Polystyrene-based phosphorene nanocomposites were prepared by a solvent blending procedure allowing the embedding of black phosphorus (BP) nanoflakes in the polymer matrix. Raman spectroscopy, X Ray Diffraction and TEM microscopy were employed to characterize the structural and the morphological characteristics of the achieved hybrids, with the aim to evaluate the dispersion level of black phosphorus layers. TGA, DSC analysis as well as thermal oxidation and photo-degradation techniques were employed to investigate the thermal- and the photo-stability of the samples. The collected results evidenced better thermal and photostability of both polymer matrix and dispersed layered phosphorus, suggesting really interesting polymer-nanofiller synergic effects ascribable to the presence and the good dispersion of the 2D-nanomaterial.

The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of elastic properties of polystyrene-based nanocomposites filled with different types of inclusions: small spherical particles (SiO2 and Al2O3), alumosilicates (montmorillonite, halloysite natural tubules and Mica) and carbon nanofillers (carbon black and multi-walled carbon nanotubes). Composites were fabricated by melt technology. The analysis of composite melts showed that the introduction of Montmorillonite, Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and Al2O3 particles provided an increase in melt viscosity by an average of 2 to 5 orders of magnitude over the pure polystyrene. Block samples of composites with different filler concentrations were prepared, and their linear and nonlinear elastic properties were studied. The introduction of more rigid particles led to a more profound increase in the elastic modulus of the composite, with the highest rise of about 80% obtained with carbon fillers. Carbon black particles provided also an enhanced strength at break of about 20% higher than that of pure polystyrene. The nonlinear elastic moduli of composites were shown to be more sensitive to addition of filler particles to the polymer matrix than the linear ones. The nonlinearity coefficient $beta$ comprising the combination of linear and nonlinear elastic moduli of a material demonstrated considerable changes correlating with changes of the Youngs modulus. The absolute value of $beta$ showed rise in 1.5-1.6 times in the CB- and HNT-containing composites as compared to that of pure PS. The changes in nonlinear elasticity of fabricated composites were compared with measurements of the parameters of bulk nonlinear strain waves in them. Variations of wave velocity and decay decrement correlated with observed enhancement of materials nonlinearity.

Interfaces remain one of the major issues in limiting the understanding and designing polymer nanocomposites due to their complexity and pivotal role in determining the ultimate composites properties. In this study, we take multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silicone rubber nanocomposites as a representative example, and have for the first time studied the correlation between high-frequency dielectric dispersion and static/dynamic interfacial characteristics. We have found that the interface together with other meso-structural parameters (volume fraction, dispersion, agglomeration) play decisive role in formulating the dielectric patterns. The calculation of the relaxation times affords the relative importance of interfacial polarization to dipolar polarization in resultant dielectric relaxation. Dielectric measurements coupled with cyclic loading further reveals the remarkable capability of dielectric frequency dispersion in capturing the evolution of interfacial properties, such as a particular interface reconstruction process occurred to the surfactant-modified samples. All these results demonstrate that high-frequency dielectric spectroscopy is instrumental to probing both static and dynamic meso-structural characteristics, especially effective for the composites with relative weak interfaces which remains a mission impossible for many other techniques. The insights provided here based on the analyses of dielectric frequency dispersion will pave the way for optimized design and precise engineering of meso-structure in polymer nanocomposites.
Plastic scintillator detectors are widely used in particle physics thanks to the very good particle identification, tracking capabilities and time resolution. However, new experimental challenges and the need for enhanced performance require the construction of detector geometries that are complicated using the current production techniques. In this article we propose a new production technique based on additive manufacturing that aims to 3D print polystyrene-based scintillator. The production process and the results of the scintillation light output measurement of the 3D-printed scintillator are reported.
Intermetallic clathrates are candidate materials for thermoelectric applications above room temperature. Here we explore whether their intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivities can be further reduced by nanostructuring and whether this can further enhance their thermoelectric performance.}{As bulk nanostructuring routes we studied melt spinning and ball milling. To optimize the compaction process and/or stabilize the nanostructure we varied the process parameters, used additives, and studied clathrate-based composites. Initial results on clathate nanowires as simpler model nanostructures are also presented.

Phosphorene is emerging as a promising 2D semiconducting material with a direct band gap and high carrier mobility. In this paper, we examine the role of the extrinsic point defects including surface adatoms in modifying the electronic properties of phosphorene using density functional theory. The surface adatoms considered are B, C, N, O and F with a [He] core electronic configuration. Our calculations show that B and C, with electronegativity close to P, prefer to break the sp3 bonds of phosphorene, and reside at the interstitial sites in the 2D lattice by forming sp2 bonds with the native atoms. On the other hand, N, O and F, which are more electronegative than P, prefer the surface sites by attracting the lone pairs of phosphorene. B, N and F adsorption will also introduce local magnetic moment to the lattice. Moreover, B, C, N and F adatoms will modify the band gap of phosphorene yielding metallic transverse tunneling characters. Oxygen does not modify the band gap of phosphorene, and a diode like tunneling behavior is observed. Our results therefore offer a possible route to tailor the electronic and magnetic properties of phosphorene by the adatom functionalization, and provide the physical insights of the environmental sensitivity of phosphorene, which will be helpful to experimentalists in evaluating the performance and aging effects of phosphorene-based electronic devices.
