Consider a population of individuals that observe an underlying state of nature that evolves over time. The population is classified into different levels depending on the hierarchical influence that dictates how the individuals at each level form an opinion on the state. The population is sampled sequentially by a pollster and the nodes (or individuals) respond to the questions asked by the pollster. This paper considers the following problem: How should the pollster poll the hierarchical social network to estimate the state while minimizing the polling cost (measurement cost and uncertainty in the Bayesian state estimate)? This paper proposes adaptiv

Online social network has been one of the most important platforms for viral marketing. Most of existing researches about diffusion of adoptions of new products on networks are about one diffusion. That is, only one piece of information about the product is spread on the network. However, in fact, one product may have multiple features and the information about different features may spread independently in social network. When a user would like to purchase the product, he would consider all of the features of the product comprehensively not just consider one. Based on this, we propose a novel problem, multi-feature budgeted profit maximization (MBPM) problem, which first considers budgeted profit maximization under multiple features propagation of one product. Given a social network with each node having an activation cost and a profit, MBPM problem seeks for a seed set with expected cost no more than the budget to make the total expected profit as large as possible. We consider MBPM problem under the adaptive setting, where seeds are chosen iteratively and next seed is selected according to current diffusion results. We study adaptive MBPM problem under two models, oracle model and noise model. The oracle model assumes conditional expected marginal profit of any node could be obtained in O(1) time and a (1-1/e) expected approximation policy is proposed. Under the noise model, we estimate conditional expected marginal profit of a node by modifying the EPIC algorithm and propose an efficient policy, which could return a (1-exp({epsilon}-1)) expected approximation ratio. Several experiments are conducted on six realistic datasets to compare our proposed policies with their corresponding non-adaptive algorithms and some heuristic adaptive policies. Experimental results show efficiencies and superiorities of our policies.
In this paper we address the problem of inferring social structure and dominance relationships in a group of rhesus macaques (a species of monkey) using only position data captured using RFID tags. Automatic inference of the social structure in an animal group enables a number of important capabilities, including: 1) A verifiable measure of how the social structure is affected by an intervention such as a change in the environment, or the introduction of another animal, and 2) A potentially significant reduction in person hours normally used for assessing these changes. Social structure in a group is an important indicator of its members relative level of access to resources and has interesting implications for an individuals health and learning in groups. There are two main quantitative criteria assessed in order to infer the social structure; Time spent close to conspecifics, and displacements. An interaction matrix is used to represent the total duration of events detected as grooming behavior between any two monkeys. This forms an undirected tie-strength (closeness of relationships) graph. A directed graph of hierarchy is constructed by using the well cited assumption of a linear hierarchy for rhesus macaques. Events that contribute to the adjacency matrix for this graph are withdrawals or displacements where a lower ranked monkey moves away from a higher ranked monkey. Displacements are one of the observable behaviors that can act as a strong indication of tie-strength and dominance. To quantify the directedness of interaction during these events we construct histograms of the dot products of motion orientation and relative position. This gives us a measure of how much time a monkey spends in moving towards or away from other group members.

A key step in influence maximization in online social networks is the identification of a small number of users, known as influencers, who are able to spread influence quickly and widely to other users. The evolving nature of the topological structure of these networks makes it difficult to locate and identify these influencers. In this paper, we propose an adaptive agent-based evolutionary approach to address this problem in the context of both static and dynamic networks. This approach is shown to be able to adapt the solution as the network evolves. It is also applicable to large-scale networks due to its distributed framework. Evaluation of our approach is performed by using both synthetic networks and real-world datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art seeding algorithms in terms of maximizing influence.

In recent years, recommendation systems have been widely applied in many domains. These systems are impotent in affecting users to choose the behavior that the system expects. Meanwhile, providing incentives has been proven to be a more proactive way to affect users behaviors. Due to the budget limitation, the number of users who can be incentivized is restricted. In this light, we intend to utilize social influence existing among users to enhance the effect of incentivization. Through incentivizing influential users directly, their followers in the social network are possibly incentivized indirectly. However, in many real-world scenarios, the topological structure of the network is usually unknown, which makes identifying influential users difficult. To tackle the aforementioned challenges, in this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for exploring influential users in unknown networks, which can estimate the influential relationships among users based on their historical behaviors and without knowing the topology of the network. Meanwhile, we design an adaptive incentive allocation approach that determines incentive values based on users preferences and their influence ability. We evaluate the performance of the proposed approaches by conducting experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.
Social networks readily transmit information, albeit with less than perfect fidelity. We present a large-scale measurement of this imperfect information copying mechanism by examining the dissemination and evolution of thousands of memes, collectively replicated hundreds of millions of times in the online social network Facebook. The information undergoes an evolutionary process that exhibits several regularities. A memes mutation rate characterizes the population distribution of its variants, in accordance with the Yule process. Variants further apart in the diffusion cascade have greater edit distance, as would be expected in an iterative, imperfect replication process. Some text sequences can confer a replicative advantage; these sequences are abundant and transfer laterally between different memes. Subpopulations of the social network can preferentially transmit a specific variant of a meme if the variant matches their beliefs or culture. Understanding the mechanism driving change in diffusing information has important implications for how we interpret and harness the information that reaches us through our social networks.
