The production of slow nucleons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off the deuteron is investigated in the region $x gsim 0.3$. It is shown that within the spectator mechanism the semi-inclusive cross section exhibits a scaling property even at moderate values of $Q^2$ ($sim$ few $(GeV/c)^2$) accessible at present facilities, like $CEBAF$. Such a scaling property can be used as a model-independent test of the dominance of the spectator mechanism itself and provides an interesting tool to investigate the neutron structure function. The possibility of extracting model-independent information on the neutron to proton structure function ratio from semi-inclusive experiments is illustrated. The application of the spectator scaling to semi-inclusive processes off complex nuclei is outlined.
We present a model for electron- and neutrino-scattering off nucleons and nuclei focussing on the quasielastic and resonance region. The lepton-nucleon reaction is described within a relativistic formalism that includes, besides quasielastic scattering, the excitation of 13 N* and Delta resonances and a non-resonant single-pion background. Recent electron-scattering data is used for the state-of-the-art parametrizations of the vector form factors; the axial couplings are determined via PCAC and, in the case of the Delta resonance, the axial form factor is refitted using neutrino-scattering data. Scattering off nuclei is treated within the GiBUU framework that takes into account various nuclear effects: the local density approximation for the nuclear ground state, mean-field potentials and in-medium spectral functions. Results for inclusive scattering off Oxygen are presented and, in the case of electron-induced reactions, compared to experimental data and other models.
The theoretical formalism of inclusive lepton-nucleus scattering in the two-nucleon emission channel is discussed in the context of a simplified approach, the modified convolution approximation. This allows one to write the 2p2h responses of the relativistic Fermi gas as a folding integral of two 1p1h responses with the energies and momenta transferred to each nucleon. The idea behind this method is to introduce different average momenta for the two initial nucleons in the matrix elements of the two-body current, with the innovation that they depend on the transferred energies and momenta. This method treats exactly the two-body phase space kinematics, and reduces the formulae of the response functions from seven-dimensional integrals over momenta to much simpler three-dimensional ones. The applicability of the method is checked by comparing with the full results within a model of electroweak meson-exchange currents. The predictions are accurate enough, especially in the low-energy threshold region where the average momentum approximation works the best.
Electron capture can determine the electron neutrino mass, while the beta decay of Tritium measures the electron antineutrino mass and the neutrinoless double beta decay observes the Majorana neutrino mass. Electron capture e. g. on 163Ho plus bound electron to 163Dy* plus neutrino can determine the electron neutrino mass from the upper end of the decay spectrum of the excited Dy*, which is given by the Q-Value minus the neutrino mass. The Dy* states decay by X-ray and Auger electron emissions. The total decay energy is measured in a bolometer. These excitations have been studied by Robertson and by Faessler et al.. In addition the daughter atom Dy can also be excited by moving in the capture process one electron into the continuum. The escape of these continuum electrons is automatically included in the experimental bolometer spectrum. Recently a method developed by Intemann and Pollock was used by DeRujula and Lusignoli for a rough estimate of this shake-off process for s wave electrons in capture on 163Ho. The purpose of the present work is to give a more reliable description of s wave shake-off in electron capture on Holmium. For that one needs very accurate atomic wave functions of Ho in its ground state and excited atomic wave functions of Dy* including a description of the continuum electrons. In the present approach the wave functions of Ho and Dy* are determined selfconsistently with the antisymmetrized relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Fock approach. The relativistic continuum electron wave functions for the ionized Dy* are obtained in the corresponding selfconsistent Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Potential. In this improved approach shake-off can hardly be seen after electron capture in 163Ho and thus can probably not affect the determination of the electron neutrino mass.
We describe a model for pion production off nucleons and coherent pions from nuclei induced by neutrinos in the 1 GeV energy regime. Besides the dominant Delta pole contribution, it takes into account the effect of background terms required by chiral symmetry. Moreover, the model uses a reduced nucleon-to-Delta resonance axial coupling, which leads to coherent pion production cross sections around a factor two smaller than most of the previous theoretical estimates. Nuclear effects like medium corrections on the Delta propagator and final pion distortion are included.
