The layered compound with distorted Kagome nets, Dy3Ru4Al12, was previously reported to undergo antiferromagnetic ordering below (TN=) 7 K, based on investigations on single crystals. Here, we report the results of our investigation of ac and dc magnetic susceptibility (c{hi}), isothermal remnant magnetization (MIRM), heat-capacity, magnetocaloric effect and magnetoresistance measurements on polycrystals. The present results reveal that there is an additional magnetic anomaly around 20 K, as though the Neel order is preceded by the formation of ferromagnetic clusters. We attribute this feature to geometric frustration of magnetism. In view of the existence of this phase, the interpretation of the linear-term in the heat-capacity in terms of spin-fluctuations from the Ru 4d band needs to be revisited. Additionally, in the vicinity of TN, AC c{hi} shows a prominent frequency dependence and, below TN, MIRM exhibits a slow decay with time. This raises a question whether the antiferromagnetic structure in this compound is characterized by spin-glass-like dynamics. In contrast to what was reported earlier, there is a change in the sign of the magnetoresistance (MR) at the metamagnetic transition. A butter-fly-shaped (isothermal) MR loop (interestingly spanning over all the four quadrants) is observed at 2 K with distinct evidence for the magnetic phase co-existence phenomenon in zero field after travelling through metamagnetic transition field. The results on polycrystals thus provide additional information about the magnetism of this compound, revealing that the magnetism of this compound is more complex than what is believed, due to geometric frustration intrinsic to Kagome net.

Impurities, which are inherently present in any real material, may play an important role in the magnetism of frustrated spin systems with spin-liquid ground states. We address the impurity issue in quantum kagome antiferromagnets by investigating ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$SO$_4$ (Zn-brochantite) by means of muon spin spectroscopy. We show that muons couple to the impurity magnetism, originating from Cu-Zn intersite disorder, and that the impurities are highly correlated with the kagome spins, allowing us to probe the intrinsic kagome physics via a Kondo-like effect. The low-temperature plateau in local susceptibility identifies the spin-liquid ground state as being gapless. The corresponding spin fluctuations exhibit an unconventional spectral density and an intriguing field dependence.
The hole-doped kagome lattice of Cu2+ ions in LaCuO2.66 was investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), electron spin resonance (ESR), electrical resistivity, bulk magnetization and specific heat measurements. For temperatures above ~180 K, the spin and charge properties show an activated behavior suggestive of a narrow-gap semiconductor. At lower temperatures, the results indicate an insulating ground state which may or may not be charge ordered. While the frustrated spins in remaining patches of the original kagome lattice might not be directly detected here, the observation of coexisting non-magnetic sites, free spins and frozen moments reveals an intrinsically inhomogeneous magnetism. Numerical simulations of a 1/3-diluted kagome lattice rationalize this magnetic state in terms of a heterogeneous distribution of cluster sizes and morphologies near the site-percolation threshold.

We report bulk magnetization, and elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements under an external magnetic field, $H$, on the weakly coupled distorted kagome system, Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl. Our results show that the ordered state below 6.7 K is a canted antiferromagnet and consists of large antiferromagnetic $ac$-components and smaller ferromagnetic $b$-components. By first-principle calculations and linear spin wave analysis, we present a simple spin hamiltonian with non-uniform nearest neighbor exchange interactions resulting in a system of coupled spin trimers with a single-ion anisotropy that can qualitatively reproduce the spin dynamics of Cu_{2}(OD)_3Cl.

The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown material LaCaScIrO$_6$ is reported. LaCaScIrO$_6$ presents a new example of the rare case of a double perovskite with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5textit{d}-ion Ir$^{4+}$ as its only magnetic species, forming a monoclinically distorted version of the frustrated fcc lattice. Magnetization measurements show a weak anomaly at 8~K. The Curie-Weiss temperature Theta$_{CW}$ and effective magnetic moment mu$_{eff}$ of LaCaScIrO$_6$ are in close proximity to the related compound La$_2$MgIrO$_6$ but differ from La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. This suggests that the nature of the non-magnetic textit{B}-ion, namely its textit{d}-orbital filling has a strong influence on the magnetic properties. The textit{d}$^{0}$-ions Sc$^{3+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$ allow a different kind of exchange interactions within the Ir-sublattice than the textit{d}$^{10}$-ion Zn$^{2+}$. In addition, ac-susceptibility data does not show signs of a spin-glass ground state. The nature of the magnetism in LaCaScIrO$_6$ has been further elucidated using muon spin relaxation measurements. The zero-field measurements reveal the absence of well defined oscillations down to 1.6,K, while temperature dependent $mu$SR studies show an anomaly at 8,K. Overall, our results suggest the presence of two different magnetic environments or domains in LaCaScIrO$_6$, which is likely related to its structural features.
Analyzing temperature dependent photoemission (PE) data of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice (KL) system YbNiSn in the light of the Periodic Anderson model (PAM) we show that the KL behavior is not limited to temperatures below a temperature T_K, defined empirically from resistivity and specificic heat measurements. As characteristic for weakly hybridized Ce and Yb systems, the PE spectra reveal a 4f-derived Fermi level peak, which reflects contributions from the Kondo resonance and its crystal electric field (CEF) satellites. In YbNiSn this peak has an unusual temperature dependence: With decreasing temperature a steady linear increase of intensity is observed which extends over a large interval ranging from 100 K down to 1 K without showing any peculiarities in the region of T_K ~ TC= 5.6 K. In the light of the single-impurity Anderson model (SIAM) this intensity variation reflects a linear increase of 4f occupancy with decreasing temperature, indicating an onset of Kondo screening at temperatures above 100 K. Within the PAM this phenomenon could be described by a non-Fermi liquid like T- linear damping of the self-energy which accounts phenomenologically for the feedback from the closely spaced CEF-states.
