In this paper, we consider an uplink heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN), where a macro base station (BS) coexists with many remote radio heads (RRHs). For cost-savings, only the BS is connected to the baseband unit (BBU) pool via fiber links. The RRHs, however, are associated with the BBU pool through wireless fronthaul links, which share the spectrum resource with radio access networks. Due to the limited capacity of fronthaul, the compress-and-forward scheme is employed, such as point-to-point compression or Wyner-Ziv coding. Different decoding strategies are also considered. This work aims to maximize the uplink ergodic sum-rate (SR) by jointly optimizing quantization noise matrix and bandwidth allocation between radio access networks and fronthaul links, which is a mixed time-scale issue. To reduce computational complexity and communication overhead, we introduce an approximation problem of the joint optimization problem based on large-dimensional random matrix theory, which is a slow time-scale issue because it only depends on statistical channel information. Finally, an algorithm based on Dinkelbachs algorithm is proposed to find the optimal solution to the approximate problem. In summary, this work provides an economic solution to the challenge of constrained fronthaul capacity, and also provides a framework with less computational complexity to study how bandwidth allocation and fronthaul compression can affect the SR maximization problem.
In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), the baseband units and radio units of base stations are separated, which requires high-capacity fronthaul links connecting both parts. In this paper, we consider the delay-aware fronthaul allocation problem for C-RANs. The stochastic optimization problem is formulated as an infinite horizon average cost Markov decision process. To deal with the curse of dimensionality, we derive a closed-form approximate priority function and the associated error bound using perturbation analysis. Based on the closed-form approximate priority function, we propose a low-complexity delay-aware fronthaul allocation algorithm solving the per-stage optimization problem. The proposed solution is further shown to be asymptotically optimal for sufficiently small cross link path gains. Finally, the proposed fronthaul allocation algorithm is compared with various baselines through simulations, and it is shown that significant performance gain can be achieved.
The cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is a promising network architecture for future mobile communications, and one practical hurdle for its large scale implementation is the stringent requirement of high capacity and low latency fronthaul connecting the distributed remote radio heads (RRH) to the centralized baseband pools (BBUs) in the C-RAN. To improve the scalability of C-RAN networks, it is very important to take the fronthaul loading into consideration in the signal detection, and it is very desirable to reduce the fronthaul loading in C-RAN systems. In this paper, we consider uplink C-RAN systems and we propose a distributed fronthaul compression scheme at the distributed RRHs and a joint recovery algorithm at the BBUs by deploying the techniques of distributed compressive sensing (CS). Different from conventional distributed CS, the CS problem in C-RAN system needs to incorporate the underlying effect of multi-access fading for the end-to-end recovery of the transmitted signals from the users. We analyze the performance of the proposed end-to-end signal recovery algorithm and we show that the aggregate measurement matrix in C-RAN systems, which contains both the distributed fronthaul compression and multiaccess fading, can still satisfy the restricted isometry property with high probability. Based on these results, we derive tradeoff results between the uplink capacity and the fronthaul loading in C-RAN systems.
In this paper, energy efficient resource allocation is considered for an uplink hybrid system, where non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is integrated into orthogonal multiple access (OMA). To ensure the quality of service for the users, a minimum rate requirement is pre-defined for each user. We formulate an energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem by jointly optimizing the user clustering, channel assignment and power allocation. To address this hard problem, a many-to-one bipartite graph is first constructed considering the users and resource blocks (RBs) as the two sets of nodes. Based on swap matching, a joint user-RB association and power allocation scheme is proposed, which converges within a limited number of iterations. Moreover, for the power allocation under a given user-RB association, we first derive the feasibility condition. If feasible, a low-complexity algorithm is proposed, which obtains optimal EE under any successive interference cancellation (SIC) order and an arbitrary number of users. In addition, for the special case of two users per cluster, analytical solutions are provided for the two SIC orders, respectively. These solutions shed light on how the power is allocated for each user to maximize the EE. Numerical results are presented, which show that the proposed joint user-RB association and power allocation algorithm outperforms other hybrid multiple access based and OMA-based schemes.
In this paper, the problem of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) deployment, power allocation, and bandwidth allocation is investigated for a UAV-assisted wireless system operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies. In the studied model, one UAV can service ground users using the THz frequency band. However, the highly uncertain THz channel will introduce new challenges to the UAV location, user power, and bandwidth allocation optimization problems. Therefore, it is necessary to design a novel framework to deploy UAVs in the THz wireless systems. This problem is formally posed as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the total delays of the uplink and downlink transmissions between the UAV and the ground users by jointly optimizing the deployment of the UAV, the transmit power and the bandwidth of each user. The communication delay is crucial for emergency communications. To tackle this nonconvex delay minimization problem, an alternating algorithm is proposed while iteratively solving three subproblems: location optimization subproblem, power control subproblem, and bandwidth allocation subproblem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the transmission delay by up to $59.3%$, $49.8%$ and $75.5%$ respectively compared to baseline algorithms that optimize only UAV location, bandwidth allocation or transmit power control.
Joint user selection (US) and vector precoding (US-VP) is proposed for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) downlink. The main difference between joint US-VP and conventional US is that US depends on data symbols for joint US-VP, whereas conventional US is independent of data symbols. The replica method is used to analyze the performance of joint US-VP in the large-system limit, where the numbers of transmit antennas, users, and selected users tend to infinity while their ratios are kept constant. The analysis under the assumptions of replica symmetry (RS) and 1-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) implies that optimal data-independent US provides nothing but the same performance as random US in the large-system limit, whereas data-independent US is capacity-achieving as only the number of users tends to infinity. It is shown that joint US-VP can provide a substantial reduction of the energy penalty in the large-system limit. Consequently, joint US-VP outperforms separate US-VP in terms of the achievable sum rate, which consists of a combination of vector precoding (VP) and data-independent US. In particular, data-dependent US can be applied to general modulation, and implemented with a greedy algorithm.
