A programmable optical computer has remained an elusive concept. To construct a practical computing primitive equivalent to an electronic Boolean logic, one should find a nonlinear phenomenon that overcomes weaknesses present in many optical processing schemes. Ideally, the nonlinearity should provide a functionally complete set of logic operations, enable ultrafast all-optical programmability, and allow cascaded operations without a change in the operating wavelength or in the signal encoding format. Here we demonstrate a programmable logic gate using an injection-locked Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The gate program is switched between the AND and the OR operations at the rate of 1 GHz with Bit Error Ratio (BER) of 10e-6 without changes in the wavelength or in the signal encoding format. The scheme is based on nonlinearity of normalization operations, which can be used to construct any continuous complex function or operation, Boolean or otherwise.

Distance geometry problem belongs to a class of hard problems in classical computation that can be understood in terms of a set of inputs processed according to a given transformation, and for which the number of possible outcomes grows exponentially with the number of inputs. It is conjectured that quantum computing schemes can solve problems belonging to this class in a time that grows only at a polynomial rate with the number of inputs. While quantum computers are still being developed, there are some classical optics computation approaches that can perform very well for specific tasks. Here, we present an optical computing approach for the distance geometry problem in one dimension and show that it is very promising in the classical computing regime.
Optical computing has emerged as a promising candidate for real-time and parallel continuous data processing. Motivated by recent progresses in metamaterial-based analog computing [Science 343, 160 (2014)], we theoretically investigate realization of two-dimensional complex mathematical operations using rotated configurations, recently reported in [Opt. Lett. 39, 1278 (2014)]. Breaking the reflection symmetry, such configurations could realize both even and odd Greens functions associated with spatial operators. Based on such appealing theory and by using Brewster effect, we demonstrate realization of a first-order differentiator. Such efficient wave-based computation method not only circumvents the major potential drawbacks of metamaterials, but also offers the most compact possible device compared to the conventional bulky lens-based optical signal and data processors.
Higher repetition-rate optical pulse trains have been desired for various applications such as high-bit-rate optical communication, photonic analogue-to-digital conversion, and multi- photon imaging. Generation of multi GHz and higher repetition-rate optical pulse trains directly from mode-locked oscillators is often challenging. As an alternative, harmonic injection locking can be applied for extra-cavity repetition-rate multiplication (RRM). Here we have investigated the operation conditions and achievable performances of all-fibre, highly tunable harmonic injection locking-based pulse RRM. We show that, with slight tuning of slave laser length, highly tunable RRM is possible from a multiplication factor of 2 to >100. The resulting maximum SMSR is 41 dB when multiplied by a factor of two. We further characterize the noise properties of the multiplied signal in terms of phase noise and relative intensity noise. The resulting absolute rms timing jitter of the multiplied signal is in the range of 20 fs to 60 fs (10 kHz - 1 MHz) for different multiplication factors. With its high tunability, simple and robust all-fibre implementation, and low excess noise, the demonstrated RRM system may find diverse applications in microwave photonics, optical communications, photonic analogue-to-digital conversion, and clock distribution networks.
Spintronic nanodevices have ultrafast nonlinear dynamic and recurrence behaviors on a nanosecond scale that promises to enable spintronic reservoir computing (RC) system. Here two physical RC systems based on a single magnetic skyrmion memristor (MSM) and 24 spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) were proposed and modeled to process image classification task and nonlinear dynamic system prediction, respectively. Based on our micromagnetic simulation results on the nonlinear responses of MSM and STNO with current pulses stimulation, the handwritten digits recognition task domesticates that an RC system using one single MSM has the outstanding performance on image classification. In addition, the complex unknown nonlinear dynamic problems can also be well solved by a physical RC system consisted of 24 STNOs confirmed in a second-order nonlinear dynamic system and NARMA10 tasks. The capability of both high accuracy and fast information processing promises to enable one type of brain-like chip based on spintronics for various artificial intelligence tasks.
Microresonator-based optical frequency combs have been a topic of extensive research during the last few years. Several theoretical models for the comb generation have been proposed; however, they do not comprehensively address experimental results that show a variety of independent comb generation mechanisms. Here, we present frequency-domain experiments that illuminate the transition of microcombs into phase-locked states, which show characteristics of injection locking between ensembles of comb modes. In addition, we demonstrate the existence of equidistant optical frequency combs that are phase stable but with non-deterministic phase relationships between individual comb modes.
