We introduce ParlAI (pronounced par-lay), an open-source software platform for dialog research implemented in Python, available at http://parl.ai. Its goal is to provide a unified framework for sharing, training and testing of dialog models, integration of Amazon Mechanical Turk for data collection, human evaluation, and online/reinforcement learning; and a repository of machine learning models for comparing with others models, and improving upon existing architectures. Over 20 tasks are supported in the first release, including popular datasets such as SQuAD, bAbI tasks, MCTest, WikiQA, QACNN, QADailyMail, CBT, bAbI Dialog, Ubuntu, OpenSubtitles and VQA. Several models are integrated, including neural models such as memory networks, seq2seq and attentive LSTMs.

Increasing concerns and regulations about data privacy, necessitate the study of privacy-preserving methods for natural language processing (NLP) applications. Federated learning (FL) provides promising methods for a large number of clients (i.e., personal devices or organizations) to collaboratively learn a shared global model to benefit all clients, while allowing users to keep their data locally. To facilitate FL research in NLP, we present the FedNLP, a research platform for federated learning in NLP. FedNLP supports various popular task formulations in NLP such as text classification, sequence tagging, question answering, seq2seq generation, and language modeling. We also implement an interface between Transformer language models (e.g., BERT) and FL methods (e.g., FedAvg, FedOpt, etc.) for distributed training. The evaluation protocol of this interface supports a comprehensive collection of non-IID partitioning strategies. Our preliminary experiments with FedNLP reveal that there exists a large performance gap between learning on decentralized and centralized datasets -- opening intriguing and exciting future research directions aimed at developing FL methods suited to NLP tasks.
We introduce jiant, an open source toolkit for conducting multitask and transfer learning experiments on English NLU tasks. jiant enables modular and configuration-driven experimentation with state-of-the-art models and implements a broad set of tasks for probing, transfer learning, and multitask training experiments. jiant implements over 50 NLU tasks, including all GLUE and SuperGLUE benchmark tasks. We demonstrate that jiant reproduces published performance on a variety of tasks and models, including BERT and RoBERTa. jiant is available at https://jiant.info.
We create a new task-oriented dialog platform (MEEP) where agents are given considerable freedom in terms of utterances and API calls, but are constrained to work within a push-button environment. We include facilities for collecting human-human dialog corpora, and for training automatic agents in an end-to-end fashion. We demonstrate MEEP with a dialog assistant that lets users specify trip destinations.
Traditionally, industry solutions for building a task-oriented dialog system have relied on helping dialog authors define rule-based dialog managers, represented as dialog flows. While dialog flows are intuitively interpretable and good for simple scenarios, they fall short of performance in terms of the flexibility needed to handle complex dialogs. On the other hand, purely machine-learned models can handle complex dialogs, but they are considered to be black boxes and require large amounts of training data. In this demonstration, we showcase Conversation Learner, a machine teaching tool for building dialog managers. It combines the best of both approaches by enabling dialog authors to create a dialog flow using familiar tools, converting the dialog flow into a parametric model (e.g., neural networks), and allowing dialog authors to improve the dialog manager (i.e., the parametric model) over time by leveraging user-system dialog logs as training data through a machine teaching interface.
Recent works have shown that generative data augmentation, where synthetic samples generated from deep generative models complement the training dataset, benefit NLP tasks. In this work, we extend this approach to the task of dialog state tracking for goal-oriented dialogs. Due to the inherent hierarchical structure of goal-oriented dialogs over utterances and related annotations, the deep generative model must be capable of capturing the coherence among different hierarchies and types of dialog features. We propose the Variational Hierarchical Dialog Autoencoder (VHDA) for modeling the complete aspects of goal-oriented dialogs, including linguistic features and underlying structured annotations, namely speaker information, dialog acts, and goals. The proposed architecture is designed to model each aspect of goal-oriented dialogs using inter-connected latent variables and learns to generate coherent goal-oriented dialogs from the latent spaces. To overcome training issues that arise from training complex variational models, we propose appropriate training strategies. Experiments on various dialog datasets show that our model improves the downstream dialog trackers robustness via generative data augmentation. We also discover additional benefits of our unified approach to modeling goal-oriented dialogs: dialog response generation and user simulation, where our model outperforms previous strong baselines.
