We report a study on the thermal conductivity of CuFe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_2$ ($x =$ 0--0.12) single crystals at temperatures down to 0.3 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. CuFeO$_2$ is a well-known geometrically frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet and can be made to display multiferroicity either by applying magnetic field along the $c$ axis or by doping nonmagnetic impurities, accompanied with rich behaviors of magnetic phase transitions. The main experimental findings of this work are: (i) the thermal conductivities ($kappa_a$ and $kappa_c$) show drastic anomalies at temperature- or field-induced magnetic transitions; (ii) the low-$T$ $kappa(H)$ isotherms exhibit irreversibility in a broad region of magnetic fields; (iii) there are phonon scattering effect caused by magnetic fluctuations at very low temperatures. These results demonstrate strong spin-phonon coupling in this material and reveal the non-negligible magnetic fluctuations in the ground state of pure and Ga-doped samples.

Electrical transport and specific heat properties of Nd_{1-x}Pb_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals for 0.15 < x 0.5 have been studied in low temperature regime. The resistivity in the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) phase for x < 0.3 has an activated character. The dependence of the activation gap Delta on doping x has been determined and the critical concentration for the zero-temperature metal-insulator transition was determined as x_{c} ~ 0.33. For a metallic sample with x=0.42, a conventional electron-electron (e-e) scattering term proportional T^{2} is found in the low-temperature electrical resistivity, although the Kadowaki-Woods ratio is found to be much larger for this manganite than for a normal metal. For a metallic sample with x=0.5, a resistivity minimum is observed for x= 0.5. The effect is attributed to weak localization and can be described by a negative T^{1/2} weak-localization contribution to resistivity for a disordered three-dimensional electron system. The specific heat data have been fitted to contributions from free electrons (gamma), spin excitations (beta_{3/2}), lattice and a Schottky-like anomaly related to the rare-earth magnetism of the Nd ions. The value of gamma is larger than for normal metals, which is ascribed to magnetic ordering effects involving Nd. Also, the Schottky-like anomaly appears broadened and weakened suggesting inhomogeneous molecular fields at the Nd-sites.

We report an optimized chemical vapor transport method to grow single crystals of (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ where x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 & 1. Single crystals up to 4,mm,$times$,3,mm,$times$,200,$mu$m were obtained by this method. As-grown crystals characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, and powder x-ray diffraction measurements. The structural characterization shows that all crystals crystallize in monoclinic symmetry with the space group $C2/m$ (No. 12). We have further investigated the magnetic properties of this series of single crystals. The magnetic measurements of the all as-grown single crystals show long-range antiferromagnetic order along all crystallographic principal axes. Overall, the Neel temperature TN is non-monotonous, with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ doping the temperature of the antiferromagnetic phase transition first decreases from 80 K for pristine Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ (x = 0) up to x = 0.5, and then increases again to 155 K for pure Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ (x = 1). The magnetic anisotropy switches from out-of-plane to in-plane as a function of composition in (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ series. Transport studies under hydrostatic pressure on the parent compound Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ evidence an insulator-metal transition at an applied critical pressure of ~22 GPa
Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the maximum reachable concentration $x$ in the (Ga$_{1-x}$In$_x$)$_2$O$_3$ alloy in the low-$x$ regime (i.e. In solubility in $beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$) is around 10%. We then calculate the band alignment at the (100) interface between $beta$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ and (Ga$_{1-x}$In$_x$)$_2$O$_3$ at 12%, the nearest computationally treatable concentration. The alignment is strongly strain-dependent: it is of type-B staggered when the alloy is epitaxial on Ga$_2$O$_3$, and type-A straddling in a free-standing superlattice. Our results suggest a limited range of applicability of low-In-content GaInO alloys.
We report on the evidence for the multiband electronic transport in $alpha$-YbAlB$_{4}$ and $alpha$-Yb$_{0.81(2)}$Sr$_{0.19(3)}$AlB$_{4}$. Multiband transport reveals itself below 10 K in both compounds via Hall effect measurements, whereas anisotropic magnetic ground state sets in below 3 K in $alpha$-Yb$_{0.81(2)}$Sr$_{0.19(3)}$AlB$_{4}$. Our results show that Sr$^{2+}$ substitution enhances conductivity, but does not change the quasiparticle mass of bands induced by heavy fermion hybridization.
We have examined an isovalent Rh substitution effect on the transport properties of the thermoelectric oxide Ca$_3$Co$_{4}$O$_9$ using single-crystalline form. With increasing Rh content $x$, both the electrical resistivity and the Seebeck coefficient change systematically up to $x=0.6$ for Ca$_3$Co$_{4-x}$Rh$_{x}$O$_9$ samples. In the Fermi-liquid regime where the resistivity behaves as $rho=rho_0+AT^2$ around 120 K, the $A$ value decreases with increasing Rh content, indicating that the correlation effect is weakened by Rh $4d$ electrons with extended orbitals. We find that, in contrast to such a weak correlation effect observed in the resistivity of Rh-substituted samples, the low-temperature Seebeck coefficient is increased with increasing Rh content, which is explained with a possible enhancement of a pseudogap associated with the short-range order of spin density wave. In high-temperature range above room temperature, we show that the resistivity is largely suppressed by Rh substitution while the Seebeck coefficient becomes almost temperature-independent, leading to a significant improvement of the power factor in Rh-substituted samples. This result is also discussed in terms of the differences in the orbital size and the associated spin state between Co $3d$ and Rh $4d$ electrons.
