In the present work, we study the magnetic properties of the NbS2 monolayer by first-principles calculations. The transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are a family of laminar materials presenting exciting properties such as charge density waves (CDW), superconductivity and metal-insulating transitions among others. 2H-NbS2 is a particular case within the family, because it is the only one that is superconductor without exhibiting a CDW order. Although no long range magnetic order was experimentally observed in the TMDC, we show here that the single monolayer of NbS2 is on the verge of a spin density wave (SDW) phase. Our calculations indicate that a wave-like magnetic order is stabilized in the NbS2 monolayer in the presence of magnetic defects or within zig-zag nanoribbons, due to the presence of unpaired electrons. We calculate the real part of the bare electronic susceptibilty and the corresponding nesting function of the clean NbS2 monolayer, showing that there are strong electronic instabilities at the same wavevector asociated with the calculated SDWs, also corresponding with one of the main nesting vectors of the Fermi surface. We conclude that the physical mechanism behind the spin-wave instabilities are the nesting properties, accentuated by the quasi 2D character of this system, and the rather strong Coulomb interactions of the 4d band of the Nb atom. We also estimate the amplitude of the spin-fluctuations and find that they are rather large, as expected for a system on the verge of a quantum critical transition.

Here we report a scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study in the superconducting state of 2H-NbS2. We directly visualize the existence of incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) that is pinned by atomic impurities. In strong tunneling conditions, the incommensurate CDW is de-pinned from impurities by the electric field from STM tip. We perform STM-based inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) to detect phonon excitations in 2H-NbS2 and measure the influence of atomic impurities on local phonon excitations. In comparison with the calculated vibrational density of states in 2H-NbS2, we find two branches of phonon excitations which correspond to the vibrations of Nb ions and S ions, and the strength of the local phonon excitations is insensitive to the atomic impurities. Our results demonstrate the coexistence of incommensurate CDW and superconductivity in 2H-NbS2, and open the way of detecting atomic-scale phonon excitations in transition metal dichalcogenides with STM-based IETS.
Recently fabricated InSe monolayers exhibit remarkable characteristics that indicate the potential of this material to host a number of many-body phenomena. Here, we consistently describe collective electronic effects in hole-doped InSe monolayers using advanced many-body techniques. To this end, we derive a realistic electronic-structure model from first principles that takes into account the most important characteristics of this material, including a flat band with prominent van Hove singularities in the electronic spectrum, strong electron-phonon coupling, and weakly-screened long-ranged Coulomb interactions. We calculate the temperature-dependent phase diagram as a function of band filling and observe that this system is in a regime with coexisting charge density wave and ferromagnetic instabilities that are driven by strong electronic Coulomb correlations. This regime can be achieved at realistic doping levels and high enough temperatures, and can be verified experimentally. We find that the electron-phonon interaction does not play a crucial role in these effects, effectively suppressing the local Coulomb interaction without changing the qualitative physical picture.
Despite the progress made in successful prediction of many classes of weakly-correlated topological materials, it is not clear how a topological order can emerge from interacting orders and whether or not a charge ordered topological state can exist in a two-dimensional (2D) material. Here, through first-principles modeling and analysis, we identify a 2$times$2 charge density wave (CDW) phase in monolayer $2H$-NbSe$_2$ that harbors coexisting quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, topological crystalline insulator (TCI) and topological nodal line (TNL) semimetal states. The topology in monolayer NbSe$_2$ is driven by the formation of the CDW and the associated symmetry-breaking periodic lattice distortions and not via a pre-existing topology. Our finding of an emergent triple-topological state in monolayer $2H$-NbSe$_2$ will offer novel possibilities for exploring connections between different topologies and a unique materials platform for controllable CDW-induced topological states for potential applications in quantum electronics and spintronics and Majorana-based quantum computing.

We study the intra-valley spin-orbit mediated spin relaxation in monolayers of MoS2 within a two bands effective Hamiltonian. The intrinsic spin splitting of the valence band as well as a Rashba-like coupling due to the breaking of the out-of-plane inversion symmetry are considered. We show that, in the hole doped regime, the out-of-plane spin relaxation is not very efficient since the spin splitting of the valence band tends to stabilize the spin polarization in this direction. We obtain spin lifetimes larger than nanoseconds, in agreement with recent valley polarization experiments.
Charge density waves in transition metal dichalcogenides have been intensively studied for their close correlation with Mott insulator, charge-transfer insulator, and superconductor. VTe2 monolayer recently comes into sight because of its prominent electron correlations and the mysterious origin of CDW orders. As a metal of more than one type of charge density waves, it involves complicated electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions. Through a scanning tunneling microscopy study, we observed triple-Q 4-by-4 and single-Q 4-by-1 modulations with significant charge and orbital separation. The triple-Q 4-by-4 order arises strongly from the p-d hybridized states, resulting in a charge distribution in agreement with the V-atom clustering model. Associated with a lower Fermi level, the local single-Q 4-by-1 electronic pattern is generated with the p-d hybridized states remaining 4-by-4 ordered. In the spectroscopic study, orbital- and atomic- selective charge-density-wave gaps with the size up to ~400 meV were resolved on the atomic scale.
