From magnetic deflection experiments on isolated Co doped Nb clusters we made the interesting observation of some clusters being magnetic, while others appear to be non-magnetic. There are in principle two explanations for this behavior. Either the local moment at the Co site is completely quenched or it is screened by the delocalized electrons of the cluster, i.e. the Kondo effect. In order to reveal the physical origin, we conducted a combined theoretical and experimental investigation. First, we established the ground state geometry of the clusters by comparing the experimental vibrational spectra with those obtained from a density functional theory study. Then, we performed an analyses based on the Anderson impurity model. It appears that the non-magnetic clusters are due to a complete quenching of the local Co moment and not due to the Kondo effect. In addition, the magnetic behavior of the clusters can be understood from an inspection of their electronic structure. Here magnetism is favored when the effective hybridization around the chemical potential is small, while the absence of magnetism is signalled by a large effective hybridization around the chemical potential.

This letter reports on the magnetic properties of Ti1-xCoxO2 anatase phase nanopowders with different Co contents. It is shown that oxygen vacancies play a fundamental role in promoting the long-range ferromagnetic order in the material studied, in addition to the transition-metal doping. Furthermore, the results allow ruling out the premise of a strict connection between Co clustering and the ferromagnetism observed in the Co:TiO2 anatase system.

We have investigated the effect of Cd substitution on the archetypal heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeIn$_3$ via magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity measurements. The suppression of the Neel temperature, T$_{N}$, with Cd doping is more pronounced than with Sn. Nevertheless, a doping induced quantum critical point does not appear to be achievable in this system. The magnetic entropy at $T_N$ and the temperature of the maximum in resistivity are also systematically suppressed with Cd, while the effective moment and the Curie-Weiss temperature in the paramagnetic state are not affected. These results suggest that Cd locally disrupts the AFM order on its neighboring Ce moments, without affecting the valence of Ce. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the specific heat below $T_N$ is not consistent with 3D magnons in pure as well as in Cd-doped CeIn$_3$, a point that has been missed in previous investigations of CeIn$_3$ and that has bearing on the type of quantum criticality in this system.
Although La(2)Cu(1-x)Li(x)O(4) [Li-LCO] differs from La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) [Sr-LCO] in many ways (e.g., the absence of metallic transport, high-Tc superconductivity, and incommensurate antiferromagnetic correlations), it has been known that certain magnetic properties are remarkably similar. The present work establishes the detailed bulk magnetic phase diagram of Li-LCO (0 <= x <= 0.07), which is found to be nearly identical to that of lightly-doped Sr-LCO, and therefore extends the universality of the phase diagram to hole-doped but nonsuperconducting cuprates.
On the basis of the first principles simulation, the structure, formation enthalpy, and mechanical properties (elastic constant, bulk, and shear modulus and hardness) of five Nb-doped Ni systems are systematically studied. The calculated equilibrium volume increases with the Nb concentration increasing. The computational elastic constants and formation enthalpy indicate that all Nb-doped Ni systems are mechanically and thermodynamically stable in our research. The hardness of these systems also be predicted after the bulk modulus and shear modulus have been accurately calculated. The results show that the hardness increases with the Nb concentration increasing when the Nb concentration below 4.9%, beyond which the hardness will decrease within the scope of our study.
The electronic and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic doped manganites are investigated by means of model tight-binding and textit{ab initio} self-interaction corrected local spin density approximation calculations. It is found that the surface alone by breaking the cubic symmetry induces a difference in the occupation of the two $e_{g}$ orbitals at the surface. With textit{ab initio} calculations we found surface localisation of one orbital and hence a change in the Mn valency from four in the bulk to three at the sub-surface. Different surface or disordered interface induced localisation of the orbitals are considered too with respect to the nature and the strength of the magnetic exchange coupling between the surface/interface and the bulk-like region.
