We give necessary and sufficient conditions for moduli spaces of semistable chains on a curve to be irreducible and non-empty. This gives information on the irreducible components of the nilpotent cone of GL_n-Higgs bundles and the irreducible components of moduli of systems of Hodge bundles on curves. As we do not impose coprimality restrictions, we can apply this to prove connectedness for moduli spaces of U(p,q)-Higgs bundles.

A $mathrm{U}(p,q)$-Higgs bundle on a Riemann surface (twisted by a line bundle) consists of a pair of holomorphic vector bundles, together with a pair of (twisted) maps between them. Their moduli spaces depend on a real parameter $alpha$. In this paper we study wall crossing for the moduli spaces of $alpha$-polystable twisted $mathrm{U}(p,q)$-Higgs bundles. Our main result is that the moduli spaces are birational for a certain range of the parameter and we deduce irreducibility results using known results on Higgs bundles. Quiver bundles and the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence play an essential role.
We take another approach to Hitchins strategy of computing the cohomology of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles by localization with respect to the circle-action. Our computation is done in the dimensional completion of the Grothendieck ring of varieties and starts by describing the classes of moduli stacks of chains rather than their coarse moduli spaces. As an application we show that the n-torsion of the Jacobian acts trivially on the middle dimensional cohomology of the moduli space of twisted SL_n-Higgs-bundles of degree coprime to n and we give an explicit formula for the motive of the moduli space of Higgs bundles of rank 4 and odd degree. This provides new evidence for a conjecture of Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas. Along the way we find explicit recursion formulas for the motives of several types of moduli spaces of stable chains.
In order to obtain existence criteria for orthogonal instanton bundles on $mathbb{P}^n$, we provide a bijection between equivalence classes of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections and symmetric forms. Using such correspondence we are able to provide explicit examples of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections on $mathbb{P}^n$ and prove that every orthogonal instanton bundle with no global sections on $mathbb{P}^n$ and charge $cgeq 3$ has rank $rleq (n-1)c$. We also prove that when the rank $r$ of the bundles reaches the upper bound, $mathcal{M}_{mathbb{P}^n}^{mathcal{O}}(c,r)$, the coarse moduli space of orthogonal instanton bundles with no global sections on $mathbb{P}^n$, with charge $cgeq 3$ and rank $r$, is affine, reduced and irreducible. Last, we construct Kronecker modules to determine the splitting type of the bundles in $mathcal{M}_{mathbb{P}^n}^{mathcal{O}}(c,r)$, whenever is non-empty.

Let X be a compact Riemann surface together with a finite set of marked points. We use Morse theoretic techniques to compute the Betti numbers of the parabolic U(2,1)-Higgs bundles moduli spaces over X. We give examples for one marked point showing that the Poincare polynomials depend on the system of weights of the parabolic bundle.
Some connected components of a moduli space are mundane in the sense that they are distinguished only by obvious topological invariants or have no special characteristics. Others are more alluring and unusual either because they are not detected by primary invariants, or because they have special geometric significance, or both. In this paper we describe new examples of such `exotic components in moduli spaces of SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces or, equivalently, moduli spaces of surface group representations into the Lie group SO(p,q). Furthermore, we discuss how these exotic components are related to the notion of positive Anosov representations recently developed by Guichard and Wienhard. We also provide a complete count of the connected components of these moduli spaces (except for SO(2,q), with q> 3).
