Magnetic exchange driven proximity effect at a magnetic insulator / topological insulator (MI/TI) interface provides a rich playground for novel phenomena as well as a way to realize low energy dissipation quantum devices. Here we report a dramatic enhancement of proximity exchange coupling in the MI / magnetic-TI EuS / Sb$_{2-x}$V$_x$Te$_3$ hybrid heterostructure, where V doping is used to drive the TI (Sb$_{2}$Te$_3$) magnetic. We observe an artificial antiferromagnetic-like structure near the MI/TI interface, which may account for the enhanced proximity coupling. The interplay between the proximity effect and doping provides insights into controllable engineering of magnetic order using a hybrid heterostructure.

The magnetic proximity effect is a fundamental feature of heterostructures composed of layers of topological insulators and magnetic materials since it underlies many potential applications in devices with novel quantum functionality. Within density functional theory we study magnetic proximity effect at the 3D topological insulator/magnetic insulator (TI/MI) interface in Bi$_2$Se$_3$/MnSe(111) system as an example. We demonstrate that a gapped ordinary bound state which spectrum depends on the interface potential arises in the immediate region of the interface. The gapped topological Dirac state also arises in the system owing to relocation to deeper atomic layers of topological insulator. The gap in the Dirac cone is originated from an overlapping of the topological and ordinary interfacial states. This result being also corroborated by the analytic model, is a key aspect of the magnetic proximity effect mechanism in the TI/MI structures.
We report an experimental study of electron transport properties of MnSe/(Bi,Sb)2Te3 heterostructures, in which MnSe is an antiferromagnetic insulator, and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 is a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI). Strong magnetic proximity effect is manifested in the measurements of the Hall effect and longitudinal resistances. Our analysis shows that the gate voltage can substantially modify the anomalous Hall conductance, which exceeds 0.1 e2/h at temperature of 1.6 K and magnetic field of 5 T, even though only the top TI surface is in proximity to MnSe. This work suggests that heterostructures based on antiferromagnetic insulators provide a promising platform for investigating a wide range of topological spintronic phenomena.
The possible realization of dissipationless chiral edge current in a topological insulator / magnetic insulator heterostructure is based on the condition that the magnetic proximity exchange coupling at the interface is dominated by the Dirac surface states of the topological insulator. Here we report a polarized neutron reflectometry observation of Dirac electrons mediated magnetic proximity effect in a bulk-insulating topological insulator (Bi$_{0.2}$Sb$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ / magnetic insulator EuS heterostructure. We are able to maximize the proximity induced magnetism by applying an electrical back gate to tune the Fermi level of topological insulator to be close to the charge neutral point. A phenomenological model based on diamagnetic screening is developed to explain the suppressed proximity induced magnetism at high carrier density. Our work paves the way to utilize the magnetic proximity effect at the topological insulator/magnetic insulator hetero-interface for low-power spintronic applications.
An interface electron state at the junction between a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) film of Bi2Se3 and a ferrimagnetic insulator film of Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) was investigated by measurements of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The surface state of the Bi2Se3 film was directly observed and localized 3d spin states of the Fe3+ state in the YIG film were confirmed. The proximity effect is likely described in terms of the exchange interaction between the localized Fe 3d electrons in the YIG film and delocalized electrons of the surface and bulk states in the Bi2Se3 film. The Curie temperature (TC) may be increased by reducing the amount of the interface Fe2+ ions with opposite spin direction observable as a pre-edge in the XMCD spectra.

We consider a magnetic skyrmion crystal formed at the surface of a topological insulator. Incorporating the exchange interaction between the helical Dirac surface states and the periodic Neel or Bloch skyrmion texture, we obtain the resulting electronic band structures. We discuss the properties of the reconstructed skyrmion bands, namely the impact of symmetries on the energies and Berry curvature. We find substantive qualitative differences between the Neel and Bloch cases, with the latter generically permitting a low-energy tight-binding representation whose parameters are tightly constrained by symmetries. We explicitly construct the associated Wannier orbitals, which resemble the ring-like chiral bound states of helical Dirac fermions coupled to a single skyrmion in a ferromagnetic background. We construct a two-band tight-binding model with complex nearest-neighbor hoppings which captures the salient topological features of the low-energy bands. Our results are relevant to magnetic topological insulators (TIs), as well as to TI-magnetic thin film heterostructures, in which skyrmion crystals may be stabilized.
