We consider the quasi-two-dimensional pseudo-spin-1/2 Kitaev - Heisenberg model proposed for A2IrO3 (A=Li, Na) compounds. The spin-wave excitation spectrum, the sublattice magnetization, and the transition temperatures are calculated in the random phase approximation (RPA) for four different ordered phases, observed in the parameter space of the model: antiferomagnetic, stripe, ferromagnetic, and zigzag phases. The N{e}el temperature and temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization are compared with the experimental data on Na2IrO3.

We present a spin-rotation-invariant Green-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a stacked honeycomb lattice. Employing a generalized mean-field approximation for arbitrary temperatures, the thermodynamic quantities (two-spin correlation functions, internal energy, magnetic susceptibility, staggered magnetization, Neel temperature, correlation length) and the spin-excitation spectrum are calculated by solving a coupled system of self-consistency equations for the correlation functions. The temperature dependence of the magnetic (uniform static) susceptibility is ascribed to antiferromagnetic short-range order. The N{e}el temperature is calculated for arbitrary interlayer couplings. Our results are in a good agreement with numerical computations for finite clusters and with available experimental data on the beta-Cu2V2O2 compound.
We calculate magnon dispersions and damping in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model with an off-diagonal exchange $Gamma$ and isotropic third-nearest-neighbor interaction $J_3$ on a honeycomb lattice. This model is relevant to a description of the magnetic properties of iridium oxides $alpha$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$, and Ru-based materials such as $alpha$-RuCl$_3$. We use an unconventional parametrization of the spin-wave expansion, in which each Holstein-Primakoff boson is represented by two conjugate hermitian operators. This approach gives us an advantage over the conventional one in identifying parameter regimes where calculations can be performed analytically. Focusing on the parameter regime with the zigzag spin pattern in the ground state that is consistent with experiments, we demonstrate that one such region is $Gamma = K>0$, where $K$ is the Kitaev coupling. Within our approach we are able to obtain explicit analytical expressions for magnon energies and eigenstates and go beyond the standard linear spin-wave theory approximation by calculating magnon damping and demonstrating its role in the dynamical structure factor. We show that the magnon damping effects in both Born and self-consistent approximations are very significant, underscoring the importance of non-linear magnon coupling in interpreting broad features in the neutron-scattering spectra.

With the advancement in synthesizing and analyzing Kitaev materials, the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice has attracted a lot of attention in the last few years. Several variations, which include additional anisotropic interactions as well as response to external magnetic field, have been investigated and many exotic ordered phases have been discussed. On the other hand, quantum spin systems are proving to be a fertile ground to realize and study bosonic analogues of fermionic topological states of matter. Using the spin-wave theory we show that the ferromagnetic phase of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model hosts topological excitations. Along the zig-zag edge of the honeycomb lattice we find chiral edge states, which are protected by a non-zero Chern number topological invariant. We discuss two different scenarios for the direction of the spin polarization namely $[001]$ and $[111]$, which are motivated by possible directions of applied field. Dynamic structure factor, accessible in scattering experiments, is shown to exhibit signatures of these topological edge excitations. Furthermore, we show that in case of spin polarization in $[001]$ direction, a topological phase transition occurs once the Kitaev couplings are made anisotropic.
Using variational wave functions and Monte Carlo techniques, we study the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with first-neighbor $J_1$ and second-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic couplings on the honeycomb lattice. We perform a systematic comparison of magnetically ordered and nonmagnetic states (spin liquids and valence-bond solids) to obtain the ground-state phase diagram. Neel order is stabilized for small values of the frustrating second-neighbor coupling. Increasing the ratio $J_2/J_1$, we find strong evidence for a continuous transition to a nonmagnetic phase at $J_2/J_1 approx 0.23$. Close to the transition point, the Gutzwiller-projected uniform resonating valence bond state gives an excellent approximation to the exact ground-state energy. For $0.23 lesssim J_2/J_1 lesssim 0.4$, a gapless $Z_2$ spin liquid with Dirac nodes competes with a plaquette valence-bond solid. In contrast, the gapped spin liquid considered in previous works has significantly higher variational energy. Although the plaquette valence-bond order is expected to be present as soon as the Neel order melts, this ordered state becomes clearly favored only for $J_2/J_1 gtrsim 0.3$. Finally, for $0.36 lesssim J_2/J_1 le 0.5$, a valence-bond solid with columnar order takes over as the ground state, being also lower in energy than the magnetic state with collinear order. We perform a detailed finite-size scaling and standard data collapse analysis, and we discuss the possibility of a deconfined quantum critical point separating the Neel antiferromagnet from the plaquette valence-bond solid.

We present a spin-rotation-invariant Green-function theory for the dynamic spin susceptibility in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic t-J Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. Employing a generalized mean-field approximation for arbitrary temperatures and hole dopings, the electronic spectrum of excitations, the spin-excitation spectrum and thermodynamic quantities (two-spin correlation functions, staggered magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, correlation length) are calculated by solving a coupled system of self-consistency equations for the correlation functions. The temperature and doping dependence of the magnetic (uniform static) susceptibility is ascribed to antiferromagnetic short-range order. Our results on the doping dependencies of the magnetization and susceptibility are analyzed in comparison with previous results for the t_J model on the square lattice.
