Carbene-Metal-Amide light-emitting diodes have recently shown internal quantum efficiencies approaching 100%, and there has been substantial debate concerning the cause of their exceptionally high efficiency. Here we present a theoretical description of CMAs, showing how a simple three-atom model can predict the form of the HOMO and LUMO, determine the polarization of transitions and the feasibility of spin-orbit coupling, as well as the qualitative dependence of excited state energies and oscillator strength on the twist angle. These results clarify many of the claims concerning CMAs and pave the way for the design of more efficient devices.

Carbene-metal-amide type photoemitters based on CF$_3$-substituted carbazolate ligands show sky-blue to deep-blue photoluminescence from charge-transfer excited states. They are suitable for incorporation into organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by thermal vapour deposition techniques, either embedded within a high-triplet-energy host, or used host-free. We report high-efficiency OLEDs with emission ranging from yellow to blue (Commission Internationale de lEclairage (CIE) coordinates from [0.35, 0.53] to [0.17, 0.17]). The latter show a peak electroluminescence external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 20.9 $%$ in a polar host. We observe that the relative energies of CT and $^{3}$LE states influence the performance of deep-blue emission from carbene-metal-amide materials. We report prototype host-free blue devices with peak external quantum efficiency of 17.3 $%$, which maintain high performance at brightness levels of 100 cd m$^{-2}$.
We consider several aspects of high-order harmonic generation in solids: the effects of elastic and inelastic scattering; varying pulse characteristics; and inclusion of material-specific parameters through a realistic band structure. We reproduce many observed characteristics of high harmonic generation experiments in solids including the formation of only odd harmonics in inversion-symmetric materials, and the nonlinear formation of high harmonics with increasing field. We find that the harmonic spectra are fairly robust against elastic and inelastic scattering. Furthermore, we find that the pulse characteristics play an important role in determining the harmonic spectra.
Eumelanin is regarded to be an attractive candidate material for biomedical applications. Despite many theoretical studies exploring the structure of eumelanin, an exact mapping of the energetic landscape of the very large phase space of eumelanin is still elusive. In this work, we implement a piecewise Ising Model to predict formation enthalpies of Eumelanin single and double tetramers, and demonstrate its superior predictive and generalizable capabilities. We believe this model will prove very useful in theoretically characterizing the many unique properties attributed to its disorder. The modular nature of the predictive Ising model built up in this work is well-suited for analysis and characterization of a larger phase space of eumelanin polymers, including hexamers and octomers, as well as larger stacked structures, such as potential triple and quadruple eumelanin tetramers. Absorbance data can be incorporated with population-wide predictions of polymer abundance to produce weighted-average predictions of broadband absorbance of bulk eumelanin.
We present a novel hybrid quantum/classical (QM/MM) approach to the calculation of charged excitations in molecular solids based on the many-body Greens function $GW$ formalism. Molecules described at the $GW$ level are embedded into the crystalline environment modeled with an accurate classical polarizable scheme. This allows the calculation of electron addition and removal energies in the bulk and at crystal surfaces where charged excitations are probed in photoelectron experiments. By considering the paradigmatic case of pentacene and perfluoropentacene crystals, we discuss the different contributions from intermolecular interactions to electronic energy levels, distinguishing between polarization, which is accounted for combining quantum and classical polarizabilities, and crystal field effects, that can impact energy levels by up to $pm0.6$ eV. After introducing band dispersion, we achieve quantitative agreement (within 0.2 eV) on the ionization potential and electron affinity measured at pentacene and perfluoropentacene crystal surfaces characterized by standing molecules.
Due to its exceptional lithium storage capacity silicon is considered as a promising candidate for anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In the present work we demonstrate that methods of the soft X-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) can be used as a powerful tool for the comprehensive analysis of the electronic and structural properties of lithium silicides Li$_{x}$Si forming in LIBs anode upon Si lithiation. On the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations it is shown that coordination of Si atoms in Li$_{x}$Si decreases with increase in Li concentration both for the crystalline and amorphous phases. In amorphous a-Li$_{x}$Si alloys Si tends to cluster forming Si-Si covalent bonds even at the high lithium concentration. It is demonstrated that the Si-L$_{2,3}$ emission bands of the crystalline and amorphous Li$_{x}$Si alloys show different spectral dependencies reflecting the process of disintegration of Si-Si network into Si clusters and chains of the different sizes upon Si lithiation. The Si-L$_{2,3}$ emission band of Li$_{x}$Si alloys become narrower and shifts towards higher energies with an increase in Li concentration. The shape of the emission band depends on the relative contribution of the X-ray radiation from the Si atoms having different coordination. This feature of the Si-L$_{2,3}$ spectra of Li$_{x}$Si alloys can be used for the detailed analysis of the Si lithiation process and LIBs anode structure identification.
