This paper presents results of the ongoing development of the Cloud Services Delivery Infrastructure (CSDI) that provides a basis for infrastructure centric cloud services provisioning, operation and management in multi-cloud multi-provider environment defined as a Zero Touch Provisioning, Operation and Management (ZTP/ZTPOM) model. The presented work refers to use cases from data intensive research that require high performance computation resources and large storage volumes that are typically distributed between datacenters often involving multiple cloud providers. Automation for large scale scientific (and industrial) applications should include provisioning of both inter-cloud network infrastructure and intra-cloud application resources. It should provide support for the complete application operation workflow together with the possible application infrastructure and resources changes that can occur during the application lifecycle. The authors investigate existing technologies for automation of the service provisioning and management processes aiming to cross-pollinate best practices from currently disconnected domains such as cloud based applications provisioning and multi-domain high-performance network provisioning. The paper refers to the previous and legacy research by authors, the Open Cloud eXchange (OCX), that has been proposed to address the last mile problem in cloud services delivery to campuses over trans-national backbone networks such as GEANT. OCX will serve as an integral component of the prospective ZTP infrastructure over the GEANT network. Another important component, the Marketplace, is defined for providing cloud services and applications discovery (in generally intercloud environment) and may also support additional services such as services composition and trust brokering for establishing customer-provider federations.

Container technologies have been evolving rapidly in the cloud-native era. Kubernetes, as a production-grade container orchestration platform, has been proven to be successful at managing containerized applications in on-premises datacenters. However, Kubernetes lacks sufficient multi-tenant supports by design, meaning in cloud environments, dedicated clusters are required to serve multiple users, i.e., tenants. This limitation significantly diminishes the benefits of cloud computing, and makes it difficult to build multi-tenant software as a service (SaaS) products using Kubernetes. In this paper, we propose Virtual-Cluster, a new multi-tenant framework that extends Kubernetes with adequate multi-tenant supports. Basically, VirtualCluster provides both control plane and data plane isolations while sharing the underlying compute resources among tenants. The new framework preserves the API compatibility by avoiding modifying the Kubernetes core components. Hence, it can be easily integrated with existing Kubernetes use cases. Our experimental results show that the overheads introduced by VirtualCluster, in terms of latency and throughput, is moderate.
The concept of fog computing is centered around providing computation resources at the edge of network, thereby reducing the latency and improving the quality of service. However, it is still desirable to investigate how and where at the edge of the network the computation capacity should be provisioned. To this end, we propose a hierarchical capacity provisioning scheme. In particular, we consider a two-tier network architecture consisting of shallow and deep cloudlets and explore the benefits of hierarchical capacity based on queueing analysis. Moreover, we explore two different network scenarios in which the network delay between the two tiers is negligible as well as the case that the deep cloudlet is located somewhere deeper in the network and thus the delay is significant. More importantly, we model the first network delay scenario with bufferless shallow cloudlets as well as the second scenario with finite-size buffer shallow cloudlets, and formulate an optimization problem for each model. We also use stochastic ordering to solve the optimization problem formulated for the first model and an upper bound based technique is proposed for the second model. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated via simulations in which we show the accuracy of the proposed upper bound technique as well as the queue length estimation approach for both randomly generated input and real trace data.

Wireless traffic attributable to machine learning (ML) inference workloads is increasing with the proliferation of applications and smart wireless devices leveraging ML inference. Owing to limited compute capabilities at these edge devices, achieving high inference accuracy often requires coordination with a remote compute node or cloud over the wireless cellular network. The accuracy of this distributed inference is, thus, impacted by the communication rate and reliability offered by the cellular network. In this paper, an analytical framework is proposed to characterize inference accuracy as a function of cellular network design. Using the developed framework, it is shown that cellular network should be provisioned with a minimum density of access points (APs) to guarantee a target inference accuracy, and the inference accuracy achievable at asymptotically high AP density is limited by the air-interface bandwidth. Furthermore, the minimum accuracy required of edge inference to deliver a target inference accuracy is shown to be inversely proportional to the density of APs and the bandwidth.
Mobile entities with wireless links are able to form a mobile ad-hoc network. Such an infrastructureless network does not have to be administrated. However, self-organizing principles have to be applied to deal with upcoming problems, e.g. information dissemination. These kinds of problems are not easy to tackle, requiring complex algorithms. Moreover, the usefulness of pure ad-hoc networks is arguably limited. Hence, enthusiasm for mobile ad-hoc networks, which could eliminate the need for any fixed infrastructure, has been damped. The goal is to overcome the limitations of pure ad-hoc networks by augmenting them with instant Internet access, e.g. via integration of UMTS respectively GSM links. However, this raises multiple questions at the technical as well as the organizational level. Motivated by characteristics of small-world networks that describe an efficient network even without central or organized design, this paper proposes to combine mobile ad-hoc networks and infrastructured networks to form hybrid wireless networks. One main objective is to investigate how this approach can reduce the costs of a permanent backbone link and providing in the same way the benefits of useful information from Internet connectivity or service providers. For the purpose of bridging between the different types of networks, an adequate middleware service is the focus of our investigation. This paper shows our first steps forward to this middleware by introducing the Injection Communication paradigm as principal concept.
Bolted is a new architecture for a bare metal cloud with the goal of providing security-sensitive customers of a cloud the same level of security and control that they can obtain in their own private data centers. It allows tenants to elastically allocate secure resources within a cloud while being protected from other previous, current, and future tenants of the cloud. The provisioning of a new server to a tenant isolates a bare metal server, only allowing it to communicate with other tenants servers once its critical firmware and software have been attested to the tenant. Tenants, rather than the provider, control the tradeoffs between security, price, and performance. A prototype demonstrates scalable end-to-end security with small overhead compared to a less secure alternative.
