The general Dirac equation in 1+1 dimensions with a potential with a completely general Lorentz structure is studied. Considering mixed vector-scalar-pseudoscalar square potentials, the states of relativistic fermions are investigated. This relativistic problem can be mapped into a effective Schr{o}dinger equation for a square potential with repulsive and attractive delta-functions situated at the borders. An oscillatory transmission coefficient is found and resonant state energies are obtained. In a special case, the same bound energy spectrum for spinless particles is obtained, confirming the predictions of literature. We showed that existence of bound-state solutions are conditioned by the intensity of the pseudoscalar potential, which posses a critical value.

The dynamics of relativistic (scalar and vector) bosons through nonminimal vector square (well and barrier) potentials is studied in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) formalism. We show that the problem can be mapped in effective Schrodinger equations for a component of the DKP spinor. An oscillatory transmission coefficient is found and there is total reflection. Additionally, the energy spectrum of bound states is obtained and reveals the Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect, for specific conditions the potential lodges bound states of particles and antiparticles.

A previous formal derivation of the effective chiral Lagrangian for low-lying pseudoscalar mesons from first-principles QCD without approximations [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. D61, (2000) 54011] is generalized to further include scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. In the large Nc limit and with an Abelian approximation, we show that the properties of the newly added mesons in our formalism are determined by the corresponding underlying fundamental homogeneous Bethe--Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation, which yields the equations of motion for the scalar, vector, and axial-vector meson fields at the level of an effective chiral Lagrangian. The masses appearing in the equations of motion of the meson fields are those determined by the corresponding Bethe--Salpeter equation.

One-dimensional PT-symmetric quantum-mechanical Hamiltonians having continuous spectra are studied. The Hamiltonians considered have the form $H=p^2+V(x)$, where $V(x)$ is odd in $x$, pure imaginary, and vanishes as $|x|toinfty$. Five PT-symmetric potentials are studied: the Scarf-II potential $V_1(x)=iA_1,{rm sech}(x)tanh(x)$, which decays exponentially for large $|x|$; the rational potentials $V_2(x)=iA_2,x/(1+x^4)$ and $V_3(x)=iA_3,x/(1+|x|^3)$, which decay algebraically for large $|x|$; the step-function potential $V_4(x)=iA_4,{rm sgn}(x)theta(2.5-|x|)$, which has compact support; the regulated Coulomb potential $V_5(x)=iA_5,x/(1+x^2)$, which decays slowly as $|x|toinfty$ and may be viewed as a long-range potential. The real parameters $A_n$ measure the strengths of these potentials. Numerical techniques for solving the time-independent Schrodinger eigenvalue problems associated with these potentials reveal that the spectra of the corresponding Hamiltonians exhibit universal properties. In general, the eigenvalues are partly real and partly complex. The real eigenvalues form the continuous part of the spectrum and the complex eigenvalues form the discrete part of the spectrum. The real eigenvalues range continuously in value from $0$ to $+infty$. The complex eigenvalues occur in discrete complex-conjugate pairs and for $V_n(x)$ ($1leq nleq4$) the number of these pairs is finite and increases as the value of the strength parameter $A_n$ increases. However, for $V_5(x)$ there is an {it infinite} sequence of discrete eigenvalues with a limit point at the origin. This sequence is complex, but it is similar to the Balmer series for the hydrogen atom because it has inverse-square convergence.
With a view toward application of the Pauli-Villars regularization method to the Casimir energy of boundaries, we calculate the expectation values of the components of the stress tensor of a confined massive field in 1+1 space-time dimensions. Previous papers by Hays and Fulling are bridged and generalized. The Green function for the time-independent Schrodinger equation is constructed from the Green function for the whole line by the method of images; equivalently, the one-dimensional system is solved exactly in terms of closed classical paths and periodic orbits. Terms in the energy density and in the eigenvalue density attributable to the two boundaries individually and those attributable to the confinement of the field to a finite interval are distinguished so that their physical origins are clear. Then the pressure is found similarly from the cylinder kernel, the Green function associated most directly with an exponential frequency cutoff of the Fourier mode expansion. Finally, we discuss how the theory could be rendered finite by the Pauli-Villars method.
The relativistic quantum motion of scalar bosons under the influence of a full vector (minimal $A^{mu}$ and nonminimal $X^{mu}$) and scalar ($V_{s}$) interactions embedded in the background of a cosmic string is explored in the context of the Klein-Gordon equation. Considering Coulomb interactions, the effects of this topological defect in equation of motion, phase shift and S-matrix are analyzed and discussed. Bound-state solutions are obtained from poles of the S-matrix and it is shown that bound-state solutions are possible only for a restrict range of coupling constants.
