We study positioning of high-speed trains in 5G new radio (NR) networks by utilizing specific NR synchronization signals. The studies are based on simulations with 3GPP-specified radio channel models including path loss, shadowing and fast fading effects. The considered positioning approach exploits measurement of Time-Of-Arrival (TOA) and Angle-Of-Departure (AOD), which are estimated from beamformed NR synchronization signals. Based on the given measurements and the assumed train movement model, the train position is tracked by using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which is able to handle the non-linear relationship between the TOA and AOD measurements, and the estimated train position parameters. It is shown that in the considered scenario the TOA measurements are able to achieve better accuracy compared to the AOD measurements. However, as shown by the results, the best tracking performance is achieved, when both of the measurements are considered. In this case, a very high, sub-meter, tracking accuracy can be achieved for most (>75%) of the tracking time, thus achieving the positioning accuracy requirements envisioned for the 5G NR. The pursued high-accuracy and high-availability positioning technology is considered to be in a key role in several envisioned HST use cases, such as mission-critical autonomous train systems.
Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology using light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been gaining increasing attention in recent years as it is appealing for a wide range of applications such as indoor positioning. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been applied to indoor wireless optical communications in order to mitigate the effect of multipath distortion of the optical channel as well as increasing data rate. In this paper, we investigate the indoor positioning accuracy of optical based OFDM techniques used in VLC systems. A positioning algorithm based on power attenuation is used to estimate the receiver coordinates. We further calculate the positioning errors in all the locations of a room and compare them with those of single carrier modulation scheme, i.e., on-off keying (OOK) modulation. We demonstrate that OFDM positioning system outperforms its conventional counterpart.
In many sensing applications, typically radio signals are emitted by a radar and from the bounced reflections of the obstacles, inference about the environment is made. Even though radars can be used to sense the landscapes around the user-equipment (UE) such as whether UE is in the forested region, inside buildings, etc., it is not suitable in many wireless applications as many UEs does not have radars in them. Using radar will also increase the cost and power requirements on the UEs in applications requiring sensing of the landscapes. In this paper, we provide a mechanism where basestation (BS) is able to sense the UEs landscape without the use of a radar. We propose an artificial intelligence (AI) based approach with suitable choice of the features derived from the wireless channel to infer the landscape of the UEs. Results for the proposed methods when applied to practical environments such as London city scenario yields a precision score of more than 95 percent.
In typical wireless cellular systems, the handover mechanism involves reassigning an ongoing session handled by one cell into another. In order to support increased capacity requirement and to enable newer use cases, the next generation wireless systems will have a very dense deployment with advanced beam-forming capability. In such systems, providing a better mobility along with enhanced throughput performance requires an improved handover strategy. In this paper, we will detail a novel method for handover optimization in a 5G cellular network using reinforcement learning (RL). In contrast to the conventional method, we propose to control the handovers between base-stations (BSs) using a centralized RL agent. This agent handles the radio measurement reports from the UEs and choose appropriate handover actions in accordance with the RL framework to maximize a long-term utility. We show that the handover mechanism can be posed as a contextual multi-armed bandit problem and solve it using Q-learning method. We analyze the performance of the methods using different propagation and deployment environment and compare the results with the state-of-the-art algorithms. Results indicate a link-beam performance gain of about 0.3 to 0.7 dB for practical propagation environments.
We analyze a millimeter wave network, deployed along the streets of a city, in terms of positioning and downlink data-rate performance, respectively. First, we present a transmission scheme where the base stations provide jointly positioning and data-communication functionalities. Accordingly, we study the trade-off between the localization and the data rate performance based on theoretical bounds. Then, we obtain an upper bound on the probability of beam misalignment based on the derived localization error bound. Finally, we prescribe the network operator a scheme to select the beamwidth and the power splitting factor between the localization and communication functions to address different quality of service requirements, while limiting cellular outage.
Providing high-capacity radio connectivity for high-speed trains (HSTs) is one of the most important use cases of emerging 5G New Radio (NR) networks. In this article, we show that 5G NR technology can also facilitate high-accuracy continuous localization and tracking of HSTs. Furthermore, we describe and demonstrate how the NR network can utilize the continuous location information for efficient beam-management and beamforming, as well as for downlink Doppler precompensation in the single-frequency network context. Additionally, with particular focus on millimeter wave networks, novel concepts for low-latency intercarrier interference (ICI) estimation and compensation, due to residual Doppler and oscillator phase noise, are described and demonstrated. The provided numerical results at 30 GHz operating band show that sub-meter positioning and sub-degree beam-direction accuracies can be obtained with very high probabilities in the order of 95-99%. The results also show that the described Doppler precompensation and ICI estimation and cancellation methods substantially improve the throughput of the single-frequency HST network.
