We introduce a hybrid (discrete--continuous) safety controller which enforces strict state and input constraints on a system---but only acts when necessary, preserving transparent operation of the original system within some safe region of the state space. We define this space using a Min-Quadratic Barrier function, which we construct along the equilibrium manifold using the Lyapunov functions which result from linear matrix inequality controller synthesis for locally valid uncertain linearizations. We also introduce the concept of a barrier pair, which makes it easy to extend the approach to include trajectory-based augmentations to the safe region, in the style of LQR-Trees. We demonstrate our controller and barrier pair synthesis method in simulation-based examples.

In this paper, we consider the problem of verifying safety constraint satisfaction for single-input single-output systems with uncertain transfer function coefficients. We propose a new type of barrier function based on a vector norm. This type of barrier function has a measurable upper bound without full state availability. An identifier-based estimator allows an exact bound for the uncertainty-based component of the barrier function estimate. Assuming that the system is safe initially allows an exponentially decreasing bound on the error due to the estimator transient. Barrier function and estimator synthesis is proposed as two convex sub-problems, exploiting linear matrix inequalities. The barrier function controller combination is then used to construct a safety backup controller. And we demonstrate the system in a simulation of a 1 degree-of-freedom human-exoskeleton interaction.

This paper considers the problem of safety controller synthesis for systems equipped with sensor modalities that can provide preview information. We consider switched systems where switching mode is an external signal for which preview information is available. In particular, it is assumed that the sensors can notify the controller about an upcoming mode switch before the switch occurs. We propose preview automaton, a mathematical construct that captures both the preview information and the possible constraints on switching signals. Then, we study safety control synthesis problem with preview information. An algorithm that computes the maximal invariant set in a given mode-dependent safe set is developed. These ideas are demonstrated on two case studies from autonomous driving domain.
This article considers the stochastic optimal control of discrete-time linear systems subject to (possibly) unbounded stochastic disturbances, hard constraints on the manipulated variables, and joint chance constraints on the states. A tractable convex second-order cone program (SOCP) is derived for calculating the receding-horizon control law at each time step. Feedback is incorporated during prediction by parametrizing the control law as an affine function of the disturbances. Hard input constraints are guaranteed by saturating the disturbances that appear in the control law parametrization. The joint state chance constraints are conservatively approximated as a collection of individual chance constraints that are subsequently relaxed via the Cantelli-Chebyshev inequality. Feasibility of the SOCP is guaranteed by softening the approximated chance constraints using the exact penalty function method. Closed-loop stability in a stochastic sense is established by establishing that the states satisfy a geometric drift condition outside of a compact set such that their variance is bounded at all times. The SMPC approach is demonstrated using a continuous acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation process, which is used for production of high-value-added drop-in biofuels.

This paper addresses problems on the structural design of control systems taking explicitly into consideration the possible application to large-scale systems. We provide an efficient and unified framework to solve the following major minimization problems: (i) selection of the minimum number of manipulated/measured variables to achieve structural controllability/observability of the system, and (ii) selection of the minimum number of feedback interconnections between measured and manipulated variables such that the closed-loop system has no structurally fixed modes. Contrary to what would be expected, we show that it is possible to obtain a global solution for each of the aforementioned minimization problems using polynomial complexity algorithms in the number of the state variables of the system. In addition, we provide several new graph-theoretic characterizations of structural systems concepts, which, in turn, enable us to characterize all possible solutions to the above problems.

We present a novel class of nonlinear controllers that interpolates among differently behaving linear controllers as a case study for recently proposed Linear and Nonlinear System Level Synthesis framework. The structure of the nonlinear controller allows for simultaneously satisfying performance and safety objectives defined for small- and large-disturbance regimes. The proposed controller is distributed, handles delays, sparse actuation, and localizes disturbances. We show our nonlinear controller always outperforms its linear counterpart for constrained LQR problems. We further demonstrate the anti-windup property of an augmented control strategy based on the proposed controller for saturated systems via simulation.
