We study a complex plasma under microgravity conditions that is first stabilized with an oscillating electric field. Once the stabilization is stopped, the so-called heartbeat instability develops. We study how the kinetic energy spectrum changes during and after the onset of the instability and compare with the double cascade predicted by Kraichnan and Leith for two-dimensional turbulence. The onset of the instability manifests clearly in the ratio of the reduced rates of cascade of energy and enstrophy and in the power-law exponents of the energy spectra.

We present the first observation of instability in weakly magnetized, pressure dominated plasma Couette flow firmly in the Hall regime. Strong Hall currents couple to a low frequency electromagnetic mode that is driven by high-$beta$ ($>1$) pressure profiles. Spectroscopic measurements show heating (factor of 3) of the cold, unmagnetized ions via a resonant Landau damping process. A linear theory of this instability is derived that predicts positive growth rates at finite $beta$ and shows the stabilizing effect of very large $beta$, in line with observations.
Linear stability analysis of strongly coupled incompressible dusty plasma in presence of shear flow has been carried out using Generalized Hydrodynamical(GH) model. With the proper Galilean invariant GH model, a nonlocal eigenvalue analysis has been done using different velocity profiles. It is shown that the effect of elasticity enhances the growth rate of shear flow driven Kelvin- Helmholtz (KH) instability. The interplay between viscosity and elasticity not only enhances the growth rate but the spatial domain of the instability is also widened. The growth rate in various parameter space and the corresponding eigen functions are presented.

The two-fluid (ions and electrons) plasma Richtmyer-Meshkov instability of a cylindrical light/heavy density interface is numerically investigated without an initial magnetic field. Varying the Debye length scale, we examine the effects of the coupling between the electron and ion fluids. When the coupling becomes strong, the electrons are restricted to co-move with the ions and the resulting evolution is similar to the hydrodynamic neutral fluid case. The charge separation that occurs between the electrons and ions results in self-generated electromagnetic fields. We show that the Biermann battery effect dominates the generation of magnetic field when the coupling between the electrons and ions is weak. In addition to the Rayleigh-Tayler stabilization effect during flow deceleration, the interfaces are accelerated by the induced spatio-temporally varying Lorentz force. As a consequence, the perturbations develop into the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, leading to an enhancement of the perturbation amplitude compared with the hydrodynamic case.
We investigate the low-frequency wave mode associated with heavy particles and its instability in a collisional complex plasma with drifting ions. The effect of the ion drift on the sound velocity of this mode is discussed. The general condition of the instability is derived for subthermal ion drifts, taking into account strong coupling of the particle component. As a general tendency, strong coupling effects reduce the sound velocity and facilitate the occurrence of the ion drift instability. A wide parameter range is considered from the weakly collisional to strongly collisional regimes for the ion and particle components. The chosen plasma parameters are representative to the PK-4 experiment, currently operational on board the International Space Station.
The Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability is studied in a non-Newtonian dusty plasma with an experimentally verified model [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 98}, 145003 (2007)] of shear flow rate dependent viscosity. The shear flow profile used here is a parabolic type bounded flow. Both the shear thinning and shear thickening properties are investigated in compressible as well as incompressible limits using a linear stability analysis. Like the stabilizing effect of compressibility on the KH instability, the non-Newtonian effect in shear thickening regime could also suppress the instability but on the contrary, shear thinning property enhances it. A detailed study is reported on the role of non-Newtonian effect on KH instability with conventional dust fluid equations using standard eigenvalue analysis.
