We show that the Mahler measure of every Borwein polynomial -- a polynomial with coefficients in $ {-1,0,1 }$ having non-zero constant term -- can be expressed as a maximal Lyapunov exponent of a matrix cocycle that arises in the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. In this way, Lehmers problem for height-one polynomials having minimal Mahler measure becomes equivalent to a natural question from the spectral theory of binary constant-length substitutions. This supports another connection between Mahler measures and dynamics, beyond the well-known appearance of Mahler measures as entropies in algebraic dynamics.

Jonathan M. Borwein (1951-2016) was a prolific mathematician whose career spanned several countries (UK, Canada, USA, Australia) and whose many interests included analysis, optimisation, number theory, special functions, experimental mathematics, mathematical finance, mathematical education, and visualisation. We describe his life and legacy, and give an annotated bibliography of some of his most significant books and papers.
We present an infinite family of Borwein type $+ - - $ conjectures. The expressions in the conjecture are related to multiple basic hypergeometric series with Macdonald polynomial argument.

This paper is devoted to the study of the analytic properties of Mahler systems at 0. We give an effective characterisation of Mahler systems that are regular singular at 0, that is, systems which are equivalent to constant ones. Similar characterisations already exist for differential and (q-)difference systems but they do not apply in the Mahler case. This work fill in the gap by giving an algorithm which decides whether or not a Mahler system is regular singular at 0.
In this paper, we deal with reversing and extended symmetries of shifts generated by bijective substitutions. We provide equivalent conditions for a permutation on the alphabet to generate a reversing/extended symmetry, and algorithms how to check them. Moreover, we show that, for any finite group $G$ and any subgroup $P$ of the $d$-dimensional hyperoctahedral group, there is a bijective substitution which generates an aperiodic hull with symmetry group $mathbb{Z}^{d}times G$ and extended symmetry group $(mathbb{Z}^{d} rtimes P)times G$.

We solve the boson normal ordering problem for (q(a*)a + v(a*))^n with arbitrary functions q and v and integer n, where a and a* are boson annihilation and creation operators, satisfying [a,a*]=1. This leads to exponential operators generalizing the shift operator and we show that their action can be expressed in terms of substitutions. Our solution is naturally related through the coherent state representation to the exponential generating functions of Sheffer-type polynomials. This in turn opens a vast arena of combinatorial methodology which is applied to boson normal ordering and illustrated by a few examples.
