Recently Weyl fermions have attracted increasing interest in condensed matter physics due to their rich phenomenology originated from their nontrivial monopole charges. Here we present a theory of real Dirac points that can be understood as real monopoles in momentum space, serving as a real generalization of Weyl fermions with the reality being endowed by the $PT$ symmetry. The real counterparts of topological features of Weyl semimetals, such as Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem, $2$D sub topological insulators and Fermi arcs, are studied in the $PT$ symmetric Dirac semimetals, and the underlying reality-dependent topological structures are discussed. In particular, we construct a minimal model of the real Dirac semimetals based on recently proposed cold atom experiments and quantum materials about $PT$ symmetric Dirac nodal line semimetals.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a fundamental nonlinear optical phenomenon widely used both for experimental probes of materials and for application to optical devices. Even-order nonlinear optical responses including SHG generally require breaking of inversion symmetry, and thus have been utilized to study noncentrosymmetric materials. Here, we study theoretically the SHG in inversion-symmetric Dirac and Weyl semimetals under a DC current which breaks the inversion symmetry by creating a nonequilibrium steady state. Based on analytic and numerical calculations, we find that Dirac and Weyl semimetals exhibit strong SHG upon application of finite current. Our experimental estimation for a Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ and a magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ suggests that the induced susceptibility $chi^{(2)}$ for practical applied current densities can reach $10^5~mathrm{pm}cdotmathrm{V}^{-1}$ with mid-IR or far-IR light. This value is 10$^2$-10$^4$ times larger than those of typical nonlinear optical materials. We also discuss experimental approaches to observe the current-induced SHG and comment on current-induced SHG in other topological semimetals in connection with recent experiments.
We study non-Hermitian higher-order Weyl semimetals (NHHOWSMs) possessing real spectra and having inversion $mathcal{I}$ ($mathcal{I}$-NHHOWSM) or time-reversal symmetry $mathcal{T}$ ($mathcal{T}$-NHHOWSM). When the reality of bulk spectra is lost, the NHHOWSMs exhibit various configurations of surface Fermi Arcs (FAs) and Exceptional Fermi Rings (EFRs), providing a setup to investigate them on an equal footing. The EFRs only appear in the region between 2nd-order WNs. We also discover Weyl nodes originating from non-Hermicity, called non-Hermitian Weyl nodes (NHWNs). Remarkably, we find T-NHHOWSMs which host only 2nd-order NHWNs, having both surface and hinge FAs protected by the quantized biorthogonal Chern number and quadrupole moment, respectively. We call this intrinsically non-Hermitian phase exceptional HOWSM. In contrast to ordinary WNs, the NHWNs can instantly deform to line nodes, forming a monopole comet. The NHWNs also show exceptional tilt-rigidity, which is a strong resistance towards titling due to attachment to exceptional structures. This phenomenon can be a promising experimental knob. Finally, we reveal the exceptional stability of FAs called exceptional helicity. Surface FAs having opposite chirality can live on the same surface without gapping out each other due to the complex nature of the spectrum. Our work motivates an immediate experimental realization of NHHOWSMs.
In this article we study 3D non-Hermitian higher-order Dirac semimetals (NHHODSMs). Our focus is on $C_4$-symmetric non-Hermitian systems where we investigate inversion ($mathcal{I}$) or time-reversal ($mathcal{T}$) symmetric models of NHHODSMs having real bulk spectra. We show that they exhibit the striking property that the bulk and surfaces are anti-PT and PT symmetric, respectively, and so belong to two different topological classes realizing a novel non-Hermitian topological phase which we call a emph{hybrid-PT topological phases}. Interestingly, while the bulk spectrum is still fully real, we find that exceptional Fermi-rings (EFRs) appear connecting the two Dirac nodes on the surface. This provides a route to probe and utilize both the bulk Dirac physics and exceptional rings/points on equal footing. Moreover, particularly for $mathcal{T}$-NHHODSMs, we also find real hinge-arcs connecting the surface EFRs. We show that this higher-order topology can be characterized using a biorthogonal real-space formula of the quadrupole moment. Furthermore, by applying Hermitian $C_4$-symmetric perturbations, we discover various novel phases, particularly: (i) an intrinsic $mathcal{I}$-NHHODSM having hinge arcs and gapped surfaces, and (ii) a novel $mathcal{T}$-symmetric skin-topological HODSM which possesses both topological and skin hinge modes. The interplay between non-Hermition and higher-order topology in this work paves the way toward uncovering rich phenomena and hybrid functionality that can be readily realized in experiment.
Within a Kubo formalism, we study dc transport and ac optical properties of 3D Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Emphasis is placed on the approach to charge neutrality and on the differences between Dirac and Weyl materials. At charge neutrality, the zero-temperature limit of the dc conductivity is not universal and also depends on the residual scattering model employed. However, the Lorenz number L retains its usual value L_0. With increasing temperature, the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated. At high temperatures, L exhibits a new plateau at a value dependent on the details of the scattering rate. Such details can also appear in the optical conductivity, both in the Drude response and interband background. In the clean limit, the interband background is linear in photon energy and always extrapolates to the origin. This background can be shifted to the right through the introduction of a massless gap. In this case, the extrapolation can cut the axis at a finite photon energy as is observed in some experiments. It is also of interest to differentiate between the two types of Weyl semimetals: those with broken time-reversal symmetry and those with broken spatial-inversion symmetry. We show that, while the former will follow the same behaviour as the 3D Dirac semimetals, for the zero magnetic field properties discussed here, the latter type will show a double step in the optical conductivity at finite doping and a single absorption edge at charge neutrality. The Drude conductivity is always finite in this case, even at charge neutrality.
Dirac and Weyl semimetals both exhibit arc-like surface states. However, whereas the surface Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals are topological consequences of the Weyl points themselves, the surface Fermi arcs in Dirac semimetals are not directly related to the bulk Dirac points, raising the question of whether there exists a topological bulk-boundary correspondence for Dirac semimetals. In this work, we discover that strong and fragile topological Dirac semimetals exhibit 1D higher-order hinge Fermi arcs (HOFAs) as universal, direct consequences of their bulk 3D Dirac points. To predict HOFAs coexisting with topological surface states in solid-state Dirac semimetals, we introduce and layer a spinful model of an $s-d$-hybridized quadrupole insulator (QI). We develop a rigorous nested Jackiw-Rebbi formulation of QIs and HOFA states. Employing $ab initio$ calculations, we demonstrate HOFAs in both the room- ($alpha$) and intermediate-temperature ($alpha$) phases of Cd$_{3}$As$_2$, KMgBi, and rutile-structure ($beta$-) PtO$_2$.
