Battery-like supercapacitors feature high power and energy densities as well as long-term capacitance retention. The utilized capacitor electrodes are thus better to have large surface areas, high conductivity, high stability, and importantly be of binder free. Herein, vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) coated boron-doped diamonds (BDD) are employed as the capacitor electrodes to construct battery-like supercapacitors. Grown via a thermal chemical vapor deposition technique, these CNFs/BDD hybrid films are binder free and own porous structures, resulting in large surface areas. Meanwhile, the containment of graphene layers and copper metal catalysts inside CNFs/BDD leads to their high conductivity. Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) and pseudocapacitors (PCs) are then constructed in the inert electrolyte (1.0 M H2SO4 solution) and in the redox-active electrolyte (1.0 M Na2SO4 + 0.05 M Fe(CN)63-/4-), respectively. For assembled two-electrode symmetrical supercapacitor devices, the capacitances of EDLC and PC devices reach 30 and 48 mF cm-2 at 10 mV s-1, respectively. They remain constant even after 10 000 cycles. The power densities are 27.3 kW kg-1 and 25.3 kW kg-1 for EDLC and PC devices, together with their energy densities of 22.9 Wh kg-1 and 44.1 Wh kg-1, respectively. The performance of formed EDLC and PC devices is comparable to market-available batteries. Therefore, the vertically aligned CNFs/BDD hybrid film is a suitable capacitor electrode material to construct high-performance battery-like and industry-orientated supercapacitors for flexible power devices.

Polymeric membranes, including Polysulfone (PSf) membranes, are routinely used for water treatment. It is known for quite some time that water permeability of above membranes can be improved if one incorporates carbon nanotubes (single-walled, SWCNTs or multi-walled, MWCNTs) in to the membrane and aligns them in direction of flow of water. This paper reports a method of synthesizing polymeric membranes having vertically aligned hollow CNTs embedded in them. This involves mixing of nanomagnetic particles in the dope solution and casting of membrane in presence of moderate magnetic fields. A semi-automatic membrane casting machine which allows casting of membrane in presence magnetic field was designed and fabricated. PSf nanocomposite membranes, having vertically aligned MWCNTSs, were synthesized using above machine. The effect of magnetic field and the exposure time on the water permeation of above membranes was studied. It was seen that water permeability of membrane increases by a factor of 4 when the magnetic field is increased from 0 to 1500 Gauss. There was additional 40% increase in water permeability, when the time for which film was exposed to magnetic field was increased from 5 sec. to 10 sec.
Cerium oxide nanoparticles have been shown to mimic oxidoreductase enzymes by catalyzing the decomposition of organic substrates and reactive oxygen species. This mimicry can be found in superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxides, harmful molecules produced in oxidative stress asso-ciated diseases. Despite the fact that nanoparticle functionalization is mandatory in the context of nanomedicine, the influence of polymer coatings on their enzyme-like catalytic activity is poorly understood. In this work, six polymer coated cerium oxide nanoparticles are prepared by associa-tion of 7.8 nm cerium oxide cores with two poly(sodium acrylate) and four poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) grafted copolymers with different terminal or anchoring end groups, such as phosphonic acids. The superoxide dismutase-, catalase-, peroxidase- and oxidase-like catalytic activities of the coated nanoparticles were systematically studied. It is shown that the polymer coatings do not af-fect the superoxide dismutase-like, impair the catalase-like and oxidase-like and surprisingly im-proves peroxidase-like catalytic activities of cerium oxide nanoparticles. It is also demonstrated that the particles coated with the PEG-grafted copolymers perform better than the poly(acrylic acid) coated ones as oxidoreductase-like enzymes, a result that confirms the benefit of having phosphon-ic acids as anchoring groups at the particle surface.

Microtribological properties of vertically-aligned carbon-nanotube (VACNT) films have been studied. Adhesion forces were obtained by measuring force-displacement curves. Friction experiments were conducted in reciprocating sliding configurations. Effects of tip radius, applied force, scan speed, and relative humidity were investigated. A model of the friction of VACNT film is discussed on the basis of in-situ tribological experiments inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
For the SwissFEL Free Electron Laser project at the Paul Scherrer Institute, a pulsed High Gradient (HG) electron gun was used to study low emittance electron sources. Different metals and surface treatments for the cathode and anode were studied for their HG suitability. Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coatings are found to perform exceptionally well for vacuum gap insulation. A set of DLC coated electrodes with different coating parameters were tested for both vacuum breakdown and photo electron emission. Surface electric fields over 250MV/m (350 - 400kV, pulsed) were achieved without breakdown. From the same surface, it was possible to photo-emit an electron beam at gradients up to 150MV/m. The test setup and the experimental results are presented

Solid state battery technology has recently garnered considerable interest from companies including Toyota, BMW, Dyson, and others. The primary driver behind the commercialization of solid state batteries (SSBs) is to enable the use of lithium metal as the anode, as opposed to the currently used carbon anode, which would result in ~20% energy density improvement. However, no reported solid state battery to date meets all of the performance metrics of state of the art liquid electrolyte lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and indeed several solid state electrolyte (SSE) technologies may never reach parity with current LIBs. We begin with a review of state of the art LIBs, including their current performance characteristics, commercial trends in cost, and future possibilities. We then discuss current SSB research by focusing on three classes of solid state electrolytes: Sulfides, Polymers, and Oxides. We discuss recent and ongoing commercialization attempts in the SSB field. Finally, we conclude with our perspective and timeline for the future of commercial batteries.
