Generation of free-space laser-like emissions of high spatiotemporal coherence and narrow bandwidth in atmosphere opens promising opportunities for remote spectroscopic sensing. Here, we report on generation of such laser-like emissions, which results from the combined contributions of perturbative and non-perturbative nonlinear optical effects in nitrogen molecules exposed to intense mid-infrared laser fields. We systematically investigate the dependence of the generated free-space laser spectrum on wavelength and power of the driver laser. It is revealed that the free-space laser is produced by resonant Raman amplification of the fifth harmonic of the driver pulses in rotational wavepacket of the molecular nitrogen ions.

Generation of laser-like narrow bandwidth emissions from nitrogen molecular ions generated in intense near- and mid-infrared femtosecond laser fields has aroused much interest because of the mysterious physics underlying such a phenomenon as well as the potential application of such an effect in atmospheric spectroscopic sensing. Here, we perform a pump-probe measurement on the nonlinear interaction of rotational quantum wavepackets of nitrogen molecular ions generated in mid-infrared (e.g., at a wavelength centered at 1580 nm) femtosecond laser fields with an ultrashort probe pulse whose broad spectrum overlaps both P- and R-branch rotational transition lines between the upper and lower electronic states. The results show that in the near-resonant conditions, stimulated Raman amplification can efficiently occur which converts the broad bandwidth ultrashort probe pulse into the narrow bandwidth laser-like beam. Our finding provides an insight into the physical mechanism of strong field induced lasing actions in atmospheric environment.
We report generation of spectrally bright vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and deep UV (DUV) coherent radiations driven by quantum coherence in tunnel-ionized carbon monoxide (CO) molecules. Our technique allows us to switch between multiple wavelengths provided by the abundant energy levels of molecular ions. The DUV/VUV sources can have arbitrary polarization states by manipulating the pump laser polarization. The superior temporal and spectral properties of the developed source give rise to a broadband Raman comb in the DUV/VUV region.
We demonstrate a route to supercontinuum generation in gas-filled hollow-core anti-resonant fibers through the creation of a broad vibrational Raman frequency comb followed by continuous broadening and merging of the comb lines through either rotational Raman scattering or the optical Kerr effect. Our demonstration experiments, utilizing a single pump pulse with 20 ps duration at 532 nm in a nitrogen-filled fiber, produce a supercontinuum spanning from 440 nm to 1200 nm, with an additional deep ultraviolet continuum from 250 nm to 360 nm. Numerical results suggest that this approach can produce even broader supercontinuum spectra extending from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared.
Free-electron lasers (FELs) seeded with external lasers hold great promise for generating high power radiation with nearly transform-limited bandwidth in soft x-ray region. However, it has been pointed out that the initial seed laser noise will be amplified by the frequency up-conversion process, which may degrade the quality of the output radiation produced by a harmonic generation scheme. In this paper, theoretical and simulation studies for laser phase error amplification in seeded FEL schemes with slippage effect taken into account are presented. It is found that, the seed laser imperfection experienced by the electron beam can be significantly smoothed by the slippage effect in the modulator when the slippage length is comparable to the laser pulse length. This smoothing effect allows one to preserve the excellent temporal coherence of seeded FELs in presence of large laser phase errors. For ultra-short UV seed lasers with FWHM around 16 fs, the slippage length in a modulator with ~30 undulator periods is typically comparable to the laser width; for longer seed laser pulses with FWHM around 80 fs, the slippage length can be made comparable to the laser width using a modulator tuned at the sub-harmonic of the UV seed laser. Three-dimensional simulations have been carried out for a soft x-ray facility using seed laser pulses with large frequency chirp and the results show that the sensitivity of the bandwidth of the seeded FEL to the initial frequency chirp can be significantly reduced by a proper design of the modulator such that the slippage length is comparable to the laser width. Our studies show that the tolerance on laser phase error for generating nearly transform-limited soft x-ray pulses in seeded FELs is much looser than previously thought and fully coherent radiation at nanometer wavelength may be reached with current technologies.
We describe the application of Raman Optical-fiber Amplification (ROA) for the phase coherent transfer of optical frequencies in an optical fiber link. ROA uses the transmission fiber itself as a gain medium for bi-directional coherent amplification. In a test setup we evaluated the ROA in terms of on-off gain, signal-to-noise ratio, and phase noise added to the carrier. We transferred a laser frequency in a 200 km optical fiber link with an additional 16 dB fixed attenuator (equivalent to 275 km of fiber on a single span), and evaluated both co-propagating and counter-propagating amplification pump schemes, demonstrating nonlinear effects limiting the co-propagating pump configuration. The frequency at the remote end has a fractional frequency instability of 3e-19 over 1000 s with the optical fiber link noise compensation.
