We present a method that uses radio-frequency pulses to cancel the quadrupole shift in optical clock transitions. Quadrupole shifts are an inherent inhomogeneous broadening mechanism in trapped ion crystals, limiting current optical ion clocks to work with a single probe ion. Cancelling this shift at each interrogation cycle of the ion frequency allows the use of $N>1$ ions in clocks, thus reducing the uncertainty in the clock frequency by $sqrt{N}$ according to the standard quantum limit. Our sequence relies on the tensorial nature of the quadrupole shift, and thus also cancels other tensorial shifts, such as the tensor ac stark shift. We experimentally demonstrate our sequence on three and seven $^{88}mathrm{Sr}^{+}$ ions trapped in a linear Paul trap, using correlation spectroscopy. We show a reduction of the quadrupole shift difference between ions to $approx20$ mHzs level where other shifts, such as the relativistic 2$^{mathrm{nd}}$ order Doppler shift, are expected to limit our spectral resolution. In addition, we show that using radio-frequency dynamic decoupling we can also cancel the effect of 1$^{mathrm{st}}$ order Zeeman shifts.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method for detection of light scalar Dark Matter (DM), through probing temporal oscillations of fundamental constants in an atomic optical transition. Utilizing the quantum information notion of Dynamic Decoupling (DD) in a table-top setting, we are able to obtain model-independent bounds on variations of $alpha$ and $m_e$ at frequencies up to the MHz scale. We interpret our results to constrain the parameter space of light scalar DM field models. We consider the generic case, where the couplings of the DM field to the photon and to the electron are independent, as well as the case of a relaxion DM model, including the scenario of a DM boson star centered around Earth. Given the particular nature of DD, allowing to directly observe the oscillatory behaviour of coherent DM, and considering future experimental improvements, we conclude that our proposed method could be complimentary to, and possibly competitive with, gravitational probes of light scalar DM.
We demonstrate near-complete cancellation of the differential light shift of a two-photon magnetic-field-insensitive microwave hyperfine (clock) transition in $^{87}$Rb atoms trapped in an optical lattice. Up to $95(2)%$ of the differential light shift is canceled while maintaining magnetic-field insensitivity. This technique should have applications in quantum information and frequency metrology.
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme which effects hyperfine averaging during a Ramsey interrogation of a clock transition. The method eliminates the need to average over multiple optical transitions, reduces the sensitivity of the clock to its environment, and reduces inhomogeneous broadening in a multi-ion clock. The method is compatible with auto-balanced Ramsey spectroscopy, which facilitates elimination of residual shifts due to imperfect implementation and ac Stark shifts from the optical probe. We demonstrate the scheme using correlation spectroscopy of the $^1S_0$-to-$^3D_1$ clock transition in a three-ion Lu+ clock. From the demonstration we are able to provide a measurement of the $^3D_1$ quadrupole moment, $Theta(^3D_1)=0.634(9)ea_0^2$.
The influence of oscillating quadrupole fields on atomic energy levels is examined theoretically and general expressions for the quadrupole matrix elements are given. The results are relevant to any ion-based clock in which one of the clock states supports a quadrupole moment. Clock shifts are estimated for $^{176}$Lu$^+$ and indicate that coupling to the quadrupole field would not be a limitation to clock accuracy at the $lesssim10^{-19}$ level. Nevertheless, a method is suggested that would allow this shift to be calibrated. This method utilises a resonant quadrupole coupling that enables the quadrupole moment of the atom to be measured. A proof-of-principle demonstration is given using $^{138}$Ba$^+$, in which the quadrupole moment of the $D_{5/2}$ state is estimated to be $Theta=3.229(89) e a_0^2$.

We investigate phase shifts in the strong coupling regime of single-atom cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). On the light transmitted through the system, we observe a phase shift associated with an antiresonance and show that both its frequency and width depend solely on the atom, despite the strong coupling to the cavity. This shift is optically controllable and reaches 140 degrees - the largest ever reported for a single emitter. Our result offers a new technique for the characterization of complex integrated quantum circuits.
