The ytterbium pyrochlore magnets, Yb2B2O7 (B = Sn, Ti, Ge) are well described by S_eff = 1/2 quantum spins decorating a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra and interacting via anisotropic exchange. Structurally, only the non-magnetic B-site cation, and hence, primarily the lattice parameter, is changing across the series. Nonetheless, a range of magnetic behaviors are observed: the low temperature magnetism in Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7 has ferromagnetic character, while Yb2Ge2O7 displays an antiferromagnetically ordered Neel state at low temperatures. While the static properties of the ytterbium pyrochlores are distinct, inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal a common character to their exotic spin dynamics. All three ytterbium pyrochlores show a gapless continuum of spin excitations, resembling over-damped ferromagnetic spin waves at low Q. Furthermore, the specific heat of the series also follows a common form, with a broad, high-temperature anomaly followed by a sharp low-temperature anomaly at T_C or T_N. The novel spin dynamics we report correlate strongly with the broad specific heat anomaly only, remaining unchanged across the sharp anomaly. This result suggests that the primary order parameter in the ytterbium pyrochlores associated with the sharp anomaly is hidden and not simple magnetic dipole order.

We present new magnetic heat capacity and neutron scattering results for two magnetically frustrated molybdate pyrochlores: $S=1$ oxide Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ and $S={frac{1}{2}}$ oxynitride Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_5$N$_2$. Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ undergoes a transition to an unconventional spin glass ground state at $T_f {sim} 16$ K. However, the preparation of the corresponding oxynitride tunes the nature of the ground state from spin glass to quantum spin liquid. The comparison of the static and dynamic spin correlations within the oxide and oxynitride phases presented here reveals the crucial role played by quantum fluctuations in the selection of a ground state. Furthermore, we estimate an upper limit for a gap in the spin excitation spectrum of the quantum spin liquid state of the oxynitride of ${Delta} {sim} 0.05$ meV or ${frac{Delta}{|theta|}}sim0.004$, in units of its antiferromagnetic Weiss constant ${theta} {sim}-121$ K.

The dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore oxides R$_2$M$_2$O$_7$ (R=Ce, Sm, Nd) represent an important opportunity in the search for three dimensional Quantum Spin Liquid (QSL) ground states. Their low energy physics is governed by an alluringly simple XYZ Hamiltonian, enabling theoretical description with only a small number of free parameters. Meanwhile, recent experiments on Ce pyrochlores strongly suggest QSL physics. Motivated by this, we present here a complete analysis of the ground state phase diagram of dipolar-octupolar pyrochlores. Combining cluster mean field theory, variational arguments and exact diagonalization we find multiple U(1) QSL phases which together occupy a large fraction of the parameter space. These results give a comprehensive picture of the ground state physics of an important class of QSL candidates and support the possibility of a $U(1)$ QSL ground state in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$.
The search for new quantum phases, especially in frustrated magnets, is central to modern condensed matter physics. One of the most promising places to look is in rare-earth pyrochlore magnets with highly-anisotropic exchange interactions, materials closely related to the spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7. Here we establish a general theory of magnetic order in these materials. We find that many of their most interesting properties can be traced back to the accidental degeneracies where phases with different symmetry meet. These include the ordered ground state selection by fluctuations in Er2Ti2O7, the dimensional-reduction observed in Yb2Ti2O7, and the absence of magnetic order in Er2Sn2O7.
We present a study of the evolution of magnetism from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2. Single crystals of Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 were grown for 0 < x < 1 and studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements, as well as photoemission spectroscopy. The results evidence a complex magnetic phase diagram, with a non-monotonic evolution of T_N and two successive transitions for some compositions resulting in two tricritical points. The strong similarity with the phase diagram of YbRh2Si2 under pressure indicates that Co substitution basically corresponds to the application of positive chemical pressure. Analysis of the data proves a strong reduction of the Kondo temperature T_K with increasing Co content, T_K becoming smaller than T_N for x ~ 0.5, implying a strong localization of the 4f electrons. Furthermore, low-temperature susceptibility data confirm a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange. The series Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 provides an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the magnetism at the quantum critical point in the vicinity of YbRh2Si2 where the antiferromagnetic phase disappears (T_N=>0).
We report low temperature specific heat and muon spin relaxation/rotation ($mu$SR) measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This system is believed to possess a spin Hamiltonian supporting a Quantum Spin Ice (QSI) ground state and to display sample variation in its low temperature heat capacity. Our two samples exhibit extremes of this sample variation, yet our $mu$SR measurements indicate a similar disordered low temperature state down to 16 mK in both. We report little temperature dependence to the spin relaxation and no evidence for ferromagnetic order, in contrast to recent reports by Chang emph{et al.} (Nat. Comm. {bf 3}, 992 (2012)). Transverse field (TF) $mu$SR measurements show changes in the temperature dependence of the muon Knight shift which coincide with heat capacity anomalies. We are therefore led to propose that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a hidden order ground state below $T_csim265$ mK where the nature of the ordered state is unknown but distinct from simple long range order.
