We consider the dynamics of electrons in combined strong laser and Coulomb fields. Under a timescale separation condition, we reduce this dynamics to a guiding-center framework. More precisely, we derive a hierarchy of models for the guiding-center dynamics based on averaging over the fast motion of the electron using Lie transforms. The reduced models we obtain describe well the different ionization channels, in particular, the conditions under which an electron is rescattered by the ionic core or is directly ionized. The comparison between these models highlights the models which are best suited for a qualitative and quantitative agreement with the parent dynamics.

Photoelectron momentum distributions (PMDs) from atoms and molecules undergo qualitative changes as laser parameters are varied. We present a model to interpret the shape of the PMDs. The electrons motion is guided by a fictitious particle in our model, clearly characterizing two distinct dynamical behaviors: direct ionization and rescattering. As laser ellipticity is varied, our model reproduces the bifurcation in the PMDs seen in experiments.

Since the late 1950s, the dynamics of a charged particles ``guiding center in a strong, inhomogeneous magnetic field have been understood in terms of near-identity coordinate transformations. The basic idea has been to approximately transform away the coupling between the fast gyration around magnetic fields lines and the remaining slow dynamics. This basic understanding now serves as a foundation for describing the kinetic theory of strongly magnetized plasmas. I present a new way to understand guiding center dynamics that does not involve complicated coordinate transformations. Starting from a dynamical systems formulation of the motion of parameterized loops in a charged particles phase space, I identify a formal slow manifold in loop space. Dynamics on this formal slow manifold are equivalent to guiding center dynamics to all orders in perturbation theory. After demonstrating that loop space dynamics comprises an infinite-dimensional noncanonical Hamiltonian system, I recover the well-known Hamiltonian formulation of guiding center motion by restricting the (pre-) symplectic structure on loop space to the finite-dimensional guiding center formal slow manifold.
We revisit the stabilization of ionization of atoms subjected to a superintense laser pulse using nonlinear dynamics. We provide an explanation for the lack of complete ionization at high intensity and for the decrease of the ionization probability as intensity is increased. We investigate the role of each part of the laser pulse (ramp-up, plateau, ramp-down) in this process. We emphasize the role of the choice for the ionization criterion, energy versus distance criterion.
Ballistic semiconductor structures have allowed the realization of optics-like phenomena in electronics, including magnetic focusing and lensing. An extension that appears unique to graphene is to use both n and p carrier types to create electronic analogs of optical devices having both positive and negative indices of refraction. Here, we use gate-controlled density with both p and n carrier types to demonstrate the analog of the fiber-optic guiding in graphene. Two basic effects are investigated: (1) bipolar p-n junction guiding, based on the principle of angle-selective transmission though the graphene p-n interface, and (2) unipolar fiber-optic guiding, using total internal reflection controlled by carrier density. Modulation of guiding efficiency through gating is demonstrated and compared to numerical simulations, which indicates that interface roughness limits guiding performance, with few-nanometer effective roughness extracted. The development of p-n and fiber-optic guiding in graphene may lead to electrically reconfigurable wiring in high-mobility devices.
Based on a combined quantum-classical treatment, a complete study of the strong field dynamics of H2+, i.e. including all nuclear and electronic DOF as well as dissociation and ionization, is presented. We find that the ro-vibrational nuclear dynamics enhances dissociation and, at the same time, suppresses ionization, confirming experimental observations by I. Ben-Itzhak et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 073002 (2005)]. In addition and counter-intuitively, it is shown that for large initial vibrational excitation ionization takes place favorably at large angles between the laser polarization and molecular axis. A local ionization model delivers a transparent explanation of these findings.
