A building design aiding tool for space allocation and thermal performance optimization is being developed to help practitioners during the building space planning phase, predicting how it will behave regarding energy consumption and thermal comfort. The tool evaluates, ranks, and optimizes generated floor plans according to thermal performance criteria, using the dynamic simulation program EnergyPlus. The tool is currently able to use a wide variety of EnergyPlus objects, allowing for various template and detailed HVAC, DHW, and thermal and electrical energy production systems and components, as well as numerous internal gains types, construction elements and energy saving controls, to be accounted for and simulated in the generated buildings. This paper presents the tool overall concept as well as the main features regarding dynamic simulation. Some performance results are presented for distinct systems to illustrate the use and potential of the tool.

With the growing popularity of Autonomous Vehicles, more opportunities have bloomed in the context of Human-Vehicle Interactions. However, the lack of comprehensive and concrete database support for such specific use case limits relevant studies in the whole design spaces. In this paper, we present our work-in-progress BROOK, a public multi-modal database with facial video records, which could be used to characterize drivers affective states and driving styles. We first explain how we over-engineer such database in details, and what we have gained through a ten-month study. Then we showcase a Neural Network-based predictor, leveraging BROOK, which supports multi-modal prediction (including physiological data of heart rate and skin conductance and driving status data of speed)through facial videos. Finally, we discuss related issues when building such a database and our future directions in the context of BROOK. We believe BROOK is an essential building block for future Human-Vehicle Interaction Research.
Although route and exit choice in complex buildings are important aspects of pedestrian behaviour, studies predominantly investigated pedestrian movement in a single level. This paper presents an innovative VR tool that was designed to investigate pedestrian route and exit choice in a multi-story building. This tool supports free navigation and collects pedestrian walking trajectories, head movements and gaze points automatically. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the VR tool from objective standpoints (i.e., pedestrian behaviour) and subjective standpoints (i.e., the feeling of presence, system usability, simulation sickness). The results show that the VR tool allows for accurate collection of pedestrian behavioural data in the complex building. Moreover, the results of the questionnaire report high realism of the virtual environment, high immersive feeling, high usability, and low simulator sickness. This paper contributes by showcasing an innovative approach of applying VR technologies to study pedestrian behaviour in complex and realistic environments.
Recent studies show the effectiveness of interview chatbots for information elicitation. However, designing an effective interview chatbot is non-trivial. Few tools exist to help designers design, evaluate, and improve an interview chatbot iteratively. Based on a formative study and literature reviews, we propose a computational framework for quantifying the performance of interview chatbots. Incorporating the framework, we have developed iChatProfile, an assistive chatbot design tool that can automatically generate a profile of an interview chatbot with quantified performance metrics and offer design suggestions for improving the chatbot based on such metrics. To validate the effectiveness of iChatProfile, we designed and conducted a between-subject study that compared the performance of 10 interview chatbots designed with or without using iChatProfile. Based on the live chats between the 10 chatbots and 1349 users, our results show that iChatProfile helped the designers build significantly more effective interview chatbots, improving both interview quality and user experience.
Volumetric design is the first and critical step for professional building design, where architects not only depict the rough 3D geometry of the building but also specify the programs to form a 2D layout on each floor. Though 2D layout generation for a single story has been widely studied, there is no developed method for multi-story buildings. This paper focuses on volumetric design generation conditioned on an input program graph. Instead of outputting dense 3D voxels, we propose a new 3D representation named voxel graph that is both compact and expressive for building geometries. Our generator is a cross-modal graph neural network that uses a pointer mechanism to connect the input program graph and the output voxel graph, and the whole pipeline is trained using the adversarial framework. The generated designs are evaluated qualitatively by a user study and quantitatively using three metrics: quality, diversity, and connectivity accuracy. We show that our model generates realistic 3D volumetric designs and outperforms previous methods and baselines.
We have developed an efficient simulation tool GOLLUM for the computation of electrical, spin and thermal transport characteristics of complex nanostructures. The new multi-scale, multi-terminal tool addresses a number of new challenges and functionalities that have emerged in nanoscale-scale transport over the past few years. To illustrate the flexibility and functionality of GOLLUM, we present a range of demonstrator calculations encompassing charge, spin and thermal transport, corrections to density functional theory such as LDA+U and spectral adjustments, transport in the presence of non-collinear magnetism, the quantum-Hall effect, Kondo and Coulomb blockade effects, finite-voltage transport, multi-terminal transport, quantum pumps, superconducting nanostructures, environmental effects and pulling curves and conductance histograms for mechanically-controlled-break-junction experiments.
