As a guiding example, the diffraction measure of a random local mixture of the two classic Fibonacci substitutions is determined and reanalysed via self-similar measures of Hutchinson type, defined by a finite family of contractions. Our revised approach yields explicit formulas for the pure point and the absolutely continuous parts, as well as a proof for the absence of singular continuous components. This approach is then extended to the family of random noble means substitutions and, as an example with an underlying 2-adic structure, to a locally randomised version of the period doubling chain. As a first step towards a more general approach, we interpret our findings in terms of a disintegration over the Kronecker factor, which is the maximal equicontinuous factor of a covering model set.
Any infinite sequence of substitutions with the same matrix of the Pisot type defines a symbolic dynamical system which is minimal. We prove that, to any such sequence, we can associate a compact set (Rauzy fractal) by projection of the stepped line associated with an element of the symbolic system on the contracting space of the matrix. We show that this Rauzy fractal depends continuously on the sequence of substitutions, and investigate some of its properties; in some cases, this construction gives a geometric model for the symbolic dynamical system.
We consider an independently identically distributed random dynamical system generated by finitely many, non-uniformly expanding Markov interval maps with a finite number of branches. Assuming a topologically mixing condition and the uniqueness of the equilibrium state of product form, we establish an almost-sure weighted equidistribution of cycles with respect to a natural stationary measure, as the periods of the cycles tend to infinity. This result is an analogue of Bowens theorem on periodic orbits of topologically mixing Axiom A diffeomorphisms in random setup. We also prove averaging results over all samples, as well as another samplewise result. We apply our result to the random $beta$-expansion of real numbers, and obtain a new formula for the mean relative frequencies of digits in the series expansion.
We show that the Mahler measure of every Borwein polynomial -- a polynomial with coefficients in $ {-1,0,1 }$ having non-zero constant term -- can be expressed as a maximal Lyapunov exponent of a matrix cocycle that arises in the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. In this way, Lehmers problem for height-one polynomials having minimal Mahler measure becomes equivalent to a natural question from the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. This supports another connection between Mahler measures and dynamics, beyond the well-known appearance of Mahler measures as entropies in algebraic dynamics.
In this paper, we deal with reversing and extended symmetries of shifts generated by bijective substitutions. We provide equivalent conditions for a permutation on the alphabet to generate a reversing/extended symmetry, and algorithms how to check them. Moreover, we show that, for any finite group $G$ and any subgroup $P$ of the $d$-dimensional hyperoctahedral group, there is a bijective substitution which generates an aperiodic hull with symmetry group $mathbb{Z}^{d}times G$ and extended symmetry group $(mathbb{Z}^{d} rtimes P)times G$.
We study the time evolution of quenched random-mass Dirac fermions in one dimension by quantum lattice Boltzmann simulations. For nonzero noise strength, the diffusion of an initial wave packet stops after a finite time interval, reminiscent of Anderson localization. However, instead of exponential localization we find algebraically decaying tails in the disorder-averaged density distribution. These qualitatively match $propto x^{-3/2}$ decay, which has been predicted by analytic calculations based on zero-energy solutions of the Dirac equation.
