We investigate the effects of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions on the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ kagome-Heisenberg model using the pseudo-fermion functional-renormalization-group (PFFRG) technique. In order to treat the off-diagonal nature of DM interactions, we develop an extended PFFRG scheme. We benchmark this approach in parameter regimes that have previously been studied with other methods and find good agreement of the magnetic phase diagram. Particularly, finite DM interactions are found to stabilize all types of non-collinear magnetic orders of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model ($mathbf{q}=0$, $sqrt{3}timessqrt{3}$, and cuboc orders) and shrink the extents of magnetically disordered phases. We discuss our results in the light of the mineral {it herbertsmithite} which has been experimentally predicted to host a quantum spin liquid at low temperatures. Our PFFRG data indicates that this material lies in close proximity to a quantum critical point. In parts of the experimentally relevant parameter regime for {it herbertsmithite}, the spin-correlation profile is found to be in good qualitative agreement with recent inelastic-neutron-scattering data.

A preponderance of evidence suggests that the ground state of the nearest-neighbor $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is a gapless spin liquid. Many candidate materials for the realization of this model possess in addition a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We study this system by tensor-network methods and deduce that a weak but finite DM interaction is required to destabilize the gapless spin-liquid state. The critical magnitude, $D_c/J simeq 0.012(2)$, lies well below the DM strength proposed in the kagome material herbertsmithite, indicating a need to reassess the apparent spin-liquid behavior reported in this system.
In the field of quantum magnetism, the advent of numerous spin-orbit assisted Mott insulating compounds, such as the family of Kitaev materials, has led to a growing interest in studying general spin models with non-diagonal interactions that do not retain the SU(2) invariance of the underlying spin degrees of freedom. However, the exchange frustration arising from these non-diagonal and often bond-directional interactions for two- and three-dimensional lattice geometries poses a serious challenge for numerical many-body simulation techniques. In this paper, we present an extended formulation of the pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group that is capable of capturing the physics of frustrated quantum magnets with generic (diagonal and off-diagonal) two-spin interaction terms. Based on a careful symmetry analysis of the underlying flow equations, we reveal that the computational complexity grows only moderately, as compared to models with only diagonal interaction terms. We apply the formalism to a kagome antiferromagnet which is augmented by general in-plane and out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, as argued to be present in the spin liquid candidate material herbertsmithite. We calculate the complete ground state phase diagram in the strength of in-plane and out-of-plane DM couplings, and discuss the extended stability of the spin liquid of the unperturbed kagome antiferromagnet in the presence of these couplings.
We present a multiloop pseudofermion functional renormalization group (pffRG) approach to quantum spin systems. As a test case, we study the spin-$tfrac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, a prime example of a geometrically frustrated magnet believed to host a quantum spin liquid. Our main physical result is that, at pure nearest-neighbor coupling, the system shows indications for an algebraic spin liquid through slower-than-exponential decay with distance for the static spin susceptibility, while the pseudofermion self-energy develops intriguing low-energy features. Methodologically, the pseudofermion representation of spin models inherently yields a strongly interacting system, and the quantitative reliability of a truncated fRG flow is textit{a priori} unclear. Our main technical result is the demonstration of convergence in loop number within multiloop pffRG. Through correspondence with the self-consistent parquet equations, this provides further evidence for the internal consistency of the approach. The loop order required for convergence of the pseudofermion vertices is rather large, but the spin susceptibility is more benign, appearing almost fully converged for loop orders $ell geq 5$. The multiloop flow remains stable as the infrared cutoff $Lambda$ is reduced relative to the microscopic exchange interaction $J$, allowing us to reach values of $Lambda/J$ on the subpercent level in the spin-liquid phase. By contrast, solving the parquet equations via direct fixed-point iteration becomes increasingly difficult for low $Lambda/J$. We also scrutinize the pseudofermion constraint of single occupation per site, which is only fulfilled on average in pffRG, by explicitly computing fermion-number fluctuations. Although the latter are not entirely suppressed, we find that they do not affect the qualitative conclusions drawn from the spin susceptibility.

We present a detailed functional renormalization group analysis of spin-1/2 dipolar Heisenberg model on square lattice. This model is similar to the well known $J_1$-$J_2$ model and describes the pseudospin degrees of freedom of polar molecules confined in deep optical lattice with long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. Previous study of this model based on tensor network ansatz indicates a paramagnetic ground state for certain dipole tilting angles which can be tuned in experiments to control the exchange couplings. The tensor ansatz formulated on a small cluster unit cell is inadequate to describe the spiral order, and therefore the phase diagram at high azimuthal tilting angles remains undetermined. Here we obtain the full phase diagram of the model from numerical pseudofermion functional renormalization group calculations. We show that an extended quantum paramagnetic phase is realized between the N{e}el and stripe/spiral phase. In this region, the spin susceptibility flows smoothly down to the lowest numerical renormalization group scales with no sign of divergence or breakdown of the flow, in sharp contrast to the flow towards the long-range ordered phases. Our results provide further evidence that the dipolar Heisenberg model is a fertile ground for quantum spin liquids.
The pseudofermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) has been put forward as a semi-analytical scheme that, for a given microscopic spin model, allows to discriminate whether the low-temperature states exhibit magnetic ordering or a tendency towards the formation of quantum spin liquids. However, the precise nature of the putative spin liquid ground state has remained hard to infer from the original (single-site) pf-FRG scheme. Here we introduce a cluster pf-FRG approach, which allows for a more stringent connection between a microscopic spin model and its low-temperature spin liquid ground states. In particular, it allows to calculate spatially structured fermion bilinear expectation values on spatial clusters, which are formed by splitting the original lattice into several sublattices, thereby allowing for the positive identification of a family of bilinear spin liquid states. As an application of this cluster pf-FRG approach, we consider the $J_1$-$J_2$ SU($N$)-Heisenberg model on a square lattice, which is a paradigmatic example for a frustrated quantum magnet exhibiting quantum spin liquid behavior for intermediate coupling strengths. In the well-established large-$N$ limit of this model, we show that our approach correctly captures the emergence of the $pi$-flux spin liquid state at low temperatures. For small $N$, where the precise nature of the ground state remains controversial, we focus on the widely studied case of $N=2$, for which we determine the low-temperature phase diagram near the strongly-frustrated regime after implementing the fermion number constraint by the flowing Popov-Fedotov method. Our results suggest that the $J_1$-$J_2$-Heisenberg model does not support the formation of a fermion bilinear spin liquid state.
