In real-world systems, phase transitions often materialize abruptly, making it difficult to design appropriate controls that help uncover underlying processes. Some agent-based computational models display transformations similar to phase transitions. For such cases, it is possible to elicit detailed underlying processes that can be subsequently tested for applicability in real-world systems. In a genetic algorithm, we investigate how a modest difference in the concentration of correct and incorrect knowledge leads to radically different outcomes obtained through learning efforts by a group of agents. We show that a difference in concentration of correct and incorrect knowledge triggers virtuous and vicious cycles that impact the emergent outcome. When virtuous cycles are in operation, delaying the onset of equilibrium attains superior outcomes. For the vicious cycles, reaching equilibrium quickly attains superior outcomes. Our approach helps uncover simple mechanisms by which Nature works, jettisoning the yoke of unrealistic assumptions endemic in mathematics-based approaches. Our explanatory model helps direct research to investigate concentrations of inputs that obtains outcomes on the favourable side of phase transitions. For example, by tracking change in concentration of relevant parameters, scientists may look for reasons why cells cease to reproduce fit cells in organs. This can help design rejuvenation of organs. Further, in the world of physics, our model may inform in situations where the dominant Ising model falls short.

We show that accounting for internal character among interacting, heterogeneous entities generates rich phase transition behavior between isolation and cohesive dynamical grouping. Our analytical and numerical calculations reveal different critical points arising for different character-dependent grouping mechanisms. These critical points move in opposite directions as the populations diversity decreases. Our analytical theory helps explain why a particular class of universality is so common in the real world, despite fundamental differences in the underlying entities. Furthermore, it correctly predicts the non-monotonic temporal variation in connectivity observed recently in one such system.

In this work we use a proven model to study a dynamic duopolistic competition between an old and a new technology which, through improved technical performance - e.g. data transmission capacity - fight in order to conquer market share. The process whereby an old technology fights a new one off through own improvements has been named sailing-ship effect. In the simulations proposed, intentional improvements of both the old and the new technology are affected by the values of three key parameters: one scientific-technological, one purely technological and the third purely economic. The interaction between these components gives rise to different outcomes in terms of prevalence of one technology over the other.

In this paper, the impact of escaping in couples on the evacuation dynamics has been investigated via experiments and modeling. Two sets of experiments have been implemented, in which pedestrians are asked to escape either in individual or in couples. The experiments show that escaping in couples can decrease the average evacuation time. Moreover, it is found that the average evacuation time gap is essentially constant, which means that the evacuation speed essentially does not depend on the number of pedestrians that have not yet escaped. To model the evacuation dynamics, an improved social force model has been proposed, in which it is assumed that the driving force of a pedestrian cannot be fulfilled when the composition of physical forces exceeds a threshold because the pedestrian cannot keep his/her body balance under this circumstance. To model the effect of escaping in couples, attraction force has been introduced between the partners. Simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.
In the framework of the evolutionary dynamics of the Prisoners Dilemma game on complex networks, we investigate the possibility that the average level of cooperation shows hysteresis under quasi-static variations of a model parameter (the temptation to defect). Under the discrete replicator strategy updating rule, for both Erdos-Renyi and Barabasi-Albert graphs we observe cooperation hysteresis cycles provided one reaches tipping point values of the parameter; otherwise, perfect reversibility is obtained. The selective fixation of cooperation at certain nodes and its organization in cooperator clusters, that are surrounded by fluctuating strategists, allows the rationalization of the lagging behind behavior observed.
The spontaneous formation and subsequent growth, dissolution, merger and competition of social groups bears similarities to physical phase transitions in metastable finite systems. We examine three different scenarios, percolation, spinodal decomposition and nucleation, to describe the formation of social groups of varying size and density. In our agent-based model, we use a feedback between the opinions of agents and their ability to establish links. Groups can restrict further link formation, but agents can also leave if costs exceed the group benefits. We identify the critical parameters for costs/benefits and social influence to obtain either one large group or the stable coexistence of several groups with different opinions. Analytic investigations allow to derive different critical densities that control the formation and coexistence of groups. Our novel approach sheds new light on the early stage of network growth and the emergence of large connected components.
