamaterial, consisting of alternative layers of Si-SiO2, has been theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed. Main characteristics of waveguide i.e. propagation constant, propagation length and normalized mode area have been calculated for different values of ridge width and height at telecommunication wavelength. The respective 1D structure of the waveguide has been analytically solved for the anisotropic ridge as a single uniaxial medium with dielectric tensor defined by Effective Medium Theory (EMT). The 2D structure has been analyzed numerically through FEM simulation using Mode analysis module in Comsol Multiphysics. Both the EMT and real multilayer structure have been considered in numerical simulations. Such structure with all dielectric metamaterial provides an extra degree of freedom namely fill factor, fraction of Si layer in a Si-SiO2 unit cell, to tune the propagation characteristics compared to the conventional DLSSP waveguide. A wide range of variations in all the characteristics have been observed for different fill factor values. Besides, the effect of the first interface layer has also been considered. Though all dielectric metamaterial has already been utilized in photonic waveguide as cladding, the implementation in plasmonic waveguide has not been investigated yet to our best knowledge. The proposed device might be a potential in deep sub-wavelength optics, PIC and optoelectronics.
We report a novel design of a compact wavelength add-drop multiplexer utilizing dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DLSPPW-based configuration exploits routing properties of directional couplers and filtering abilities of Bragg gratings. We present practical realization of a 20-$mu$m-long device operating at telecom wavelengths that can reroute optical signals separated by approximately 70 nm in the wavelength band. We characterize the performance of the fabricated structures using scanning near-field optical microscopy as well as leakage-radiation microscopy and support our findings with numerical simulations.
Besides purely academic interest, giant field enhancement within subwavelength particles at light scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave is important for numerous applications ranging from telecommunications to medicine and biology. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the enhancement of the intensity of the magnetic field in a high-index dielectric cylinder at the proximity of the dipolar Mie resonances by more than two orders of magnitude for both the TE and TM polarizations of the incident wave. We present a complete theoretical explanation of the effect and show that the phenomenon is very general - it should be observed for any high-index particles. The results explain the huge enhancement of nonlinear effects observed recently in optics, suggesting a new landscape for all-dielectric nonlinear nanoscale photonics.
