We develop the realistic minimal electronic model for recently discovered BiS$_2$ superconductors including the spin-orbit coupling based on a first-principles band structure calculations. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, characteristic for the Bi-based systems, the tight-binding low-energy model necessarily includes $p_x$, $p_y$, and $p_z$ orbitals. We analyze a potential Cooper-pairing instability from purely repulsive interaction for the moderate electronic correlations using the so-called leading angular harmonics approximation (LAHA). For small and intermediate doping concentrations we find the dominant instabilities to be $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave, and $s_{pm}$-wave symmetries, respectively. At the same time, in the absence of the sizable spin fluctuations the intra and interband Coulomb repulsion are of the same strength, which yields the strongly anisotropic behaviour of the superconducting gaps on the Fermi surface in agreement with recent ARPES findings. In addition, we find that the Fermi surface topology for BiS$_2$ layered systems at large electron doping can resembles the doped iron-based pnictide superconductors with electron and hole Fermi surfaces with sufficient nesting between them. This could provide further boost to increase $T_c$ in these systems.

We study the spin resonance peak in recently discovered iron-based superconductors. The resonance peak observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments agrees well with predicted results for the extended $s$-wave ($s_pm$) gap symmetry. Recent neutron scattering measurements show that there is a disparity between longitudinal and transverse components of the dynamical spin susceptibility. Such breaking of the spin-rotational invariance in the spin-liquid phase can occur due to spin-orbit coupling. We study the role of the spin-orbit interaction in the multiorbital model for Fe-pnictides and show how it affects the spin resonance feature.
The effects of spin independent hybridization potential and spin orbit coupling on two band superconductor with equal time s-wave inter band pairing order parameter is investigated theoretically. To study symmetry classes in two band superconductors the Gorkov equations are solved analytically. By defining spin singlet and spin triplet s wave order parameter due to two band degree of freedom the symmetry classes of Cooper pair are studied. For spin singlet case it is shown that spin independent hybridization generates Cooper pair belongs to even frequency spin singlet even momentum even band parity (ESEE) symmetry class for both intraband and interband pairing correlations. For spin triplet order parameter, intraband pairing correlation generates odd frequency spin triplet even momentum even band parity (OTEE) symmetry class whereas, interband pairing correlation generates even frequency spin triplet even momentum odd band parity ETEO) class. For the spin singlet, spin orbit coupling generates pairing correlation that belongs to odd frequency spin singlet odd momentum even band parity (OSOE) symmetry class and even frequency spin singlet even momentum even band parity (ESEE) for intraband and interband pairing correlation respectively. In the spin triplet case for itraband and interband correlation, spin orbit coupling generates even-frequency spin triplet odd momentum even band parity (ETOE) and even frequency spin triplet even momentum odd band parity (ETEO) respectively.
Superconductivity was first observed more than a century ago, but the search for new superconducting materials remains a challenge. The Cooper pairs in superconductors are ideal embodiments of quantum entanglement. Thus, novel superconductors can be critical for both learning about electronic systems in condensed matter and for possible application in future quantum technologies. Here two previously unreported materials, NbIr$_2$B$_2$ and TaIr$_2$B$_2$, are presented with superconducting transitions at 7.2 and 5.2 K, respectively. They display a unique noncentrosymmetric crystal structure, and for both compounds the magnetic field that destroys the superconductivity at 0 K exceeds one of the fundamental characteristics of conventional superconductors (the Pauli limit), suggesting that the superconductivity may be unconventional. Supporting this experimentally based deduction, first-principle calculations show a spin split Fermi surface due to the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. These materials may thus provide an excellent platform for the study of non-BCS superconductivity in intermetallic compounds.

Based on an effective two-band model and using the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approach, we explore spin fluctuations and unconventional superconducting pairing in Fe-based layer superconductors. It is elaborated that one type of interband antiferromagnetic (AF) spin fluctuation stems from the interband Coulomb repulsion, while the other type of intraband AF spin fluctuation originates from the intraband Coulomb repulsion. Due to the Fermi-surface topology, a spin-singlet extended s-wave superconducting state is more favorable than the nodal $d_{XY}$-wave state if the interband AF spin fluctuation is more significant than the intraband one, otherwise vice versa. It is also revealed that the effective interband coupling plays an important role in the intraband pairings, which is a distinct feature of the present two-band system.
Recent angle-resolved spectroscopy in BiS$_2$-based superconductors has indicated that the superconducting gap amplitude possesses remarkable anisotropy and/or a sign change on a small Fermi pocket around $X$ point. It implies a possibility of an unconventional pairing state. Here we study the gap anisotropy in superconductivity mediated by inherent charge/quadrupole fluctuations in an extended Hubbard model, which includes inter-site interaction between Bi and S atoms. The first-principles downfolded band structure is composed of Bi $6p_x/p_y$ and S $3p_x/p_y$ orbitals on a BiS$_2$ single layer. Evaluating the linearized gap equation, we find that the ferroic charge/quadrupole fluctuation driven by the inter-site interaction leads to a fully-gapped $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing state, in which the gap amplitude has sizable anisotropy on the Fermi surface.
