Combining Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and a $mu$-focused Laser, we have performed scanning ARPES microscopy measurements of the domain population within the nematic phase of FeSe single crystals. We are able to demonstrate a variation of the domain population density on a scale of a few 10 $mu$m while constraining the upper limit of the single domain size to less than 5 $mu m$. This experiment serves as a demonstration of how combining the advantages of high resolution Laser ARPES and an ultimate control over the spatial dimension can improve investigations of materials by reducing the cross contamination of spectral features of different domains.

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and two-photon photoemission spectroscopy (2PPES) are employed to study the valence electronic structure of the Weyl semimetal candidate Td-WTe$_2$ along two high symmetry directions and for binding energies between $approx$ -1 eV and 5 eV. The experimental data show a good agreement with band structure calculations. Polarization dependent measurements provide furthermore information on initial and intermediate state symmetry properties with respect to the mirror plane of the Td structure of WTe$_2$.
We present a detailed study of the spatial resolution of our time-resolved neutron imaging detector utilizing a new neutron position reconstruction method that improves both spatial resolution and event reconstruction efficiency. Our prototype detector system, employing a micro-pattern gaseous detector known as the micro-pixel chamber ({mu}PIC) coupled with a field-programmable-gate-array-based data acquisition system, combines 100{mu}m-level spatial and sub-{mu}s time resolutions with excellent gamma rejection and high data rates, making it well suited for applications in neutron radiography at high-intensity, pulsed neutron sources. From data taken at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility within the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), the spatial resolution was found to be approximately Gaussian with a sigma of 103.48 +/- 0.77 {mu}m (after correcting for beam divergence). This is a significant improvement over that achievable with our previous reconstruction method (334 +/- 13 {mu}m), and compares well with conventional neutron imaging detectors and with other high-rate detectors currently under development. Further, a detector simulation indicates that a spatial resolution of less than 60 {mu}m may be possible with optimization of the gas characteristics and {mu}PIC structure. We also present an example of imaging combined with neutron resonance absorption spectroscopy.
We present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the superconducting gap in FeSe. The gap function is determined in a full Brillouin zone including all Fermi surfaces and kz-dependence. We find significant anisotropy of the superconducting gap in all momentum directions. While the in-plane anisotropy can be explained by both, nematicity-induced pairing anisotropy and orbital-selective pairing, the kz-anisotropy requires additional refinement of theoretical approaches.
The structural and electronic properties of thermally reduced SrTiO3(100) single crystals have been investigated using a probe with real- and reciprocal-space sensitivity: a synchrotron radiation microsopic setup which offers the possibility of Scanning Photoemission Microscopy and Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARPES) down to the nanometric scale. We have spectroscopically imaged the chemical composition of samples which present reproducible and suitable low-energy electron diffraction patterns after following well-established thermal reduction protocols. At the micrometric scale, Ca-rich areas have been directly imaged using high-energy resolution core level photoemission. Moreover, we have monitored the effect of Ca segregation on different features of the SrTiO3(100) electronic band structure, measuring ARPES inside, outside and at the interface of surface inhomogeneities with the identified Ca-rich areas. In particular, the interaction of Ca with the well-known intragap localized state, previously attributed to oxygen vacancies, has been investigated. Moreover, the combination of direct imaging and spectroscopic techniques with high spatial resolution has clarified the long-standing dilemma related to the bulk or surface character of Ca segregation in SrTiO3. Our results present solid evidence that the penetration depth of Ca segregation is very small. In contrast to what has been previously proposed, the origin of long-range surface reconstructions can unlikely be associated to Ca due to strong local variations of its surface concentration.

Two-dimensional crystals of semimetallic van der Waals materials hold much potential for the realization of novel phases, as exemplified by the recent discoveries of a polar metal in few layer 1T-WTe$_2$ and of a quantum spin Hall state in monolayers of the same material. Understanding these phases is particularly challenging because little is known from experiment about the momentum space electronic structure of ultrathin crystals. Here, we report direct electronic structure measurements of exfoliated mono-, bi-, and few-layer 1T-WTe$_2$ by laser-based micro-focus angle resolved photoemission. This is achieved by encapsulating with monolayer graphene a flake of WTe$_2$ comprising regions of different thickness. Our data support the recent identification of a quantum spin Hall state in monolayer 1T-WTe$_2$ and reveal strong signatures of the broken inversion symmetry in the bilayer. We finally discuss the sensitivity of encapsulated samples to contaminants following exposure to ambient atmosphere.
