The Watanabe-Strogatz and Ott-Antonsen theories provided a seminal framework for rigorous and comprehensive studies of collective phenomena in a broad class of paradigmatic models for ensembles of coupled oscillators. Recently, a circular cumulant approach was suggested for constructing the perturbation theory for the Ott-Antonsen approach. In this paper, we derive the relations between the distribution of Watanabe-Strogatz phases and the circular cumulants of the original phases. These relations are important for the interpretation of the circular cumulant approach in the context of the Watanabe-Strogatz and Ott-Antonsen theories. Special attention is paid to the case of hierarchy of circular cumulants, which is generally relevant for constructing perturbation theories for the Watanabe-Strogatz and Ott-Antonsen approaches.

The emergence of order in collective dynamics is a fascinating phenomenon that characterizes many natural systems consisting of coupled entities. Synchronization is such an example where individuals, usually represented by either linear or nonlinear oscillators, can spontaneously act coherently with each other when the interactions configuration fulfills certain conditions. However, synchronization is not always perfect, and the coexistence of coherent and incoherent oscillators, broadly known in the literature as chimera states, is also possible. Although several attempts have been made to explain how chimera states are created, their emergence, stability, and robustness remain a long-debated question. We propose an approach that aims to establish a robust mechanism through which chimeras originate. We first introduce a stability-breaking method where clusters of synchronized oscillators can emerge. Similarly, one or more clusters of oscillators may remain incoherent within yielding a particular class of patterns that we here name cluster chimera states.
We analyze limit cycle oscillators under perturbation constructed as a product of two signals, namely, an envelope with a period close to natural period of an oscillator and a high-frequency carrier signal. A theory for obtaining an envelope waveform that achieves the maximal frequency interval of entrained oscillators is presented. The optimization problem for fixed power and maximal allowed amplitude is solved by employing the phase reduction method and the Pontryagins maximum principle. We have shown that the optimal envelope waveform is a bang-bang-type solution. Also, we have found inversion symmetry that relates two signals with different powers, but the same interval of entrained frequencies. The theoretical results are confirmed numerically on FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators.

We introduce a special class of random matrices (DUE) whose spectral statistics corresponds to statistics of microscopical quantities detected in vehicular flows. Comparing the level spacing distribution (for ordered eigenvalues in unfolded spectra of DUE matrices) with the time-clearance distribution extracted from various areas of the flux-density diagram (evaluated from original traffic data measured on Czech expressways with high occupancies) we demonstrate that the set of classical systems showing an universality associated with Random Matrix Ensembles can be extended by traffic systems.

We investigate linear interference effects between a nonlinear plane wave and bright solitons, which are admitted by pair-transition coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate. We demonstrate the interference effects can induce several localized waves possessing distinctive wave structures, mainly including anti-dark soliton, W-shaped soliton, multi-peak soliton, Kuznetsov-Ma like breather, and multi-peak breather. Especially, the explicit conditions for them are clarified by a phase diagram based on the linear interference properties. Furthermore, the interactions between these localized waves are discussed. The detailed analysis indicate that soliton-soliton interaction induced phase shift brings the collision between these localized waves be inelastic for soliton involving collision, and be elastic for breathers. These characters come from that the profile of solitons depend on relative phase between bright soliton and plane wave, and the profile of breathers do not depend on the relative phase. These results would motivate more discussions on linear interference between other nonlinear waves. Especially, the solitons or breathers obtained here are not related with modulational instability. The underlying reasons are discussed in detail.
An equation for the evolution of the distribution of wealth in a population of economic agents making binary transactions with a constant total amount of money has recently been proposed by one of us (RLR). This equation takes the form of an iterated nonlinear map of the distribution of wealth. The equilibrium distribution is known and takes a rather simple form. If this distribution is such that, at some time, the higher momenta of the distribution exist, one can find exactly their law of evolution. A seemingly simple extension of the laws of exchange yields also explicit iteration formulae for the higher momenta, but with a major difference with the original iteration because high order momenta grow indefinitely. This provides a quantitative model where the spreading of wealth, namely the difference between the rich and the poor, tends to increase with time.
