We demonstrated the operation of a high finesse optical cavity without utilizing an active feedback system to stabilize the resonance. The effective finesse, which is a finesse including the overall system performance, of the cavity was measured to be $394,000 pm 10,000$, and the laser power stored in the cavity was $2.52 pm 0.13$ kW, which is approximately 187,000 times greater than the incident power to the cavity. The stored power was stabilized with a fluctuation of $1.7 %$, and we confirmed continuous cavity operation for more than two hours. This result has the potential to trigger an innovative evolution for applications that use optical resonant cavities such as compact photon sources with laser-Compton scattering or cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy.

A power enhancement optical cavity is a compelling means of realizing a pulsed laser with a high peak power and high repetition frequency, which is not feasible using a simple amplifier scheme. However, a precise feedback system is necessary for maintaining the narrow resonance condition of the optical cavity; this has become a major technical issue in developing such cavities. We have developed a new approach that does not require any active feedback system, by placing the cavity in the outer loop of a laser amplifier. We report on the first demonstration of a mode-locked pulse oscillation using the new system.
It is commonly accepted that a collection of pumped atoms without a resonator, which provides feedback, cannot lase. We show that intermodal coupling via active atoms pulls the frequencies of the free-space modes towards the transition frequency of the atoms. Although at a low pump rate mode phases randomly fluctuate, phase realizations at which interference of pulled modes is constructive emerge. This results in an increase of stimulated emission into such realizations and makes their lifetime longer. Thus, mode pulling provides positive feedback. When the pump rate exceeds a certain threshold, the lifetime of one of the realizations diverges, and radiation becomes coherent.
we investigate the transmission of probe laser beam in a coupled-cavity system with polaritons by using standard input-output relation of optical fields, and proposed a theoretical schema for realizing a polariton-based photonic transistor. On account of effects of exciton-photon coupling and single-photon optomechanical coupling, a probe laser field can be either amplified or attenuated by another pump laser field when it passes through a coupled-cavity system with polaritons. The Stokes and anti-Stokes scattered effect of output prober laser can also be modulated. Our results open up exciting possibilities for designing photonic transistors.

We analyse the effect of optical feedback on the dynamics of external-cavity mode-locked semiconductor lasers operated in the long cavity regime. Depending on the ratio between the cavity round-trip time and the feedback delay, we show experimentally that feedback acts as a solution discriminator that either reinforces or hinders the appearance of one of the multiple coexisting mode-locked harmonic solutions. Our theoretical analysis reproduces well the experiment. We identify asymmetrical resonance tongues due to the temporal symmetry breaking induced by gain depletion.
Control of the motion of cavity solitons is one the central problems in nonlinear optical pattern formation. We report on the impact of the phase of the time-delayed optical feedback and carrier lifetime on the self-mobility of localized structures of light in broad area semiconductor cavities. We show both analytically and numerically that the feedback phase strongly affects the drift instability threshold as well as the velocity of cavity soliton motion above this threshold. In addition we demonstrate that non-instantaneous carrier response in the semiconductor medium is responsible for the increase in critical feedback rate corresponding to the drift instability.
