We present the results of comparative study of amplitude calibrations for East-Asia VLBI Network (EAVN) at 22 and 43 GHz using two different methods of an a-priori and a template spectrum, particularly on lower declination sources. Using observational data sets of early EAVN observations, we investigated the elevation-dependence of the gain values at seven stations of the KaVA (KVN and VERA Array) and three additional telescopes in Japan (Takahagi 32m, Yamaguchi 32m and Nobeyama 45m). By comparing the independently obtained gain values based on these two methods, we found that the gain values from each method were consistent within 10% at elevations higher than 10 degree. We also found that the total flux densities of two images produced from the different amplitude calibrations were in agreement within 10% at both 22 and 43 GHz. By using the template spectrum method, furthermore, the additional radio telescopes can participate in the KaVA (i.e. EAVN) so that it can give a notable sensitivity increase. Therefore, our results will constrain the detailed conditions to reliably measure the VLBI amplitude using EAVN and give a potential to extend possible telescopes comprising EAVN.

Korean VLBI Network (KVN) is the first dedicated mm-wavelength VLBI Network in East Asia and will be available from the middle of 2008. KVN consists of three stations and has the maximum observation frequency of 129 GHz with the maximum baseline length of 480 km. KVN has unique characteristics in the multifrequency, simultaneous observing system. By taking advantage of this we are considering various science topics, including not only maser emitting regions and young stellar objects in our galaxy, but also extragalactic objects. Construction of the first site is in progress. We are concurrently developing components, including receivers, data acquisition systems, and a correlator, and also arranging the international collaboration.

The very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique offers angular resolutions superior to any other instruments at other wavelengths, enabling unique science applications of high-resolution imaging of radio sources and high-precision astrometry. The East Asia VLBI Network (EAVN) is a collaborative effort in the East Asian region. The EAVN currently consists of 21 telescopes with diverse equipment configurations and frequency setups, allowing flexible subarrays for specific science projects. The EAVN provides the highest resolution of 0.5 mas at 22 GHz, allowing the fine imaging of jets in active galactic nuclei, high-accuracy astrometry of masers and pulsars, and precise spacecraft positioning. The soon-to-be-operational Five-hundredmeter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) will open a new era for the EAVN. This state-of-the-art VLBI array also provides easy access to and crucial training for the burgeoning Asian astronomical community. This Perspective summarizes the status, capabilities and prospects of the EAVN.
Nuclear astrophysics is an interdisciplinary research field of nuclear physics and astrophysics, seeking for the answer to a question, how to understand the evolution of the Universe with the nuclear processes which we learn. We review the research activities of nuclear astrophysics in east and southeast Asia which includes astronomy, experimental and theoretical nuclear physics and astrophysics. Several hot topics such as the Li problems, critical nuclear reactions and properties in stars, properties of dense matter, r-process nucleosynthesis and $ u$-process nucleosynthesis are chosen and discussed in further details. Some future Asian facilities, together with physics perspectives, are introduced.
We review several parallel tempering schemes and examine their main ingredients for accuracy and efficiency. The present study covers two selection methods of temperatures and several choices for the exchange of replicas, including a recent novel all-pair exchange method. We compare the resulting schemes and measure specific heat errors and efficiency using the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model. Our tests suggest that, an earlier proposal for using numbers of local moves related to the canonical correlation times is one of the key ingredients for increasing efficiency, and protocols using cluster algorithms are found to be very effective. Some of the protocols are also tested for efficiency and ground state production in 3D spin glass models where we find that, a simple nearest-neighbor approach using a local n-fold way algorithm is the most effective. Finally, we present evidence that the asymptotic limits of the ground state energy for the isotropic case and that of an anisotropic case of the 3D spin-glass model are very close and may even coincide.

Spectral analysis has been successfully applied at the detection of community structure of networks, respectively being based on the adjacency matrix, the standard Laplacian matrix, the normalized Laplacian matrix, the modularity matrix, the correlation matrix and several other variants of these matrices. However, the comparison between these spectral methods is less reported. More importantly, it is still unclear which matrix is more appropriate for the detection of community structure. This paper answers the question through evaluating the effectiveness of these five matrices against the benchmark networks with heterogeneous distributions of node degree and community size. Test results demonstrate that the normalized Laplacian matrix and the correlation matrix significantly outperform the other three matrices at identifying the community structure of networks. This indicates that it is crucial to take into account the heterogeneous distribution of node degree when using spectral analysis for the detection of community structure. In addition, to our surprise, the modularity matrix exhibits very similar performance to the adjacency matrix, which indicates that the modularity matrix does not gain desired benefits from using the configuration model as reference network with the consideration of the node degree heterogeneity.
