The procedure commonly used in textbooks for determining the eigenvalues and eigenstates for a particle in an attractive Coulomb potential is not symmetric in the way the boundary conditions at $r=0$ and $r rightarrow infty$ are considered. We highlight this fact by solving a model for the Coulomb potential with a cutoff (representing the finite extent of the nucleus); in the limit that the cutoff is reduced to zero we recover the standard result, albeit in a non-standard way. This example is used to emphasize that a more consistent approach to solving the Coulomb problem in quantum mechanics requires an examination of the non-standard solution. The end result is, of course, the same.

It is demonstrated how quantum mechanics is generated by stochastic momentum kicks from the force carriers, transmitting the fundamental interactions between the point particles. The picture is consistent with quantum field theory and points out that the force carriers are the only quantum particles. Since the latter are waves in the coordinate space, they are responsible for the wavy character of quantum mechanics.

When compared to quantum mechanics, classical mechanics is often depicted in a specific metaphysical flavour: spatio-temporal realism or a Newtonian background is presented as an intrinsic fundamental classical presumption. However, the Hamiltonian formulation of classical analytical mechanics is based on abstract generalized coordinates and momenta: It is a mathematical rather than a philosophical framework. If the metaphysical assumptions ascribed to classical mechanics are dropped, then there exists a presentation in which little of the purported difference between quantum and classical mechanics remains. This presentation allows to derive the mathematics of relativistic quantum mechanics on the basis of a purely classical Hamiltonian phase space picture. It is shown that a spatio-temporal description is not a condition for but a consequence of objectivity. It requires no postulates. This is achieved by evading spatial notions and assuming nothing but time translation invariance.
We apply the ideas of effective field theory to nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. Utilizing an artificial boundary of ignorance as a calculational tool, we develop the effective theory using boundary conditions to encode short-ranged effects that are deliberately not modeled; thus, the boundary conditions play a role similar to the effective action in field theory. Unitarity is temporarily violated in this method, but is preserved on average. As a demonstration of this approach, we consider the Coulomb interaction and find that this effective quantum mechanics can predict the bound state energies to very high accuracy with a small number of fitting parameters. It is also shown to be equivalent to the theory of quantum defects, but derived here using an effective framework. The method respects electromagnetic gauge invariance and also can describe decays due to short-ranged interactions, such as those found in positronium. Effective quantum mechanics appears applicable for systems that admit analytic long-range descriptions, but whose short-ranged effects are not reliably or efficiently modeled. Potential applications of this approach include atomic and condensed matter systems, but it may also provide a useful perspective for the study of blackholes.

Can a simple microscopic model of space and time demonstrate Special Relativity as the macroscopic (aggregate) behavior of an ensemble ? The question will be investigated in three parts. First, it is shown that the Lorentz transformation formally stems from the First Relativity Postulate (FRP) {it alone} if space-time quantization is a fundamental law of physics which must be included as part of the Postulate. An important corollary, however, is that when measuring devices which carry the basic units of lengths and time (e.g. a clock ticking every time quantum) are `moving uniformly, they appear to be measuring with larger units. Secondly, such an apparent increase in the sizes of the quanta can be attributed to extra fluctuations associated with motion, which are precisely described in terms of a thermally agitated harmonic oscillator by using a temperature parameter. This provides a stringent constraint on the microscopic properties of flat space-time: it is an array of quantized oscillators. Thirdly, since the foregoing development would suggest that the space-time array of an accelerated frame cannot be in thermal equilibrium, (i.e. it will have a distribution of temperatures), the approach is applied to the case of acceleration by the field of {it any} point object, which corresponds to a temperature `spike in the array. It is shown that the outward transport of energy by phonon conduction implies an inverse-square law of force at low speeds, and the full Schwarzschild metric at high speeds. A prediction of the new theory is that when two inertial observers move too fast relative to each other, or when fields are too strong, anharmonic corrections will modify effects like time dilation, and will lead to asymmetries which implies that the FRP may not be sustainable in this extreme limit.
The Levi-Civita transformation is applied in the two-dimensional (2D) Dirac and Klein-Gordon (KG) equations with equal external scalar and vector potentials. The Coulomb and harmonic oscillator problems are connected via the Levi-Civita transformation. These connections lead to an approach to solve the Coulomb problems using the results of the harmonic oscillator potential in the above-mentioned relativistic systems.
