Quantum metrology exploits entangled states of particles to improve sensing precision beyond the limit achievable with uncorrelated particles. All previous methods required detection noise levels below this standard quantum limit to realize the benefits of the intrinsic sensitivity provided by these states. Remarkably, a recent proposal has shown that, in principle, such low-noise detection is not a necessary requirement. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a widely applicable method for entanglement-enhanced measurements without low-noise detection. Using an intermediate magnification step, we perform squeezed state metrology 8 dB below the standard quantum limit with a detection system that has a noise floor 10 dB above the standard quantum limit. Beyond its conceptual significance, this method eases implementation complexity and is expected to find application in next generation quantum sensors.

I give a scientific perspective, with a personal emphasis, on the seminal 1992 paper, The quantum-state diffusion model applied to open systems, by Gisin and Percival.
We demonstrate an experimental realization of remote state preparation via the quantum teleportation algorithm, using an entangled photon pair in the polarization degree of freedom as the quantum resource. The input state is encoded on the path of one of the photons from the pair. The improved experimental scheme allows us to control the preparation and teleportation of a state over the entire Bloch sphere with a resolution of the degree of mixture given by the coherence length of the photon pair. Both the preparation of the input state and the implementation of the quantum gates are performed in a pair of chained displaced Sagnac interferometers, which contribute to the overall robustness of the setup. An average fidelity above 0.9 is obtained for the remote state preparation process. This scheme allows for a prepared state to be transmitted on every repetition of the experiment, thus giving an intrinsic success probability of 1.
The conditions are investigated under which a row of increasing dominoes is able to keep tumbling over. The analysis is restricted to the simplest case of frictionless dominoes that only can topple not slide. The model is scale invariant, i.e. dominoes and distance grow in size at a fixed rate, while keeping the aspect ratios of the dominoes constant. The maximal growth rate for which a domino effect exist is determined as a function of the mutual separation.

Multi-photon quantum interference is the underlying principle for optical quantum information processing protocols. Indistinguishability is the key to quantum interference. Therefore, the success of many protocols in optical quantum information processing relies on the availability of photon states with a well-defined spatial and temporal mode. Photons in single spatial mode can be obtained from nonlinear processes in single-mode waveguides. For the temporal mode, the common approach is to engineer the nonlinear processes. But it is complicated because the spectral properties and the nonlinear interaction are often intertwined through phase matching condition. In this paper, we study a different approach which is based on an SU(1,1) nonlinear interferometer with a pulsed pump and a controllable linear spectral phase shift for precise engineering. We systematically analyze the important figures of merit such as modal purity and heralding efficiency to investigate the feasibility of this approach. Specifically, we analyze in detail the requirement on the spectral phase engineering to optimize the figures of merit and apply numerical simulations to a fiber system. Both modal purity and efficiency are improved simultaneously. Furthermore, a novel multi-stage nonlinear interferometer is proposed and shown to achieve more precise state engineering for near-ideal single-mode operation and near-unity efficiency. We also extend the study to the case of high gain in the four-wave mixing process for the spectral engineering of quantum entanglement in continuous variables. Our investigation provides a new approach for precisely tailoring the spectral property of quantum light sources, especially, photon pairs can be engineered to simultaneously possess the features of high purity, high collection efficiency, high brightness, and high flexibility in wavelength and bandwidth selection.
Quantum state tomography is a key process in most quantum experiments. In this work, we employ quantum machine learning for state tomography. Given an unknown quantum state, it can be learned by maximizing the fidelity between the output of a variational quantum circuit and this state. The number of parameters of the variational quantum circuit grows linearly with the number of qubits and the circuit depth, so that only polynomial measurements are required, even for highly-entangled states. After that, a subsequent classical circuit simulator is used to transform the information of the target quantum state from the variational quantum circuit into a familiar format. We demonstrate our method by performing numerical simulations for the tomography of the ground state of a one-dimensional quantum spin chain, using a variational quantum circuit simulator. Our method is suitable for near-term quantum computing platforms, and could be used for relatively large-scale quantum state tomography for experimentally relevant quantum states.
