The discovery of the neutrino mixing angle $theta_{13}$ opens new opportunities for the discovery of the leptonic CP violation for high intensity neutrino beams. MOMENT a future neutrino facility with a high-power proton beam of 15 MW from a continuous-wave linac is focused on that discovery. The high power of the proton beam causes extreme radiation conditions for the facility and especially for the target station where the pion capture system of five superconducting solenoids is located. In this paper initial studies are performed for the effects of the radiation on the solenoid structure and the area surrounding it. A concept cooling system is also proposed.

Meson factories are powerful drivers of diverse physics programmes. With beam powers already in the MW-regime attention has to be turned to target and beam line design to further significantly increase surface muon rates available for experiments. For this reason we have explored the possibility of using a neutron spallation target as a source of surface muons by performing detailed Geant4 simulations with pion production cross sections based on a parametrization of existing data. While the spallation target outperforms standard targets in the backward direction by more than a factor 7 it is not more efficient than standard targets viewed under 90{deg}. Not surprisingly, the geometry of the target plays a large role in the generation of surface muons. Through careful optimization, a gain in surface muon rate of between 30 - 60% over the standard box-like target used at the Paul Scherrer Institute could be achieved by employing a rotated slab target. An additional 10% gain could also be possible by utilizing novel target materials such as, e.g., boron carbide.
The development of instrumentation to be operated in high-radiation environments is one of the main challenges in fundamental research. Besides space and nuclear applications, particle physics experiments also need radiation-hard devices. The focus of this paper is a new irradiation facility based on the medical cyclotron located at the Bern University Hospital (Insespital), which is used as a controlled 18 MeV proton source. The adjustable beam current allows for dose rate dependent characterisation over a large dynamic range, from 0.1 to 1000 Grad per hour. The beam can be tuned so that the user can obtain the desired irradiation conditions. A complete study of the device under irradiation is possible thanks to dedicated beam monitoring systems as well as a power control system for the device under irradiation, which can be operated on-line. Further characterisations of the irradiated devices are possible thanks to a laboratory equipped with gamma spectroscopy detectors, ammeters and transient current technique setups.

The Kaon Production Target (KPT) is an important component of the proposed K-Long facility which will be operated in JLab Hall~D, targeting strange baryon and meson spectroscopy. In this note we present a conceptual design for the Be-target assembly for the planned K-Long beam line, which will be used along with the GlueX spectrometer in its standard configuration for the proposed experiments. The high quality 12-GeV CEBAF electron beam enables production of a K$_L$ flux at the GlueX target on the order of $1times 10^4 K_L/sec$, which exceeds the K$_L$ flux previously attained at SLAC by three orders of magnitude. An intense K$_L$ beam would open a new window of opportunity not only to locate missing resonances in the strange hadron spectrum, but also to establish their properties by studying different decay channels systematically. The most important and radiation damaging background in K$_L$ production is due to neutrons. The Monte Carlo simulations for the proposed conceptual design of KPT show that the resulting neutron and gamma flux lead to a prompt radiation dose rate for the KLF experiment that is below the JLab Radiation Control Department radiation dose rate limits in the experimental hall and at the site boundary, and will not substantially affect the performance of the spectrometer.

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{mu}$ and $d_{mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5times 10^{-21}~ecdotmbox{cm}$.

The linear motor driving the target for the Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment has been redesigned to improve its reliability and performance. A new coil-winding technique is described which produces better magnetic alignment and improves heat transport out of the windings. Improved field-mapping has allowed the more precise construction to be demonstrated, and an enhanced controller exploits the full features of the hardware, enabling increased acceleration and precision. The new user interface is described and analysis of performance data to monitor friction is shown to allow quality control of bearings and a measure of the ageing of targets during use.
